What did Christ and the disciples do on the Sabbath....

How did Christ and the Disciples spend the Sabbath, just lying around, I dont think so. What did Christ and the disciples do on the Sabbath....

The Sabbath was intended to be a time for spiritual and physical refreshment; a time to get to know God better and be physically renewed and spiritially blessed. Notice the sort of things that Jesus did on Sabbath. Here are ten recorded incidences in which Jesus did something on the Sabbath.

A. Eating

Picking grain with the disciples (Matthew 12)

Eating with one of the chief Pharisees (Luke 14:1)

B. Healing

Man with crippled hand (Mark 3:1)

Crippled man by the pool (John 5:2)

Blind man receives sight (John 9)

A woman relieved of an 18-year infirmity (Luke 13)

C. Teaching in the synagogue

Matthew 12:9

Mark 1:21

Mark 6:2 D. Resting

In the tomb (Matthew 27:58-60) Note: In no place do we find Jesus saying, "It's been a tough week. Let's sleep the day away!" It is a rest from work and toil, but not from sharing Gods truth and blessings. There is no indication from the actions of Christ that the day was designed for inactivity.

What are some things that Christs example gives us that would be good to do on Sabbath?

1. Visit a friend or someone that is sick and might not get out a lot.

2. See how to help someone in need.

3. Have a special family worship to start or close the Sabbath.

4. Have a Bible study with others or even give a Bible Study with someone that is looking for understanding.....

A few of the things I've found to be really worth while and fun to do on the Sabbath:

Join a church singing group for sharing gospel songs at the area hospitals or retirement centers on Friday nights or Sabbath afternoons.

Going to a university campus on Sabbath and talking to people about Christ and the Bible, passing out literature and inviting people to the church for a potluck and vespers.

Visitng people in retirement centers (many of whom very seldom have any visitors and so are grateful for conversation and attention). Many appreciate a short Bible study or a few verses and prayer.

Meeting people at the parks or beaches and handing out Christian literature if they are interested in spiritual things.

John 3:16-17

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

In most of the Seventh-day Adventist church there is a Friday night service, Sabbath morning and Sabbath afternoon service. That's in at least 80% of our churches.

Here is a good explanation of how Christ could look at the rules and traditions of the Jews they had built up and cut right through them to show the true purpose of the Sabbath...

"And it came about that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to Him, "See here, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"... And He was saying to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. "Consequently, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." (Mark 2:23-24, 27-28)

In this narrative we read of only one of many occasions on which Jesus was accused of breaking the Sabbath. St. John's gospel, chapters 5, 7, and 9 record more instances where the Jews were violently angry with Our Lord for violating the written code of the Sabbath. Jesus' response to these accusations is authoritative: "The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." Jesus could alter the regulations of the written code when He chose to honor the spirit of the Law, and not just the letter. If He could fulfill the Sabbath Law by breaking the commandment against doing work on the Sabbath, then certainly St. Paul is on the right path to say that the very observance of the seventh-day Sabbath is subject to greater fulfillment in Christ. And how is the Sabbath fulfilled in Christ? By worshiping Him on the day on which He won our salvation: "He... was raised for our justification." (Rom. 4:25)

While Jesus was certainly accused of breaking the Sabbath by His enemies, He never did any such thing. Jesus was healing and doing good in the name of the Father, and the spiritually blind Pharisee's accused Him of breaking the Sabbath laws. But Jesus was not breaking His Father's laws, he was breaking the traditions and rules of the Pharisees, rules and traditions which God had never imposed, which made the Sabbath a burden rather than a joy. Anyone who suggests that Jesus went about breaking the Sabbath of God, for any reason at all, does not know God, and places himself in the company of the spiritually blind Pharisees....."

Number 15:32 While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, 34 and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. 35 Then the LORD said to Moses, “The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.” 36 So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Hmmm?

The Lord taught the people of Israel the importance of obedience, particularly in regard to the keeping of the Sabbath. If people don't learn this lesson, they will die eternally. Parents must also teach their children the importance of obeying them and their instructions. At that point in their history, the children of Israel were spiritually immature. They had just come out of generations of slavery and ignorance about God, and were taking their first steps, as it were.

