Twilight Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Perhaps it is malicious arguing that Mr. Stan no longer wants? That would be sensible, but even that desire is probably, (whilst commendable) not realistic on an internet chat board. :-) Quote The best wisdom is always second hand...

Dr. Rich Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 This forum would not exist without argument. Real argument is vital for every blog, even if it is unilateral for a one sided blog would be argument for that side only. Teaching and preaching all involve argument. Satan was allowed to present his side in heaven. But name calling or making fun of people's argument makes void real argument. Has anyone tried to argue with the IRS? I have and it is not pleasent. No matter how much reasonable evidence I provided, they refused to even look at it--saying it's there way or the highway. Our courts WERE set up (they don't act that way now) for argument. Lawyers learn the art of argument. Every point or issue must be backed up with reasonable evidence that the court will allow. There are rules for evidence just as there are rules for the court itself. One of those rules is that hearsay evidence will not be allowed--for good reason I might add. Now I am not saying that Stan should run this forum like a court, but even the court will not allow fighting among the parties. If someone has an argument, good or bad, and if anyone wants to respond, they should respond to the argument and not the party. We have all been guilty of responding with a short response like "That's stupid"-all the while not providing evidence supporting why they think 'it is stupid'. Twilight's question on what is meant by 'argue' is a good one for the above reasons. Dr. Rich (SDA) Quote
Administrators Gail Posted August 13, 2009 Administrators Posted August 13, 2009 Putting forward one's opinion is not the same as continually arguing and not getting anywhere. If arguing was so good, then why does it drive people away instead of drawing them in? And that is the situation we have here. Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Dr. Rich Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Gail, if argument was to get more people on your side, then Jesus was not very good at it because they wanted to kill Him just because of His argument. Take a look at the sermon on the mount. It drove those away who refused to proved any evidence against what Jesus said. If one is really honest with himself, he will keep an open mind to receive new truth provided in a manner which can't be rebutted by evidence otherwise. Quote

Dr. Rich Posted August 13, 2009 Posted August 13, 2009 Isn't there a difference between a blog and a bulletin board or even a question and answer page? I find it interesting that those in our government are telling us that those who disagree with their proposed health care are troublemakers. Stan, is the same thing you think about those who provide statements or questions here that are not main stream SDA or even Christian? Quote
