LifeHiscost Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Here is the question. How do we overcome sin in our lives? Mark "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."Revelation 12:11 KJV That's where the rubber meets the road also IMHO. And it seems to me, for that to be a reality come true for keeps, it is necessary for me to give continuous recognition of the Source. "...for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." Philippians 2:13 NKJV "...to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."Colossians 1:26,27 NKJV Blessings! Quote Lift Jesus up!!
Lutz13 Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 Quote: Here is the question. How do we overcome sin in our lives? Mark Ultimately through love. When I asked God why is it that I am unable to give up a most coveted sin. His response was that my love for that sin is greater than my love for Him. So the next question would be, how do I love Him more? "We love Him because He first loved us."(1 John 4:19)"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."(John 3:16) In any relationship, the more time spent with someone, the more you love them. The same rings true with our relationship with Christ. As Jesus is the living vine. "I am the vine, you are the branches"(John 15:5) We are the branches that come off of the vine. The branches that bear no fruit are cut off. We must constantly draw from Jesus so that we can produce good fruit. "Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me."(John 15:4) While abiding in Christ, our lives start to change. The things we used to love and hold onto seem to become less desirable. Our branches begin to produce good fruit. "Love, Joy, peace longsuffereing, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control."(Galatians 5:22-23) "The words I speak to you are spirit, and they are life"(John 6:63) By receiving the words, we receive the life of the vine. My walk with God started out as a miserable experience and I gave up for a long time. I was told that I must follow all the commandments and be perfect. This I tried and failed miserably. It wasn't until I learned that no matter how hard I tried, I would never overcome by my own efforts. That I need to stop looking at myself and look to Christ "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up"(John 3:14) Just as the children were bitten by the snakes and were cured by looking at the bronze serpent. We too are to look to Christ and be cured. There is also much more to this subject. This should become a good discussion. Quote
Moderators Gerr Posted May 26, 2009 Moderators Posted May 26, 2009 Allow me to add just a couple of verses: 1. Jn 15:4,5 "Abide in me and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.....for apart from me you can do nothing." 2. 1 Jn 3:6,7 "No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or know him. Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as He is righteous. Whoever makes a practidce of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reasson the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." Quote
Haldog Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 The question assumes a fact which is not in evidence. We don't have to overcome sin, Jesus did that for us on the cross. It isn't about how much we love him or love sin, it's about how much He loved us and what He did for us. Once we start understanding the atonement and His love the rest will fall into place. Shalom Quote "You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim

Administrators Gail Posted May 26, 2009 Administrators Posted May 26, 2009 I have another question: How has the Lord worked for you in your life? Do you do the same things that you used to do, or have they changed? Has your attitude changed? What Christ has done for you he will continue to do- Phil.1:6 He will continue to do it for you right up until the day of Jesus Christ. That is a promise for us! Should we worry about whether we are sinless? Well, the fact that it bothers you is evidence that the Spirit is working. Grasp hold of this Bible promise and leave the rest to the Saviour. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

LifeHiscost Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 This is interesting... "by the blood of the Lamb" What do you think that means? Mark "...without shedding of blood is no remission."Hebrews 9:22 KJV "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."1 John 1:9 KJV The cleansing is a result of the blood of Christ being applied, after the confession and forgiveness. Robert Posted May 27, 2009 Posted May 27, 2009 This is interesting... "by the blood of the Lamb" What do you think that means? Mark Well, it's a metaphor for Christ's life laid down in death. Because Christ's death was our death we have been justified unto life. So "in Christ" we have the assurance of salvation. No assurance, no fruit....The only fruit that comes from an insecure relationship with Christ are works polluted with self-centered motivation, which in reality are self-righteous fruit. Quote

Moderators Gerr Posted May 27, 2009 Moderators Posted May 27, 2009 The question assumes a fact which is not in evidence. Assumes what fact? When the Apostles John says, "NO ONE who ABIDES in HIM keeps on sinning," is that fact or fiction? Quote: We don't have to overcome sin, I beg your pardon? Would you say that again? Where is your EVIDENCE for such a statement? Our Lord said: "TRULY TRULY, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does NOT remain in the house forever, the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." Jn 8:34-36. Quote: Jesus did that for us on the cross. "What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who DIED to sin still live in it?" Rom 6:1,2 ESV. Or as the KJV says, "God forbid!" Quote: It isn't about how much we love him or love sin, it's about how much He loved us and what He did for us. Once we start understanding the atonement and His love the rest will fall into place. Shalom So is your understanding of the atonement then is that it gives us the license to continue a life of sin? Does God love Lucifer any less? If you can continue to live in sin and remain saved because of the Cross, why can't Satan and his followers? Quote

How do we abide in Him and Him in us Gerry? What does that mean? Are you married? How do you abide with your wife? The Bible often uses the relationship between a husband and wife to illustrate His relationship with His people. There will be beautiful alluring women, but a faithful husband will cling to his covenant wife. "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. IT TEACHES US TO SAY "NO" to ungodliness and worldly passions and live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age..." Titus 2:11,12 NIV. The Bible also uses other metaphors, e.g. to have life, one must eat. "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.......It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The WORDS that I have spoken to you are spirit and life." Jn 8:53,54, 63 ESV. "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you." Ps 119:11 ESV. Quote
