Moderators Gerr Posted August 29, 2013 Moderators Posted August 29, 2013 Let's turn this around a bit...... IF all sins are rewarded with death, then why not all jobs the equivalent of a CEO's salary? Do you think Hitler & Stalin will die as quickly in hell as the other thief on the cross? Quote: If the value of a job also leads to valuation of the individual, then there will be a portion of society that will always be revered and another portion looked down upon.... Which, morally speaking, is not right..... Looking down on people no matter what their station in life is morally reprehensible, but rewarding people according to their contribution to society is morally right, imho. Granted, there are many people who are disproportionately rewarded/unrewarded. So the question then as I raised earlier is - how do we determine a person's worth? Quote
LifeHiscost Posted August 29, 2013 Author Posted August 29, 2013 Quote: So the question then as I raised earlier is - how do we determine a person's worth? By the price paid for him/her by the Creator Himself. "“Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed; For in the image of God He made man." Genesis 9:6 NKJV "For God loved so the world [Forsooth God so loved the world], that he gave his one begotten Son, that each man that believeth in him perish not, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world, that he judge the world, but that the world be saved by him. "John 3:16-17 WYC Brackets theirs LHC And Og , I believe you had something to do with writing this text. BTW If this above is seen as only of "spiritual" significance, what would this below indicate about God's plans for those redeemed. "They shall build houses and inhabit them. They shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; They shall not plant and another eat; For as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of My people, And My elect shall long enjoy the work of their hands."Isaiah 65:20-22 NKJV God cares! Members phkrause Posted August 29, 2013 Members Posted August 29, 2013 In our twisted economy, the most important contributors to society (e.g., teachers, day-care providers, and non-professional health-care providers)are paid the least; and those who contribute little or nothing to the betterment of humanity (e.g., actors, rock musicians, professional athletes)are paid the most. Concerning the CEO pay question, I think a CEO, COO, CTO, etc. should pay more than less weighty positions. But is a day's work by a big-company CEO worth as much as a year's work by a staff professional? I make a good 5-figure salary every year. At $10 Million per year, a big-company CEO makes as much in a day and a half as I make in a year. Is a CEO really worth that much? People responsible for educating our children sufficiently to live independently make $30 - $50k per year. Less than half the salary of the aforementioned CEO. Are they really worth that little? Excellent question JoeMo! I'd say they don't! The reason I say that is this. Here's a story about a company that used to be around, up here in Mass. When we first moved up here, Wang Corporation was one, if not, the best computer company. Around "81/82, the press I was working for got sold, and the new owners had Wang as a customer. So we did lots of work for them. Several years later they started laying there workers off, till all that was left was management personal. Who continued to get pay raises. Well without the labor force the company went out of business. Pretty sad when companies keep giving raises to the higher 1% but refuse to give there work force what they deserve. Just like these banks that we bailed out continue to give raises to the same people that bankrupt them in the first place, pretty sad. joeb Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 Are you saying that everyone one the dole or assistance are all disabled? My wife's niece who lived in Florida lost her job. She didn't look for a job for almost a year. She only started looking when she knew her unemployment benefit was running out. I had a patient once who kept trying to get disability. My employees could see him out the window in the parking lot walking without any problem. But once he came through the door would limp in! So, as far as you're concerned, anyone on disability, unemployment, or completely out of what is considered to be the work force, is like the two examples you gave. That's exactly how you come across.... Of course there are freeloaders. There always has been. But you're taking them as an example and condemning everyone on those programs. I don't think you even realize it though. Quote Liberty cannot be established without morality, nor morality without faith.Alexis de Tocqueville
joeb Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 I challenge this.... Name the fiscal policies that are hurting the working man implemented under Obama... 10 years ago, the republicans implemented a "doughnut hole" in medicare that covered the elderly that was cheap up front, but cost and took more money out of the pockets of the elderly if they exceeded cost of care in 2 years...It cause many to declare bankruptcy and was poorly explained to them. It hurt many..Under Obama, that has been omitted from the medicare insurance... There are far more things that are implemented that help the general public more than specialized groups.... Of course you challenge what I'm saying. Am I going to give you another example to ignore? Not a chance. joeb Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 When I asked the question - how do we determine how much a persone is worth - I was not talking about their spiritual value. We are talking about economics here. Yes, the value of even the man in the gutter can only be measured by what God spent to redeem him. However, we also live in a fallen world. I believe that there is a value system even in God's economy. If more accountability is required of those given much, then the rewards must also be proportionate. If a person can't learn how to fish after you've shown him 70x7, he/she is either an idiot (in which case the humane thing to do is to keep feeding), or refuses to learn and just wants to live on the fruit of others' sweat. I personally refuse to be a party in producing/encouraging irresponsible people. No, I haven't seen the film but we are planning to see it. Your bias is showing Gerry. As far as you're concerned everyone fits in one of two categories if they aren't working. They're either idiots or they're too lazy to work. What an attitude. Liz Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 If a guy can't learn how to fish, after being shown 70 times 70, then that guy needs to learn to be a vegetarian. How do we determine how much a person is worth? I guess by the job that needs to be done. While I can take the trash all the way to dump myself, I readily pay the city $15 dollars a month to do it for me. However, if I need an operation, I don't mind paying the doctor more as long as I don't have to lose my house to pay for it. CoAspen Posted August 29, 2013 Posted August 29, 2013 How rapidly we make the topic about 'others', rather than for ourselves. The original question(How expensive is too expensive? can only be answered for ourselves, not for others. It's a human condition, not me it's them! I don't spend too much, they do! Really? The only way I can read my Bible and the words of Christ, is to look at myelves, He will take care of others. Why do these type of topics degenerate into who deserves and who doesn't? Is that true spirituality, as laid out by Christ? Tis amazing how often we repeat those words of Cain...."Am I my brothers keeper?" What were the words of Christ in the parable about the saved and lost.....'you, who have taken care of others, have taken care of me'...do we remember them? Quote

If what you are saying about what I said is true, then I would be advocating termination of welfare or all assistance to needy people. I have already made t clear I have never and would never do such a thing because there ARE needy people! I have certified some people as disabled while I was practicing medicine. So don't accuse me of something that has not even crossed my mind! Quote

I may be hard on the moochers, but I have already stated that I have never and would NEVER advocate termination of welfare or ANY assistance program! In fact, I even said I would provide supplementary income to those who work but cannot earn enough to live on! BTW, I remember having four patients with Down's Syndrome who were under the care of a foster couple. These all had jobs they went to every day! Simple, menial jobs, mind you, but even they did something! Quote
