GreatLakesGramma Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Exo 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery Lev 20:10 'The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
SivartM Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Adultry was common place in the OT and God just winked at it. Not saying that was good of Him to do ... just that He did it. He didn't wink at it, He gave a specific commandment against it and punished adulterers. With death. And everything God does is good. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 I don't have time to look up everything right now, but I'm sure if you think about it, you will remember reading, probably in Leviticus, that if a man lay with a virgin who was betrothed to another man, they were to be put to death. She was already considered the wife of her betrothed. What you are thinking of is polygamy. It's not quite the same. If a married man had sex with an unmarried girl or woman, he was required to keep her as a wife. The society of that day did not consider this to be adultery. It wasn't God's plan, and he only tolerated it. But when a first wife rocked the boat (Sarah) what did God say? Send Hagar away. Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis
GreatLakesGramma Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Guys, if I sound like I am haranguing you, I don't mean to. But with all I've learned about pornography through the years, if I get involved in any kind of discussion of it, I can get pretty steamed. Especially if anyone in any way defends any aspect of it. Not that any of you are. But when I think about this subject I feel like doing violence to certain people. Like those despicable morons who defend it as free speech! I'd like to give THEM a dose of FREE SPEECH! Quote Catherine God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:26. "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." -- C. S. Lewis

God viewed these sinners as perfect in His eyes. He certainly did not offer the death penalty to those that committed adultry. On the contrary ... He praised them. God didn't praise David while he was committing adultery. David spent days repenting in sackcloth and ashes. Several of his sons died because of his sin. And there was definitely a death penalty for adultery, check Leviticus. David being a man after God's own heart was the result of his trust in God, in spite of the mistakes he made. Many other people committed adultery and did not do so well because they did not repent for their sins. It's not like they were in a totally barbaric society with no concept of right or wrong. Woody Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 If there was a death penalty for adultery ... why didn't David suffer the penalty? Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Liz Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Well, let's see, just thinking here.....wages of sin is death, adultery is sin, King David is dead....or on the short term he wasn't allowed to build the Sanctuary...we all have to ask forgiveness for our sins and believe in Christ in order to be saved.....and David did, he fasted and prayed until the baby died... We can't expect the consequences of sin to happen immediately, can we? Where would repentance be in that situation? If the first time we sinned --boom we died? Quote For what will a man be profited, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his soul? Mat. 16:26Please, support the JDRF and help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Please, support the March of Dimes.
SivartM Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 If there was a death penalty for adultery ... why didn't David suffer the penalty? Perhaps because he repented. Just because David did not suffer the death penalty does not mean that the part of the Bible containing the death penalty for adultery was not true. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Woody Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Sounds good. But let me ask you ... Does one who has multiple wives ... live IN sin? And if this person is living in sin .... are his sins forgiven? Is he daily asking God for forgiveness each day when he lives with his additional wives? What about the Bible examples of multiple wives. Were they living in sin? Moderators Bravus Posted March 6, 2009 Moderators Posted March 6, 2009 Don't want to poke my head in the hornet's nest here, but while it's true that *in general* men are more visually stimulated than women, it's an over-statement to say that women are never visually stimulated and therefore never enjoy porn for its own sake and their own sake. Like everything, there are broad general patterns but a massive range of different individual responses. Quote Truth is important

GreatLakesGramma Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 it's an over-statement to say that women are never visually stimulated and therefore never enjoy porn for its own sake and their own sake. Like everything, there are broad general patterns but a massive range of different individual responses. Bravus, visual images don't stimulate women in the same way as they do men. When a woman is visually stimulated, it's because she's come to associate the visual image with the emotional feelings that bring the real stimulation. And she has also been desensitized to the natural reaction toward porn, and then conditioned to find it pleasant, either by her own choices or by someone else's manipulation of her feelings. carolaa Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 GLG, I think in general you are right. But I also think it's quite possible for a woman to get aroused by porn and to enjoy sex (with or without porn) for it's own sake, without emotional attachment. Quote
carolaa Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I have to add that I'm not saying that kind of sex is as fulfilling, just that it's possible. Quote
Key Guy Posted March 7, 2009 Author Posted March 7, 2009 Quote: If there was a death penalty for adultery ... why didn't David suffer the penalty? That's because kings (like presidents) get away with breaking laws they are supposed to uphold and protect. Who's gonna punish the king besides God? God chose in His wisdom to deal with David another way. David paid dearly for his sins, not just in the deaths of a bunch of his kids, but in the weakness of resolve he had in his later years. Mrs White records that he brought additional pain and sorrow on himself and the nation because he had trouble forgiving himself and wasn't as tough a father as he should have been. Quote
