Key Guy Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 Party on and enjoy life! I have a feeling heaven is going to be a lot of fun that many may not approve of now if they knew about it!!! No one enjoys a fun time more than I. Over the years the definition of a fun time has changed somewhat. My friends (and enemies) will tell you that I'm still rather immature. I can live with that. However, I need advice. I'm no doubt going to dance for joy when we cross over to eternity! What dance steps shall I be learning so I may properly express my overwhelming joy in Heaven? You see, it's one thing to leap and hop for joy. The lame guy that Christ healed certainly was thrilled and showed it. It's quite another to be dancing some popular dance on the dance floor. I don't buy the dance floor scenario as the place to demonstrate extreme joy and gratitude for God's blessings. Isn't that what it's supposed to be all about? Quote

Key Guy Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 I thought the video was quite cool, an expression of joy and happiness. Really? I saw guys and gals in shades shaking and slinking to provocative (dare I say satanic?) music.. in a Christian (dedicated to Jesus and what He stands for) sanctuary. Just what would you consider an UNACCEPTABLE expression in a sanctuary? Quote
Outta Here Posted July 26, 2009 Author Posted July 26, 2009 Shane, you're right. I was making a judgment call about others when I said "many Adventists are such 'broken dogs'..." For that, I do apologize. And yet, I have seen time and time again where the spirit of youth is squelched by the disciplinarians in the church. Some people are so conditioned that their joy and exuberance seems to be tucked neatly away, never to be shared again. I have a one year old nephew who loves to dance. It is in his nature and is an expression of joy when he dances. I pray that he never be disciplined so much as to think that expression of joy through dancing is unacceptable. Quote

Dr. Shane Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I have seen time and time again where the spirit of youth is squelched by the disciplinarians in the church. I have sat on a church board and wanted to choke other members that are doing exactly what you describe. I am very sympathetic. Yet I don't want to judge them. I disagree with them and think they are totally wrong. But I do believe they are sincere and doing what they believe is right. Quote Pastoral Family Counselor... Parade Orange Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Shane i think the palet the last few generations picks from is different than a few what we chioose or know that others choose. I dont know if the ones that planned and implemented this dance routine are religious or hangs out in the sanctary once a week. I havent a clue of who they are or what they belive and do. The only thing i inow about weddings is that it is done in churches and the City Hall if not at a park or two. they planned a church wedding and got it! then they think of what they wanna do to celibrate the occasion. this is their choice just like the location. It is was what these two americans chose to do. they are people who dont think like i do but they didnt consult me. So if only they had me as their event cordinator .....!!! Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted July 27, 2009 Administrators Posted July 27, 2009 So, everyone wants to avoid addressing the concept of decorum. It figures OK. I'll bite... First I must say that your characterization of the dance in question as being provocative and possibly Satanic seemed a bit extreme. I saw more joyful exuberance and not much sexuality in the dancing wedding party. It is all a matter of perception. What you saw was perhaps more of a reflection of you than of the wedding party. You know, like the whole idea of beauty being in the eye of the beholder... Ugly is too... But really it seems to me that you are more bothered by the fact that any dancing took place in a church. Is the church too holy for any dance? Or is it too close to where God supposedly sits? Apparently David didn't think dancing exuberantly and joyfully (His wife perceived it as you have this wedding dance as being shamefully provocative...) in his underwear before the ark (God's throne here on earth in OT times) was a problem. OK should there be no dancing of any kind in a church for special occasions other than church? How about dancing while worshiping and praising God, like David did? During Church Service on Sabbath morning? For the record, an Adventist Church which I attend fairly often does have a praise dance team that dances while the music praise team leads the singing. It is praise and poetry in motion. The dear lady that leads out was troubled when she first joined the church that she had no talent for music, couldn't sing or play an instrument. But she said, "I can dance." And now she is pleased to be a contributing part of praise and worship with her talent. How do you feel about that? Tom Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)