The Lord who said this to Moses was the same Lord in the New Testament who kept the Sabbath and taught more about the Sabbath than ablout any other single subject.

The Lord takes us where we are, as immature as we are, and does what He must do in order to lead us step by step to a higher spiritual experience and maturity. This is exactly what He was doing with the sons of Israel in the wilderness. He is doing the same with His people today.

Those are good things to do, too, I think. I left Christ and the church for quite a few years, but it was my good memories of going to church on Friday and Sabbath evenings and to Wednesday night prayer meetings with my family, which eventually led me to come back to Christ and be rebaptized.

I asked my Sabbath School class, how they could reconcile the God of the Old Testament who sent the angel of death to Egypt and to Pharoahs household, to the Christ of the New Testament who show such love to everyone....the silence was deafening..

It is a hard thing to understand...

The insinuation is that God actually made the Sabbath a burden rather than a joy.

I won't leave that hanging, but I don't want to get off topic here, either. So..

Agreed, change and Sabbath appear to be part and parcel one to the other.

Well, we know the man was stoned – but do we know whether he was stoned for picking up sticks or for leaving his tent upon the Sabbath.

Ex 16:29 ... abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

Ex 16:29 ... abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

A mute point, really, because the fact is that he was stoned for deliberately and willfully rebelling against the commands of God. It wasn't a question of his being ignorant or anything like that but of his choosing to do what he knew was wrong when it would have been easy for him to obey.

Why did God do it? For the same reason that a parent must sometimes punish a child, to show that there are severe consequences to disobedience. It was for the benefit of all Israel to see the importance of listening to and obeying the commands of God.

The children of Israel at that time were immature spiritually, like children. You have to teach small children differently than you do an adult. God takes us where we are and leads us up step by step to a higher ring on the ladder of truth.

Notice that Exodus 16: 29 was not a perpetual command of God but was temporary and only intended for the children of Israel during that time in their journey in the desert.

John 3:16-17

No doubt, Christ, being a circumcised Jew and being "Under the Law" of Moses, was a good and faithful Jew. He keep the Sabbath as required by the Jews or "Children of Israel" and fulfilled the law given to the Jews to keep. (Exodus 31:12-18)

An error is made in judgment and discernment when some promote the fact that Christ lived as a Jew, and therefore automatically assume that Christians must live as a Jew as well. This is commonly and correctly called "Judaizing" and condemned by the Apostles in Acts 15:1-5ff and in the Galatians. So, while the speculation of what Christ did on the Sabbath day is an exercise in speculation, it's not of major import to Christianity, that is not bound by Sabbaths commanded to "the Children of Israel" not Chinese, Japanese, Russians, English and Indians..etc.

In all due respect, Humble, is this the best answer you can give?

For one thing, I think the Bible says Jesus is to be our model-- we are to walk as Jesus walked. He kept His Father's commandments and calls us to keep them too.

Or are you saying that Jesus does not want you and I to keep His Father's commandments?

I think that I would rather be in the company of all the prophets, apostles, disciples, and Jesus Himself rather than with those who claim the Sabbath has been changed or done away with, without any valid Bible support at all.

Jesus said that the Sabbath was made for the benefit of mankind. He did not say the Sabbath was made for the Jew. In other words, the Sabbath was made to be a blessing for all people. Why would God make the Sabbath by blessing it, setting it apart from the rest of the days of the week, rest on it and then give that blessing only to a small percentage of the human race, about 3,000 years after making it?

Actually, I was alluding to the significance of

Ex 16:29 ... abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.

to point out the fact that the Sabbath milieu changed - and does.

Per the Sabbath Commandment vis-à-vis that 'kept' today - on the 10th day of Abib ye shall purchase a lamb (or goat) to take into your house - and on the 14th day ye shall take it to the priest [...] [/parphrased]

It is indisputable that both the Gregorian and the Hillel II calendars incorporate a 'floating' Seventh-day Sabbath. What were the law-abiding Children of the Law and the Covenant to do - should and when the Seventh-day Sabbath fall/fell upon the 10th of Abib? Were they still to

travel to market, make their selection of either lamb or goat, pay the merchant, carry the animal home and install it with the family? Every aspect of the transaction represented - a breaking of the Law and the Covenant.

