TEEN PLAYING 'KNOCKOUT GAME' SHOT TWICE BY VICTIM

by AWR HAWKINS 21 Nov 2013 1851 POST A COMMENT

A teen playing the "Knockout Game" in Lansing, Michigan unwittingly targeted a concealed carry permit holder and was shot twice. He survived and is now in jail.

As Breitbart News previously reported, the "Knockout Game" thrives in areas where victims are unarmed. In the "game," teens approach a stranger on the sidewalk or in an alley and punch the stranger in an attempt to knock him or her out. A punch that results in a knockout scores one point.

WILX in Lansing reported that teenager Marvell Weaver, who is black, tried to knock out a father who was standing at a bus stop waiting for his daughter to arrive. Instead of simply punching the father, Weaver tried a variation on the "game" by trying to taze the man. The taser malfunctioned, and the father pulled a .40 cal handgun and shot the teenager twice.

Weaver admits to previously knocking out six or seven people on other days before targeting the man who shot him. He said being shot by the father at the bus stop was "a lesson learned."

Weaver is now serving one year in jail.

Marvell Weaver, Teen Playing 'Knockout' With Stun Gun, Shot Twice By Victim

The Huffington Post | By Andres Jauregui

A Michigan teenager who assaulted a man with a stun gun was shot twice when the victim defended himself with a legally concealed pistol.

In May, Marvell Weaver, 17, was playing a variation of "knockout," a brutal and senseless game in which an assailant sucker punches an unsuspecting person with the intention of knocking him unconscious with one blow. The difference was that Weaver decided to attack his victim with a stun gun.

But Weaver, who said he'd played the game about six or seven other times, didn't anticipate what would happen next. The intended victim, a 28-year-old father who was waiting for his 6-year-old daughter to get dropped off from school at a bus stop, had a gun on him.

"I saw the van circle twice, and the second time three kids came out. I didn't suspect anything. I hadn't any enemies, or any reason to believe they would be looking to do anything to me," the victim, who chose to remain anonymous, told WILX.

According to Michigan Live, Weaver approached the victim and turned, pressing the stun gun into the victim's side repeatedly. The weapon misfired, and Weaver turned to flee.

The victim thought he had been stabbed, drew his weapon and fired two shots, striking Weaver in the buttocks.

“It happened so fast I wasn’t sure. I just know something was shoved into my side. I wasn’t sure if it was a knife, if it was anything,” the victim told police.

According to Michigan Live, Weaver told the man who had just shot him, “I’m sorry, please don’t kill me. I don’t know why I did that. I’m high, you know. I just wanna go home.”

Weaver survived the shooting and was sentenced to a year in jail for the attack. He now regrets playing "knockout" and admits he got off easy for it.

"It was just a lesson learned. I wish I hadn't played the game at all," Weaver told WILX.

Lansing police said Weaver's story should serve as an example of the consequences of playing "knockout."

"There's a price to pay if they wind up doing it," Lansing Police spokesman Robert Merritt told WILX. "It's just senseless. Teenagers have a lot better things to do with their time."

Jesus is coming back. This is another sign. That's like saying "I don't like the freedom I have. I'm going to go and sucker punch someone, hurt and maybe kill them, so that I can go to prison, or get shot, and die or go to the hospital." That's crazy.

At least if a person is a drug dealer, or something like that you can trace that behavior back to some sort of material motive. You want money, so you deal drugs. That's no excuse, but there is some semblance of motive behind that.

But, to walk up and punch someone, to knock them out, just for the fun of it? I don't know. I can't fathom that. I don't understand it at all. If you get shot in the process of doing something like that, you were asking for it.

I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.

CNN: Is there really a “knockout game”?

POSTED AT 12:21 PM ON NOVEMBER 25, 2013 BY ED MORRISSEY

I’ve been skeptical about the “knockout game” story, perhaps because I’ve seen too many “rainbow bracelet” and other such reality-disconnected hysterias over the years. Moral panics have been with us for as long as … humans have organized themselves into civilizations, probably. I can still recall the urban legend from well before my blogging days that driving with headlights on during the day in Los Angeles would have gang members targeting people for random attacks. I never did that anyway, as I’d forget to turn them off and end up needing a jump start.

That doesn’t make the attacks any less real, though. CNN asks today whether these are just random attacks getting outsized media attention or a real trend — or whether the outsized media attention is creating the trend, as NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly warns:

The attacks themselves are real enough, and so are the deaths and injuries. Four people have been killed in similar assaults, which have nothing in common except the modus operandi. Even Al Sharpton was moved this weekend to condemn the “knockout game,” telling a Harlem audience, “We would not be silent if it was the other way around”:

“This kind of behavior is deplorable and must be condemned by all us,” he said at his weekly National Action Network meeting in Harlem. “We would not be silent if it was the other way around. We cannot be silent or in any way reluctant to confront it when it is coming from our own community.”

On Monday, Sharpton and other leaders plan to discuss a “next move.”

“Kids are randomly knocking out people [from] another race — some specifically going at Jewish people,” he said. “This kind of insane thuggery — there is nothing cute about that. There is no game play about knocking somebody out, and it is not a game. It is an assault and is bias, and it is wrong.”

