teresaq Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Quote: Jesus said that demons "enter" people's bodies and "dwell" in them. Jesus also said that evil spirits "go out of a man." Luke 11: 24, 26. This is literal. do you also believe that we are literally dwelling inside of Christ, because "He said so"? or is Christ using figurative language? Joh 6:56 He ... dwelleth in me, ... how about where Christ said, Joh 14:10 Believest ...that I am in the Father, .... as for Luk 11:24 ..., he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. 25 And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. do you believe that a broom was literally used to sweep the inside of man and that the inside of the man was literally "garnished"? if so, in what manner? i mean was the inside of man painted or wall-papered, for starters? notice the original meanings of the words used: and they enter in,G1525 and dwellG2730 there: enter in G1525 eiserchomai From G1519 and G2064; to enter (literally or figuratively):... dwell G2730 katoikeō From G2596 and G3611; to house permanently, that is, reside (literally or figuratively):... notice: Act 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. lets see what the original word means when it is translated "filled". Quote: G4130 plēthō A prolonged form of a primary word pleō (which appears only as an alternate in certain tenses and in the reduplicated form of pimplēmi to “fill” (literally or figuratively [imbue, influence, supply]); specifically to fulfil (time): - accomplish, full (. . . come), furnish. the Holy Spirit influences us and can eventually imbue us if we continually submit. by the same token demons also influences us and can eventually imbue us if we continually submit. then our consciences become "seared as with an iron" no longer impressible by the HS and eternally lost. Let's stick to one thing at a time, unless it's your point that the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the same as being demon-possessed. I would suggest that if people can be possessed by demons, people can also be possessed by the Holy Spirit. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
pnattmbtc Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 What do you think the phrase "the Holy Spirit dwells in me" means? Quote Christ exalted the character of God, attributing to him the praise, and giving to him the credit, of the whole purpose of his own mission on earth,--to set men right through the revelation of God.
Moderators John317 Posted December 27, 2009 Moderators Posted December 27, 2009 Here's my question. When you say that phrase, "The Holy Spirit dwells is me" is literal, what does that mean? In other words, please say this phrase in some other way, so it can be understood what you think this phrase means. "Dwelling" means to live, so when we say that the Holy Spirit dwells in believers, we are really saying the Holy Spirit lives in believers. We mean that He is really in our lives. The Bible says that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He is capable of being everywhere at the same time. He can be with and in every person simultaneously, as personally as Christ was with the disciples. In fact, as you will recall, Christ said that it was to our benefit for Him to go to heaven, because He was only able to be in one place at a time, but the Holy Spirit can be in each individual believer as if that person is the only person on earth. See the following verses which speak of the Holy Spirit being within people in the Old Testament: Numbers 27: 18; Deut. 34:9; Ezekiel 2: 2; 3: 24; Daniel 4: 8-9, 18; 5: 11; Micah 3: 8. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. [17] For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
pnattmbtc Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Ok, thank you! So you do understand this to be physical presence? That is, He dwells in our chest, or something like that? Quote Christ exalted the character of God, attributing to him the praise, and giving to him the credit, of the whole purpose of his own mission on earth,--to set men right through the revelation of God.
pnattmbtc Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Thanks for the Scripture references. I also wanted to ask a question in relation to demon possession and being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit. Do you see a difference? Quote Christ exalted the character of God, attributing to him the praise, and giving to him the credit, of the whole purpose of his own mission on earth,--to set men right through the revelation of God.
Guest Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Ok, thank you! So you do understand this to be physical presence? Yep, it's real. That's why you need to keep your body clean. 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Guest Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 No, I gave you two scripture references. 1Co 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 1Co 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. If we all sang the same note in the choir, there'd never be any harmony. Funny, isn't it, how we accept Grace for ourselves and demand justice for others?
pnattmbtc Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 Richard, I want to know what you think the phrase means. It's really amazing to me that no one seems able to answer this. To refresh the memory, the question is, what does it mean to say "The Holy Spirit dwells in me." To simply repeat the statement doesn't answer the question. It just appears that you have no idea what you think it means. John is the only one so far, of those saying this phrase is literal, which has said anything which could even be considered as a start to answering this question, which is this: Quote: We mean that He is really in our lives. This is an attempt to answer the question to put the phrase "the Holy Spirit dwells in me" in other words. It's a bit sparse, but it's a start. Would you care to add anything? Do you agree with John's comment, that "the Holy Spirit dwells in me" means "He is really in our lives"? Quote Christ exalted the character of God, attributing to him the praise, and giving to him the credit, of the whole purpose of his own mission on earth,--to set men right through the revelation of God.

Moderators John317 Posted December 28, 2009 Moderators Posted December 28, 2009 Thanks for the Scripture references. I also wanted to ask a question in relation to demon possession and being in dwelt by the Holy Spirit. Do you see a difference? Yes, a big difference. One is God and the other are evil spirits. Both, however, are spiritual beings, and both come into us if we invite them. The evil spirits come into people when they give them their permission to take over. By His personal representative, the Holy Spirit, Jesus also comes into us. See Rev. 3: 20 where Jesus says He will come in to us if we will open the door and invite Him in. Quote John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
