Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted January 10, 2013 Administrators Posted January 10, 2013 Uhhh... the 22 children in China were not killed by the mad man with the knife. Only two were injured seriously enough to require hospitalization. But all survived. One thing wrong. How about the rest? Quote "Absurdity reigns and confusion makes it look good." "Sinless perfection is such a shallow goal." "I love God only as much as the person I love the least." *Forgiveness is always good news. And that is the gospel truth. (And finally, the ideas expressed above are solely my person views and not that of any organization with which I am associated.)
Moderators lazarus Posted January 10, 2013 Author Moderators Posted January 10, 2013 The responsible use of firearms in the hands of the law-abiding citizen is a bigger promoter of public safety than restrictive gun laws. I'm assuming you a making a comparison. I would agree that the vast majority of gun owners are responsible but this has NOT led to a society that is safer than a society that has restrictive gun laws. The US is startlingly less safe in terms of death by gun. The are many other factors that have brought America to this place of having a disproportionately high death-by-gun rate but surely the availability and types of "tools" used to produce these deaths is a key factor. That is what causes most of these problems, not the darn guns. Quote

Spirit of God. Character. Culture. Consequences. Laws. Quote Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. Consequences. Laws. Correct. Now try instilling those same characteristics in those that lack same by waving of a new law on top of existing laws. Especially the consequence and law part. Those bent on mass murder generally have embraced the consequence, that of their own death, either by police or shooting themselves. The law really has little to offer them as a deterrent. The law that says you are not to obtain a weapon illegally would be laughable to them. Quote Everything you do is based on the choices you make. Ted Oplinger Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Tom, the first reports out of China indicated the stabbings were fatal. Which is true, though? the revised accounts, or the original? The Chinese authorities are wonderful revisionists when it comes to embarrassing the West. If indeed the revised accounts are true, it still begs the question: what Chinese law prevented this man from using his knife on all those children in a school? The case I made is still the same: when denied a gun, a slayer will use something else in the effort to perpetrate the crime - regardless of whether the result is death, or mere wounding Blessings. Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. To take the cross of Christ means to depend solely on Him for everything, and this is the abasement of all human pride. Men love to fancy themselves independent. But let the cross be preached, let it be made known that in man dwells no good thing and that all must be received as a gift, and straightway someone is offended." Ellet J. Waggoner, The Glad Tidings "Courage is being scared to death - and saddling up anyway" - John Wayne "The person who pays an ounce of principle for a pound of popularity gets badly cheated" - Ronald Reagan
Ted Oplinger Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Glad you're not against guns. Hope your time at the range is a productive exercise in true control. However, I must say, you're not tying guns to crime in a simple, straight-forward way. Blessings, Quote "As iron sharpens iron, so also does one man sharpen another" - Proverbs 27:17 "The offense of the cross is that the cross is a confession of human frailty and sin and of inability to do any good thing. Ted Oplinger Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 And you don't think others would, by the same graces? Kind of selling God short, isn't it? The US is startlingly less safe in terms of death by gun. The are many other factors that have brought America to this place of having a disproportionately high death-by-gun rate but surely the availability and types of "tools" used to produce these deaths is a key factor. The comparison I make is between those areas of American where the honest, law-abiding citizen is entrusted, and allowed full choice in their tools (guns), licenses, and training to carry our defense of life, loved ones, and property, versus those areas of our country which do not trust the law-abiding common man in this role. In every case, crime is significantly lower where the common man is trusted, equipped, and trained for the responsibility of protesting themselves and others. It is markedly higher in those areas where gun restrictions are the highest. In the last 3 decades, everywhere where such legislation is begun to entrust the citizen in this role, there are dire warnings made by those who won't trust the citizen. Wild shootings sprees and shoot-outs. People pulling guns out for little reason on the slightest provocation. Vigilantism. Wannabe-cops acting like Dirty Harry. The list goes on. In every case where such arguments fail, the gun laws relaxed, and the citizen is further entrusted, crime goes down. Significantly. I compare that with those areas where such arguments hold sway - the common citizen cannot be trusted. Gun-free zones and gun restrictions enable the criminal, and crime is significantly higher. The answer is declared to be police, more laws, less guns available. The result in America has always been the same - emboldened criminals, more crime. How many legal gun shops are there in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C.? If my investigating is correct, none. All have severe handgun restrictions, and no concealed carry. Gun crime and shootings - particularly in the low income areas, are incredibly high, and skew the national average. In most cases, the perpetrators in the crime 1) violate laws already on the books concerning "possession" and "concealed weapons", and 2) illegally obtain their gun (buy from an illegal source or steal it). It is not the tools of the trade which are the problem, it is the people using the tools. Where the law-abiding are entrusted and equally equipped versus the criminal, crime goes down, despite wider availability. Where the law-abiding is not entrusted, and the criminal has the tools, shooting crime goes up, despite the lowered access and availability of guns. This comparison has been upheld throughout this nation. Instead of fighting the common man, we should be following the successful pattern already demonstrated. Blessings. Guest Posted January 10, 2013 Posted January 10, 2013 Very much a novice actually. What would stop me? Spirit of God. Character. Culture. Consequences. Laws. Oh, so basically the same things that stop every other responsible gun owner from committing crime. Keep practicing. And always remember, gently squeeze, don't pull. Quote
BelizeMissionary Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 ummmm, there was no automatic weapon my friend. The AR-15 "Assault rifle" (Which isn't actually by definition an assault rifle) was left in the car. I might also add that the AR in AR-15 does NOT stand for Assault rifle as is popularly believed, it stands for Armalite, the company that originally produced it. The AR-15 and his hand guns were SEMI-automatic. SEMI means one pull of the trigger gets you one round, and most guns produced today with the exception of shotguns are semi-automatic. AUTOMATIC weapons will fire round after round as long as the trigger is pulled and they are already illegal and were not used in Newtown. Quote
