Forks are making people fat.

That analogy would work if people were force feeding other people to obesity or if Homes shot himself 100 times with his AR 15, his gun jammed and he then proceeded to shoot himself with 30 more rounds with his Glock.

Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence.

It is not the availability of guns. It is all because of the people. Why is it that you are not able to see this. No guns when Jesus was alive but he got killed anyway.

In London, UK one of the big challenges is knife crime. Londoners are not better behaved than New Yorkers. My guess is that if guns were available at the local convenience store those knives would soon be left in the kitchen drawer. Again I'm not arguing for no guns but I'm wondering if there is a sensible solution to this killingry.

I can't go and buy a rocket launcher or C4. Why is that? I wouldn't mind having a few packets of C4 in my armory.

Good job that there were no guns. Those early hymn writers would have had a hard time trying to rhyme assault rife.

>>they all open up on whoever they *think* is the 'bad guy'.<<

Is Roboguy, all packed up in Kevlar and lit up by muzzle flash.

>>""“Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword.

Matthew 26:52 NLT<<

Didn't Satint Peter use a sword? Did he die by the sword? No?--then the verse (though corrupted) must speak to issues more profound than as presented, yes?

>>If only he had been black, [...] America would be a safer place.<< [ed.jasd]

Funny..., you should bring that up...

BTW, guns don't kill people, people do!

>>Does that statement really help us?<<

Evidently not.

>>I suppose we could also say:

Cruise missiles don't kill people, people do.

Hand Grenades don't kill people, people do.

IED's don't kill people, people do.

Weaponized bird flue does not kill people, people do.<<

Indeed, and one may also say that the simple mouthing of Utopian platitudes - solves world problems. Matter-of-fact, "Things will become worse; so much so that men's hearts will fail for the fear of those things." Jesus Christ, in relatively good times, advised the Xtian to sell his garment (even if he must go naked) and buy that sword, knife, gun, whatever... for the protection of his family, else he is worse than an infidel. [/paraphrased]

How much more emphatic the words - Jesus Christ would use today?

One might also want to read Alexander Alexander Solzhenitsyn. (incidentally, the scourge that was inflicted upon the multiples of millions in Solzhenitsyn's land -and which afterwards traveled elsewhere - originated in large part from the left in America - read your history)

>>guns or accessories that would enable an individual to kill so many is such a short time.<<

How many fractions of a second would it take a bomb to kill or maim almost everyone who attended the screening?

>>All of those involved in the most high profile killings in recent years had high capacity magazines.<<

They're not really insane as claimed by their lawyers, eh?--I mean, they choose based upon efficiency. Anyway, did you forget Nidal Malik Hasan -- who killed 13 people and wounded 29 others at Fort Hood in '09? His weapon of choice was a Glock 17. (kidding, it wasn't a Glock - it was an FN) Allahu Akbar! indeed.

I guess that the only rational course - is to take your Glock, yes?

>>Of course we can shrug and move on or look at the practical and cultural solutions to the problem of gun violence.<<

That has proved politically unacceptable. Mebbe, one reason why so many homicides in America...

>>IMHO. Despite the availability of guns Americans seem to be more afraid of their government than Europeans.<<

European Socialism will do that to a man's mind; that is, drone it.

>>Europeans seem to be much more willing to take to the streets and protest and resist authority.<<

For sure the non-indigenous do.

>>I find, living here that people are more deferential and even afraid of the police and consequently police are generally aggressive and arrogant.<<

The worm turns.

>>I not sure that having a couple of AR-15 and a 100 round mag best and most effective answer.<<

But it will get those carrying AR-15s into the local armory, or 'persuade' the quartermaster, or...

>>I'm sorry son, sorry daughter, sorry wife that you were murdered, but thats the price you have to pay so that I can own my gun!<<

Sheesh. Pishtosh. Yeah, remember the Katyn Forest massacreeeee... the mothers, wives, and daughters of the improperly armed and prepared. Remember also that those who committed the atrocity also disarmed their own citizens in peacetime.

>>Lets all get down on our knees thanking God and salute the flag for our freedom....if your alive!!!!<<

Huh?

>>Glory, glory alleluia...<<

Definitely, want you on my six should things go bad.

>>to shoot himself with 30 more rounds with his Glock.<<

Whoa, a 9x30 Glock?--ah sheesh, you talking extender mags. For a minute there I was thinking, "Hey Santa! Hey Santa! listen here - Xmas is coming..."