Parade Orange Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 yes davids wife saw ugly and GOD saw beauty when DAVID danced Quote All progress in the Spiritual Life is knowing and Loving GOD"there is non upon earth that I desire besides YOU" PS 73:25That perspective changes EVERYTHING-suffering and adversity are the means that makes us hungry for GOD. Neil D Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 To no one in poticular- All I can say is "wow!" ....Some of you can't tell when others are joyful...and some of you can't tell when some are dancing for fun.... Where is Satan in this type of dancing? What does Satan have to do with dancing anyways when you are incorporating dance in a wedding service...or even at the reception? I think that Jesus would have approved the dance scene that we saw...at Church, with those shades, and with these guys standing on thier hands, and doing summersaults from a group of people dancing...amazing stuff for a bunch of amateurs....especially if they are SDA amateur dancers.... These guys and gals are to be commended on thier creativity and thier dance and thier unique wedding,....I am sure they will not forget it, nor will thier relatives, for YEARS!!!!..... And congrates to the people getting married. Quote Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve. George Bernard Shaw
there buster Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 We have worship dance from time to time-- not nearly often enough, for my taste. The young woman who does it has classical training, and when she dances, heaven touches earth. It is transporting, amazing, and beautiful. Dance is one of the few things commanded for worship in scripture (see Ps. 149 and 150) Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell
Neil D Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 I went over this video again.... I am amazed at all the older folk who were smiling in church, and the female pastor who was also smiling, presided over this...She also thought this was a fun way to celebrate the wedding...It just seems to me, that with all this joy and all this celebration that was happening, ...it just amazes me that the traditionalists, and the conccervatives who can't stand for change or fear the marring traditional but sacred institutions...it just amazes me that the purpose of weddings, while joining men and women before God, do NOT negate celebration during the service.... Why would you want to dampen the ceremony with the accusations that dancing is bad and of the devil when as has been pointed out that Psalms encourages dancing for joy? And what is more joyful than the finding of a man and woman who want to share their lives together...... ....Ok, other than finding out that you have just won the $100mill Lotto..... Tom I wasn't asking anyone to 'bite' like they were going to get trapped. This wasn't a fishing exercise. I'll be honest. I'm not sure where I stand on 'holy' dancing in a sanctuary (no doubt due to my upbringing). I'm quite sure that 'worldly' dancing is uncouth and the wedding dancing down the aisle was worldly as opposed to holy. There's this thing called "primitive Godliness" aka "Pure Godliness" that Mrs White espouses. I see this type of dancing (in a church sanctuary) out of that realm. See, you are trying to compare David's dance to that of the wedding and they are not the same. So that premise won't hold water. There is a distinct difference between dancing out of immediate and profound joy than dancing a planned dance designed to bring honor to oneself. Hint: Wearing sunglasses and doing a choreographed number is NOT an immediate expression of joy in the moment. They were not dancing a 'holy dance'. I can't speak to David's wife's complaint, so I'm silent on that. I never opined that there shouldn't be ANY dancing of ANY kind. I am simply not sure where to draw the line between what God would inspire and what Satan would inspire. That doesn't mean there isn't a line, though, and I think that line was crossed in this particular wedding. There are some on this forum who have expressed that ANY dancing is acceptable to God or should be. I totally disagree. I can back that up, so it's not just my opinion. I think we can summarize this and most all subjects where we don't agree: Some want God to be like them, some want to be like God. Quote

Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted July 28, 2009 Administrators Posted July 28, 2009 ... and conversely the more scowls we get the more sinful it is... These are all human judgments. Find a direct condemnation of any dance in Scripture and then we can start to find out where to draw that nebulous line you believe is out there somewhere. I don't disagree that there is a line, but I think caution and fear born of our puritanical Adventist roots is not necessarily a very good guide. I don't disagree that there is a line, but I think caution and fear born of our puritanical Adventist roots is not necessarily a very good guide. Human judgments indeed... I agree, and that was my point. We don't judge righteousness by human votes or smiles/scowls. I did say 'caution', I didn't say 'fear', although weighing righteousness in the view of eternity can bring about fear. IOW, I'm not about to place God's promise of eternal life at risk. That means I'll be avoiding Satan and his deceptions like the plague that it truly is. In this day, it is even more critical to choose whether to drift toward sin or paddle toward righteousness. Don't be so anxious to toss away 'our puritanical Adventist roots'. They are there for a reason, even if nothing more than to keep the brakes on enough to slow down our tendencies to accept the latest fads. The beauty is that the closer I grow in God's love and character, the more careful I will be in accepting anything out of hand that remotely smells of worldliness. Quote
