Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted June 3, 2008 Moderators Posted June 3, 2008 Those are BEAUTIFUL photos, Jim! And you took these in May 2008?? How was the weather on the Big Island when you were there? My friend who lives there says they've been having a lot of VOG [volcanic ash mixed with fog] because the trade winds have turned and the volcano is active, so the ash is thick in the air which is being blown back onto the island. Makes breathing difficult for everybody. Maybe the vog has lifted by this time. I hope so. Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....
Moderators John317 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Moderators Posted June 3, 2008 Thanks very much. It was great fun taking them. I was there for ten days during the merry month of May. The weather was gorgeous. April and May are among the island's best. If you can't make it there during those months, though, there is nothing to worry about as the other ten months of the year are very decent as well. It rains in that part of the Big Island every single day of the year-- but usually only for a relatively brief time. While I was there, it normally rained only a few minutes, early in the morning, but naturally there can be showers at any time of the day. I have two children living there, which is the main reason I went. One lives in Hilo; the other lives only about a mile from the eastern edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It's true Kilauea is putting out a lot of VOG. Every day the radio has announcements about where it is safe to be outside, and most of the time it is safe everywhere except certain areas near the Volcano. I spent most of my time in the Puna area, which is just east of Kilauea, and I never experienced any problems with the VOG. I'll post a few more pictures of Kilauea and of the lava going into the ocean. You'll find some others near the beginning of this page. Moderators John317 Posted June 3, 2008 Author Moderators Posted June 3, 2008 May 13, 2008. Southwestern side of the Big Island. Daughter lives in extreme upper right, not far from the extinct town of Kalapana. These plumes of smoke can easily be seen from her house. Ocean liners regularly stop in the night to let their passengers watch the fireworks. Moderators Jeannieb43 Posted June 3, 2008 Moderators Posted June 3, 2008 Amazing shots, Jim! I'd been planning to ask where you were standing when you shot those pictures -- but now I see, you were in a helicopter! I've driven with my friend down to the ocean where the dried lava has formed a black crust over the entire side of the island. It even covers the roads (with a "35 MPH" road sign sticking up out of the dried black lava!). Quote Jeannie

...Change is inevitable; growth is optional....

It even covers the roads (with a "35 MPH" road sign sticking up out of the dried black lava!). Very glad you enjoy them. I realized that sometimes pictures may give false impressions, so that is one reason I chose to post some pictures showing they were taken from a helicopter. Of course there is no way to get those views by standing anywhere on land, but many people may not realize this. The road you mention, if you mean the one that ends near what used to be Kalapana, is very close to where my daughter lives. There's a Catholic church on the ocean side of the road near where it dead-ends, and just there, if you make a hard right onto an unpaved, lava road, it will take you about a mile away through the jungle to my daughter's house. Like all people living there, they've become accustomed to sleeping peacefully with an active volcano practically at their doorstep.
