cardw Posted February 22, 2009 Posted February 22, 2009 Quote: Part of the problem today is we are using an education system designed for the industrial revolution. I would change this statement a bit like this. "Part of the problem today is we are letting the school system raise our kids instead of doing it ourselves." I think it unrealistic to expect any one aspect of a community to raise a child. Raising children requires a community and co-operation within that community. No parent can keep track of their child 24 hours a day. A child needs to learn how to thrive in many different contexts and school is only one of those contexts. Even though I am not a believer, I do believe in the teachers that provided my sons an education within the SDA school system. No, they are not perfect, but it provided a context within which we could experience community. Since the school my sons attended supported freedom of religion and belief, there were great opportunities for my sons to experience dialog and interaction with many different belief systems. They were also allowed to freely express their lack of belief and were often favorites of their Bible teachers because they were well informed on the issues, since we dialoged at home around the dinner table. Both my sons are thriving at San Francisco state and the teachers at the SDA school my sons attended, for the most part, were a big part of that success. I wanted my sons to understand believers from the inside since a majority of people in this country are believers in God. My wife and I felt that the freedom of speech within the SDA school system was a great place to allow this to happen. My sons could also observe the weaknesses of fundamentalism first hand and could see that even intelligent and good people can hold some rather illogical beliefs. This doesn't mean this couldn't happen in public school, but since I went through SDA schools, this was something I was familiar with and felt I could guide my sons through. Plus religious discussion in general tends to be discouraged with the public system or is so politically correct that it doesn't really educate. We were under no illusions that the SDA school would not expose them to drugs, alcohol, or other dangers of the teenage maturation process, but with the smaller classes and teachers that cared, we saw a great support system in place. My point is that raising children is a complex process and these "sound bytes" that we all cheer are really not that informative or helpful. They tend to sound self righteous and condemning. Both of which are not helpful. Quote Rich http://tiny.cc/CM2j8

Amelia Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Actually this thread shouldn't be about teachers at all. Teachers have a tough job. But when students are disrespectful to this point, what should be done? Was calling the police warrented at all? What are we not hearing in this case? guibox Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 In my experience, about 1/4 of SDA teachers are good. The rest are mediocre to lame, with a few evil ones thrown in. I've done lots of subbing, so I've seen it firsthand. I don't know how public school teachers compare. But I know several young adults who experienced both and felt that public school was by far a better experience and the teachers cared more about them. Well, I can't argue what you've experienced but I will have to disagree with you on this. I believe that the issue is more the system as opposed to the teachers specifically. The most SDA church schools lack programs, funding, resources, space and facilities that public schools have to offer. In this they are 'better'. The SDA system has a tendency to chew one up and spit them out. However, to say that 'the teachers in public school care more about them' is an erroneous, sweeping generalisation. But again, one's experience usually determines their entire mindset.I've been an SDA teacher for 15 years and I don't know if I could even count on a few fingers the amount of teachers I've worked with and encountered that aren't good teachers or don't care for their students. If you want to work the law of averages and ratios, I would say that quantity wise, you'd probably find more teachers in public school who don't care than in SDA schools as the number of teachers is greater. Quote www.corbel.theacaistory.com
carolaa Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I was not speaking about my entire mindset. I was referring to probably the last 10 years or so of my experience. Prior to that, I attended SDA schools most of my life (an overall good experience) and have several good friends who are SDA teachers and administrators. I can't say enough about the good SDA teachers out there. What I have seen in the last 10 years, however, has been hugely disappointing. I have seen a excellent, even award-winning, SDA teachers leave to go into the public system and thrive there. I have seen teachers who are crass, insensitive, and downright mean - and they all cared deeply about their students! I can better tolerate an incompetent teacher - I can make up for missed scholastics at home - but I will not tolerate a mean teacher in a Christian school. You made some good points about the advantages public schools have that SDA schools don't. I would go further and say that the problem with SDA schools is that they are being run by amateurs in their spare time. A good teaching staff can help a lot, but it can only go so far in making up for a school that is administered by amateurs in their spare time. Quote

But when students are disrespectful to this point, what should be done? Was calling the police warrented at all? What are we not hearing in this case? OK, I hear ya. I agree, teachers have a tough job, and I wouldn't want to be a teacher today. Schools should have a rule that you can't have cell phones on during class time, and if that rule is blatantly violated, there should be discussions with the parents. I'm not sure the police need to be involved - it shouldn't have escalated to that point, and it was probably the school administration's fault that it did. Surely she could have been suspended or had detention or some other consequence. If she is a threat to herself or others, then call for assistance; otherwise, handle it in a professional manner. Cosmin M. Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 That is the problem today. Over generations kids have been thought lessons less and less by spankings, beatings, etc which has cause kids nowadays to be corrupt with drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, etc. I know I might be only a 15 year old. But trust me, in Romania you got beat pretty darn well. And look at me now? Have I ever gotten in trouble in my life at school? Well yes, of course, a few times but none of them were major. The point I am trying to make is that the less we teach kids by spanking/beating the more they will disobey. (My dad remembers those good old days when he god pulled by the side burn. xD) This is how it should be.... This is how it is.... Quote
Administrators Gail Posted February 23, 2009 Administrators Posted February 23, 2009 The kids will ALL argue that they need the phone. But there is such a thing as voicemail. In case of emergency, no one objects to a caregiver calling the office like they did in the days before cells. There are ways to reach students without having them texting when instructional time is going on. In an emergency, too, a student can ask to be excused to attend to it. I'm suspecting that that is totally different than what transpired in this case. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Woody Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Kids now days just don't know what it was like in the 'old' days. I used to have to wind or crank up the phone in hopes that the lady at the post office would hear it and connect me to who I wanted to talk to. This is true. And I also had to put coins in the meter to have electricity. When the coins ran out ... so did the electricity. Not fun. Okay ... enough from the olden days. Hey ... I just turned 50. I am sure the older folks here have much better stories. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.

Liz Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Gail, I really don't mean to disagree, but there are "some" students who really do need a cell phone. There are "those" that really can't wait for the relay message--usually we get it put in their 504 plans; however, it is usually a fight to do so, mainly because of what this girl did, is why most teachers and admin view phones as unnecessary instead of the lifelines that they are to "some". Liz Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Hey Uncle Red, I remember when we didn't have cable---we didn't get it until I was in HighSchool. Outta Here Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 What sort of disruption was this to the class? It seems to me that texting is a quiet activity-one which disturbs no one but the one sending and receiving texts. The disruption of class occured when the teacher made a fuss about it; when the security officers were called in; when the arrest was made, and so on and so forth. I am certain that the remainder of the day was spent with all the students chatting about and even texting one another about the girl who got arrested. A clever teacher may have found a much more effective method of handling this power struggle. Quote
