Twilight Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Does anyone else but me think it's weird how communion consists of a tiny wafer and a few drops of grape juice when it was originally an actual meal? Maybe the size of the congregation has fashioned it? Or maybe we subconsciously have adopted the RC forms in many respects? Mark Quote The best wisdom is always second hand...
Woody Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 Does anyone else but me think it's weird how communion consists of a tiny wafer and a few drops of grape juice when it was originally an actual meal? I think the symbolism is more important than doing exactly what was done. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
SivartM Posted November 1, 2009 Author Posted November 1, 2009 Yeah, but I can't see Jewish parents giving their kids a little wafer and a few drops of grape juice and telling them to have a nice Passover supper. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets." - Jesus
Woody Posted November 1, 2009 Posted November 1, 2009 I can understand your concern. This is why our church and others will have a complete meal on occasions. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
Haldog Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 The original was the Passover meal which included eating a whole roasted lamb, including the entrails. I'm sure ellen put a stop to that real quick. What is surprising to me is that SDA's go through the motions of the communion but I have never once in 40 years ever hear them say why we should eat the unleavened bread. According to Paul in I Cor. 12 that is why many are sick, feeble and die an early death. Shalom Quote "You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. If you find out that you were wrong and change your thinking then you are the better for it. If you go to the Word and find out that you were right then you have been strengthened. But either way always go to the Word!!” Billye Brim
SivartM Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 The last supper didn't have a lamb. I wonder if that's why most people have never eaten lamb at communion even before Ellen White's time. Jesus is our Passover lamb. They always tell the meaning of the bread and wine at my church. The bread is Jesus' body which was broken for us. Quote "Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much." - Oscar WildeDo to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Guest Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I don't see where it says to eat the entrails. I do see where it says to burn them. Lev 1:9 But its entrails and its legs shall he wash in water: and the priest shall burn all on the altar, to be a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet aroma unto the LORD. Lev 4:11,12 And the skin of the bullock, and all its flesh, with its head, and with its legs, and its entrails, and its dung, Even the whole bullock shall he carry forth outside the camp unto a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn it on the wood with fire: where the ashes are poured out shall it be burned. Quote
Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted November 2, 2009 Administrators Posted November 2, 2009 The last supper didn't have a lamb... Just curious, where do you find evidence or support for that statement? Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. That could be very important to establish. With all the latest fascination with the feasts, one overly enthusiastic believer reading this board could have ended up doing some very strange things... :-) You could turn up at your next communion and find entrails on the table... Haldog Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 I don't see where it says to eat the entrails. I do see where it says to burn them. Exodus 12:9-10 "Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire - it's head with it's legs and entrails. You shall let none it of it remain until morning,..." Another thing I have noticed about the SDA observance of communion, I have never seen them use Jewish unleavened bread. Not saying that you have to, but there is so much symbolism in the real matza that it makes it much more meaningful. Real Jewish unleavened bread (matza) by tradition is made a distinct way, further symbolizing Jesus Christ. First off it is burnt, symbolizing God's wrath pored out on Jesus on the cross. Second, it has stripes on it to remind us of the stripes for our healing which Jesus took before the crucifixion. Third, it has holes pierced through it just as Jesus was pierced. Fourth, of course, it is unleavened, illustrating that He was free of any sin. The Jews to this day do not know why they make it that way but they continue to do so. Books can be written on the symbolism in the Passover so this is just a taste. Quote "You may not agree with everyone. Haldog Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 That was interesting, thank you for sharing that. Mark :-) You can pick up the matza at most any grocery store in either the ethnic food section or the cracker/cookie isle. We perform communion every couple weeks in our home, for healing, fellowship, etc. For more interesting thoughts, check out I Corinthians 11:23-34. Paul is speaking to the early church, believers. Pay attention to verse 30 "for this reason many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep." What reason? It surely isn't because they eat meat, smoke or drink alcohol. THIS is the biblical "health message". Quote "You may not agree with everyone. But if you are an honest man, when someone says something you disagree with it’ll drive you to the Word. Administrators Gail Posted November 2, 2009 Administrators Posted November 2, 2009 Thanks, haldog, for those interesting little informational tidbits! Quote Isaiah 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.
Haldog Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Hey Haldog, do you eat entrails? LOL Richard. No, I have a hard time just eating regular meat but I'm learning to like it. Jesus is my Passover lamb, just as John the Baptist declared Him. There is no need to follow the Torah because it was ALL fulfilled in Jesus. He instructed us to do the communion elements, the wine and unleavened bread and that is what I do. Quote "You may not agree with everyone. Woody Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Praise God we are not Jews and have not made a long list of rules on how to keep it. Quote May we be one so that the world may be won. Christian from the cradle to the grave I believe in Hematology.
SivartM Posted November 2, 2009 Author Posted November 2, 2009 Jesus said that we should do good on the Sabbath. But this is getting off topic. Haldog Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Wonderful. I also keep the Sabbath as Jesus said to do. It's a great blessing. You "keep" the sabbath? Jesus IS the sabbath. Sabbath means rest. The sabbaths as the Jews practiced them were a type and shadow of Jesus Christ. Once we are resting in Him it is demonstrating unbelief to keep a day of the week. Woody Posted November 2, 2009 Posted November 2, 2009 Remember the Sabbath day to 'keep' it Holy ... As one of God's children ... I follow his Ten Commandments. Which ones are you opposed to?
