BobRyan Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I grew up in the country in an area where guns were a good thing. I grew up with guns, so did my brother, my children and grandchildren. Administrators Tom Wetmore Posted January 6, 2013 Administrators Posted January 6, 2013 This bit of misleading nonsense has gone viral, but it is simply not correct. Article says hammers are deadlier than rifles, leaves out other guns The intrepid bloggers at Breitbart have a super-clickable headline today, one that announces more people are killed annually by hammers than by rifles. According to the FBI's annual crime statistics, that's a true statement, believe it or not (we didn't at first). But they're not including the biggest number on the bureau's carefully itemized homicide chart. In 2011, although there were 323 counts of death-by-rifle — and 496 people killed by hammers and other blunt objects — there were 8,583 firearm-related homicides. Gun killings made up 68 percent of the homicides in 2011. CoAspen Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I see two main thoughts with all the rhetoric about greater control of guns. 1. Band Aid solutions, treat the symptoms not the cause Put armed guard at schools, arm teachers, armored clothing for children, all of which are in the process to some degree. 2. INCONGRUOUS,lacking congruity a : not harmonious : incompatible b : not conforming : disagreeing c : inconsistent within itself Much wailing and nashing of teeth about homosexuality and all the evil it causes, while crying out its my right to have weapons that cause 'mass destruction' of life and to use them, couched in terms of 'protection', by those who claim to have a deep belief in a God that says He will protect us. All of this is consistent with what we see around us on a daily basis. We are a society that treats symptoms while downplaying core problem. It is also consistent with do as I say,not what I do. In christianity there is a strong core of belief that this nation can only survive and spread the 'gospel', what ever that maybe, by having a strong backing of force. To quote a character on the old TV show, Laugh In, "Very interesting!!" Quote

I agree with you totally about treating the symptonms, as opposed to the core problem. I disagree with you about a core belief of having a strong backing of force to spread the gospel. I believe the strong backing of force is so that our government can spread "democracy", as they say. I don't agree with it because I believe in a form of Isolationism and leaving other countries alone, unless they truly attack us. Quote

Moderators Bravus Posted January 7, 2013 Moderators Posted January 7, 2013 That graphic is a complete lie. It separates out assault rifles specifically from all other kinds of firearms. It's not comparing like with like. There were 31,347 firearm deaths in the US in 2011. Quote Truth is important

Guest Posted January 8, 2013 Posted January 8, 2013 FBI: More People Killed with Hammers, Clubs Each Year than Rifles According to the FBI annual crime statistics, the number of murders committed annually with hammers and clubs far outnumbers the number of murders committed with a rifle. This is an interesting fact, particularly amid the Democrats’ feverish push to ban many different rifles, ostensibly to keep us safe of course. However, it appears the zeal of Sens. like Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) is misdirected. For in looking at the FBI numbers from 2005 to 2011, the number of murders by hammers and clubs consistently exceeds the number of murders committed with a rifle. Think about it: In 2005, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 445, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 605. In 2006, the number of murders committed with a rifle was 438, while the number of murders committed with hammers and clubs was 618. And so the list goes, with the actual numbers changing somewhat from year to year, yet the fact that more people are killed with blunt objects each year remains constant. For example, in 2011, there was 323 murders committed with a rifle but 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs. While the FBI makes is clear that some of the “murder by rifle” numbers could be adjusted up slightly, when you take into account murders with non-categorized types of guns, it does not change the fact that their annual reports consistently show more lives are taken each year with these blunt objects than are taken with Feinstein’s dreaded rifle. Another interesting fact: According to the FBI, nearly twice as many people are killed by hands and fists each year than are killed by murderers who use rifles. The bottom line: A rifle ban is as illogical as it is unconstitutional. We face far greater danger from individuals armed with carpenters’ tools and a caveman’s stick. And it seems fairly obvious that if more people had a gun, less people would be inclined to try to hit them in the head with a hammer. http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/...han-With-Rifles Quote
