Moderators Gerr Posted March 13, 2009 Moderators Posted March 13, 2009 Anyway, there's no command under the NT/NC to keep the Sabbath or else.... Instead of "or else", He appeals to your sense of love & gratitude: "If you love me, keep my commandments." Quote

NIV: The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself." TNLT: For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: "Love your neighbor as yourself. BobRyan Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 True of the last six commandements but as Christ points out - Love God is an even GREATER commandment. To "sum" is not to "divide and deconstruct" or to "cut, reduce and downsize". That is not the function of "sum". in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.
BobRyan Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Anyway, there's no command under the NT/NC to keep the Sabbath or else.... correction - the THIRD commandment is the ONLY one of the Ten not quoted at ALL in the NT. And of course there is the obvious -- no such Bible teaching as "whatever is not constantly repeated gets deleted". So that is really great for that THIRD commandment about not taking God's name in vain!! WheW! What a relief! in Christ, Bob Quote John 8:32 - The Truth will make you free“The righteousness of Christ will not cover one cherished sin." COL 316.

Robert Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 To "sum" is not to "divide and deconstruct" or to "cut, reduce and downsize". From what commandments of the moral law does the following originate (as in 1 thru 10): "Love...is not self-seeking" 1 Cor 13:5 "And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, [how?] do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great.... luke 6:34,35 Quote
LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 Faith is the NT method for showing love towards God. "What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."James 2:14,20,26 NKJV, KJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 But nothing about the 4th.... I'm supposing that would also mean the elimination of the first commandment. "You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus 20:3 Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 We aren't under law....The last six are a standard for Christian living. Faith takes the place of the first, four under the NC. "They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry."Zechariah 7:12 NIV "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."Matthew 22:37-40 KJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!

"For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God."Romans 2:28-29 KJV Regards! LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I would like to quote a retired SDA Pastor: no longer did His Sabbath have any significance. [The Dynamics of the Everlasting Gospel, By E.H. “Jack” Sequeira] I'm not acquainted with Jack but I'd suggest the thought attributed to his expression of believe could easily be spoken about those whose sins have separated them from God, as the Holy Word does say is true and could be, in context, referring to the rebellious and wicked who have turned against the Word. Just a logical possibility. Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 I would like to quote a retired SDA Pastor: It is the entrance of sin that destroyed the significance of the Sabbath rest, since sin is rebellion against God, in exchange for self-dependence [Romans 1:21; Philippians 2:21]. Thus, when sin separated us from God [isaiah 59:2], no longer did His Sabbath have any significance. [The Dynamics of the Everlasting Gospel, By E.H. “Jack” Sequeira] "But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear."Isaiah 59:2 KJV Regards! No, James is dealing with the last 6 as a standard of Christian living. Quote

Robert Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 You're confused....The Sabbath is a sign like circumcision was a sign. If you insist on the Sabbath without understanding the the meaning of the sign you end up like the Judaizers who were pushing circumcision. The 7th day Sabbath, as a sign, is dynamic. It always points to a finished work. God works and then rest in His perfect work. He never rest until His work is finished and complete. How is the Sabbath dynamic? Because while it always points to a finished work what it points to is changing. For example, at creation God worked six days. At the end of the 6 days God saw everything He had created and it was perfect...it was complete...it was sinless. Therefore God rested on the 7th day from His perfect work. Adam and Eve rested because they acknowledged that God's work was perfect. No sin marred His creation. So outwardly their Sabbath rest was a reminder that God, the provider and creator, was the author of perfection. Then sin came in and ruined God's creation. No longer did the Sabbath symbolize a sinless and perfect creation. Hence God had to begin working again. Why? Because His creation was no longer sinless, perfect and complete. So the Sabbath as it points to creation no longer is meaningful. We see this change when the first tablets were broken and then in place of the 4th commandment God changed it from a symbol of His perfect creation to a perfect redemption from Egyptian bondage. [/quote'] And the works - Sabbath keeping? No, here's the context: No, James is dealing with the last 6 as a standard of Christian living. The underlined, Robert, is a principle that applies in all contexts. Principles always prevail no matter the context, no matter what circumstances prevail save one caveat, found in these promises based on supernatural intervention and supernatural grace that take precedence in a sinful world. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 KJV "Above all, keep fervent in your love for one another, because love covers a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8 NASB I believe you to be honest in your beliefs, Robert, however as long as half of God's counsels are considered to be of no value in present day guidance for victorious living, Truth cannot be found nor appreciated. "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13 NKJV Regards! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
LifeHiscost Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 "He who has the son has life". "No one comes to the father except by Me." Clearly anything else besides faith in Christ is idolatry. There's only one way to heaven and that's through the righteousness of Christ. There is no doubt of the Truth of what you have repeated above, Robert. And to add to that I would suggest this also as our reality and hope. "All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law" Romans 2:12 NIV "But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets..." Romans 3:21 NKJV "For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law."Romans 3:28 NASB May I suggest my salvation and yours is not predicated on our keeping the Law. However as the Scripture says above, the keeping of the Law is a testimony or witness to the righteousness of God. And may I add, if you don't think God rewards the keeping of the Law, as described in the ten Commandments, just live a lifestyle based on ignoring any you choose and see how discouraging the events that are subsequent consequences. It is these discouraging consequences that God, in His mercy, has made effort to enable us to avoid. While we may avoid the consequence, irregardless our ignorance for awhile, in the end our natural emotion as a result of the consequences may drive us to despair and perhaps cause us to lose trust in God's grace and subsequently lose our eternal life for lack of belief in God's mercy. As a result we will have lost our own soul because we chose to ignore God's safeguards. "I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." John 15:5 NASB "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13 NKJV Blessings! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Robert Posted March 14, 2009 Posted March 14, 2009 All this is fine, but it doesn't prove the Sabbath under the NC. It, the sign, will be an issue in the future like circumcision wasn't an issue in the early days of Abraham, but later became one. Quote