>>It is not the availability of guns. It is all because of the people. [...] No guns when Jesus was alive but he got killed anyway.<< {ed.jasd]

So, whys the political southpaw unable to grasp simplest facts? Circulumtorical kind o' edjeekashun, ah sez, y'knows - NY Times, Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS kinds... not mention alla thems Frat U higher-up tipes o' mental-woshing you's hear'n 'bout.

Why is it as soon as a major tragedy occurs many start demanding more laws.Thousands and thousands on the books, but one more will certainly take care of the problem.

Someone planning to murder as many as possible would certainly be stopped if it meant disobeying the law and buying illegal weapons. In whose real world?

Of all the statistics cited, how many illegal guns are used in homicides or other crimes? Does anyone believe that a law will stop those that want weapons of any kind?

Everything you do is based on the choices you make. It's not your parents, your past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make, period ... ... Wish more people would realize this.

It's true that it's because of the people. There are other countries with weapon ownership as high. Indeed, every home in Switzerland has an assault rifle. Yet their levels of gun deaths are dramatically lower.

It's not a gun issue, it's a soul issue: and America's soul is deathly ill.

(think a little about the differences between Switzerland and America before jumping to diagnose *that*, too...)

Exactly. Hollywood, entertainment etc are both complicit. Or maybe it's the water over here.

If guns should be illegal because people use them to kill others, then perhaps fertilizer should also be illegal. Anyone remember Oklahoma City? 169 people and a match?

I think the right answer regarding the ownership of assault rifles in Switzerland, is that every Swiss-born [native] family owns one... but I may be wrong. I have asked an Adventist friend of mine, a Swiss national who actually lives in Switzerland, what the scoop is.. I'm awaiting his answer.

'Every' may have been an overstatement on my part, but elsewhere in the article it talks about 420,000 assault rifles (the Sig 550 is actually full-auto, not semi, while the men are militia members), and a total of something like 1.2 million military weapons in homes. In country with a population under 8 million, that's more like one in every third or fourth home... so I overstated. But still, that's an awful lot of powerful military weapons in a country that has *far* lower gun death rates (on a per capita basis) than the US.

Quote:
The Swiss army has long been a militia trained and structured to rapidly respond against foreign aggression. Swiss males grow up expecting to undergo basic military training, usually at age 20 in the Rekrutenschule (German for "recruit school"), the initial boot camp, after which Swiss men remain part of the "militia" in reserve capacity until age 30 (age 34 for officers). Each such individual is required to keep his army-issued personal weapon (the 5.56x45mm Sig 550 rifle for enlisted personnel and/or the 9mm SIG-Sauer P220 semi-automatic pistol for officers, medical and postal personnel) at home.

I just got the answer from my Swiss friend:

That with the rifle used to be so in the past but the law has changed and there are always less of them.

Don't think anyone here has said guns should be illegal.

It might be helpful to think principle. The NLT doesn't necessarily make it easy to deduce that Jesus was talking about the person or people who use the sword against the lives of others as a practice.

Two-thirds of the 179,000 homicides committed during the 2000s made use of a firearm, usually a handgun.

• If a gun is used during a domestic violence assault, there’s a 23-fold increased likelihood that the victim will die. Women who are victims of domestic violence are five times more likely to be killed if their abuser owns a firearm.

• Having a gun facilitates suicide. According to a California study, suicide by handgun is the leading cause of death in the first year after people buy one. Many don’t wait that long. In the first week after the purchase of a handgun, the suicide rate among firearm purchasers was 57 times as high as the adjusted rate in the general population. More than 75 percent of guns used in suicide attempts and accidental injuries of people under 20 were stored in the home of the victim, a relative, or friend. Would all these people have committed suicide if a gun had not been easily available? Some would have, of course, but the easier (and faster) it is to kill one’s self, the more likely a person is to do it.

The argument will be made that if an obsessive and insane person such as James Holmes, the Colorado shooter, is determined to kill, he (and it almost always is a he) will find a way to do so. That may be true but the AR-15 Holmes was using enabled him to kill with almost unparalleled efficiency and speed (until it jammed). Do we need to make it easy and legal for homicidal maniacs to rack up body counts? What justification can there be for allowing people to buy weapons with the ability to shoot 50 to 60 rounds per minute?

You'll be surprised at how many of our shepherds who feel they need "tools". Sometimes it takes more than a staff to keep the sheep in line.