There is no provision in Holy Writ that addresses the question - that I am aware.

Ipso facto, the OT calendar is lost.

OK. Could you give the Bible verses, as many as you like, that show what you are saying about the Sabbath?

I'll study them.

In all due respect, Humble, is this the best answer you can give?

For one thing, I think the Bible says Jesus is to be our model-- we are to walk as Jesus walked. He kept His Father's commandments and calls us to keep them too.

Answer: By your reasoning, that would be we would all have to live in Judea, tithe to the Levites, be circumcised of the flesh on the 8th day, not touch dogs, cats, or unclean animals, keep the feasts of tabernacles and 2nd tithe, and do 100's of things that Christ did, you aren't doing and won't do. So, let's be honest, you don't really mean to follow Christ in all of his Jewishness. You sort of pick and choose in a cafeteria style.

Or are you saying that Jesus does not want you and I to keep His Father's commandments?

Answer: Of course Jesus wants his followers to keep his Father's commandments. The burden of proof is upon you to show me where Jesus or any of the prophets commanded the Gentile nations to keep the Jewish Sabbaths? There are commandments for the "children of Israel" and commandments for the Gentile nations. However, you won't find a single commandment from Genesis to Revelation commanding Gentile nations to keep the Sabbaths which are a sign between God and the "Children of Israel" , not the Chinese, Japanese, Indians..etc.

I think that I would rather be in the company of all the prophets, apostles, disciples, and Jesus Himself rather than with those who claim the Sabbath has been changed or done away with, without any valid Bible support at all.

Answer: Great, show me one (1) verse in all the bible, choose from Genesis to Revelation that Christ, the prophets, the Apostles, ..etc where there is either:

1. A commandment for Any other nation of peoples are commanded to keep the Sabbath.

2. A SINGLE condemnation of any other nation besides the Jews, that are condemned for NOT keep the Sabbath.

What the truth is, is that you are on the wrong side of all the prophets, Christ and the Apostles. Because, none of them taught that Sabbaths were to be kept by the Gentile nations. Not only so, but the Apostles expressly forbid the teaching that Gentiles must live as do the Jews, Under the Law of Moses.

In Mark 2:13-28, Christ is speaking to the Jews! about breaking the Sabbath (they were the ones commanded to keep it. The context clearly shows that Christ did not have the CHINESE AND JAPANESE AND INDIANS IN MIND. COME ON! [color:#FF0000]

Read the Scripture. The Sabbath was made as a "sign" between God and the Jews (the children of Israel, the physical descendants of the Jacob, not Gentiles. Exodus 31:12-19 It is the sign of the old covenant with "the children of Israel". That's what scripture says.

Posted

I might add that Mark 2:13-28 shows Christ DEFENDING the Jewish disciples for picking grain and eating it on the Sabbath Day (when they should have prepared the food the day ahead) and breaking the Sabbath. That is totally in the opposite what you tried to make it say. Christ, far from even remotely implying Sabbaths were binding upon the Gentile nations, Christ was defending even the Jews breaking the Sabbath for as little thing as hunger. Do you not see how terribly wrong it is then to remotely imply that the context of Mark 2:13-28 Christ was trying to make the Sabbath binding on Gentiles, while defending the Jewish disciples for breaking the Sabbath.

Rob

So it looks like he's saying that God imposed unnecessary things that made the Sabbath a grievous burden, because God commanded to stone the guy that picked up sticks.

That's not vindicating God. That's the opposite. That's antagonism against God.

Please remember the old covenant was obey and live, disobey and die. If you obey you get heaven, but if you sin you must die. And the Jews said - you give us your law and we'll keep it and in turn you owe us heaven.

Why did God enter into the old covenant with the Jews when He fully knew they couldn't keep that agreement?

Lamb or goat.

What event occurred in the economy of the COI on the 14th of Abib?