Will this create enough of a pushback to shame the lawless into better behavior? Or will it turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy as the attacks gain more and more media attention? It’s a tough call, but if Sharpton finds it necessary to speak out, I’d say there’s more to it than just media boredom.

78-Year-Old Grandmother Becomes Latest 'Knockout' Victim

Posted: 11/20/2013 12:42 pm EST | Updated: 11/21/2013 2:40 pm EST

CBS 2 reported on a series of attacks on Jews in Brooklyn, allegedly part of a disturbing game that has teens punching Jewish adults in an effort to try to knock them over.

Now it appears the action -- dubbed the "knockout game" -- has spread. Violent videos shot in other cities and in as many as six states, show teenagers knocking into other victims on purpose including, most recently, a 78-year-old grandmother in Brooklyn.

The victim's daughter said she was walking along in broad daylight when a young African-American male knocked her down. He didn't take anything, she said, and didn't seem interested in anything but hitting her as hard as he could before running off.

“She had her purse, she had bags from department stores. There was not even an attempt to take anything from her. It was just a wanton act to hurt another human being,” the victim’s daughter told CBS 2.

Various media outlets have reported that police are investigating the string of attacks as possible hate crimes.

Watch the video for more information.

Brooklyn attack arrest: Is 'knockout game' a hate crime?

Growing reports of the 'knockout game' are forcing police to take a closer look at racial motivations while also being careful to not spark copycat attacks.

Christian Science Monitor By Patrik Jonsson

November 23, 2013 2:59 PM

Hate crime charges against a black Brooklyn man for assaulting a white man could raise the stakes over what to do about the so-called “knockout game,” where primarily young black men surprise white victims with a rain of punches – sometimes for a $5 bet.

Police have been receiving reports that indicate a wave of “knockout game” incidents primarily in the Northeast, and some police are now beginning to draw connections between individual reports. “I think it’s very real,” Sgt. Tom Connellan told the New York Times. “As opposed to a motive for assault, be it anger or robbery, this is strictly for a game.”

The apparent object of the game is to pick an unsuspecting victim and knock them out with a punch. The perpetrators are often described as ethically challenged teenagers, but the potential racial element has begun to be noticed more broadly by community leaders in places like Brooklyn.

Quoted by a local TV news station, Brooklyn Rabbi Yaacov Behrmann said that he believes the assaults are part of “a disturbing game by some African-American teens.”

Some experts insist the game is a “myth” that attempts to correlate unrelated attacks into a pattern with racial overtones. Parents of teens have referred to the attacks as “pranks” that spiral out of control. Police have also been reluctant to make too big of a deal about the attacks, concerned about creating the atmosphere for copy cat crimes.

But others contend there’s a buzz among youth about the game, and troubling instances seem to be cropping up with more regularity, according to some police sources. Police, too, have begun to respond in a more organized way, with some jurisdictions beefing up patrols and increasingly exploring hate crime charges.

Earlier this month, three Hoboken teenagers were charged with murder for killing a homeless man during an apparent “knockout game” attack. Police officials in Syracuse said the city had seen two such attacks this year, both of which were fatal. New York police this week reported seven instances of the “knockout game” in recent weeks.

Some media organizations have compiled dozens of examples of the game in recent years, and a St. Louis judge recently suggested that one man had attacked unsuspecting pedestrians 300 times.

“We’re trying to determine whether or not this is a real phenomenon,” New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said on Friday. “I mean, yes, something like this can happen. But we would like to have people come forward and give us any information they have.”

Given the extent to which such racialized attacks fit into broader societal stereotypes about young black men, police are treading carefully.

Moreover, fears of black mob violence against whites dovetails into broader political sentiments simmering in the US, where concerns are rising in some quarters about officials and media turning a blind eye to such attacks in order to not stir up racial trouble.

Moreover, the killing of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his shooter, George Zimmerman, resulted in a drawn-out debate over racial stereotypes, especially those involving young black men.

“There’s an element to who wants to see this through the lens of race,” Jeffrey Butts, a criminologist at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan, told the New York Times. He added that the appearance of black knockout game players triggers “racial alarms.”

Nevertheless, the new hate crime charges in the Brooklyn attack may be a turning point for police and prosecutors.

In the Brooklyn case, a 24-year-old Jewish man told police he overheard a group of black men talking about the knockout game before he was attacked. Police subsequently charged a man named Marajh Amrit with two counts of a hate crime and third degree assault. Police had first said the attackers were part of an inebriated birthday festivity.

Given that several of the victims in the New York attacks have been Jewish, the city’s Hate Crime Task Force is looking at filing more hate crime charges – if they can bring the perpetrators to justice.

After recent random attacks in Northeastern cities that played on racial fears, Al Sharpton and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter are imploring African Americans to reject the 'knockout game.'

Christian Science Monitor By Patrik Jonsson

November 26, 2013 5:25 PM

Whether or not the “knockout game” is surging in popularity, and whether or not it is motivated by race – there appear to be no hard data supporting either contention currently popular in the blogosphere – prominent black leaders are leaving nothing to chance and are denouncing the phenomenon.

What is clear is that the game exists, with recent reported instances in New York, Chicago, and elsewhere in the Northeast. Victims say it is played in a flash: A man approaches and suddenly throws a punch, followed by more. Nearby, his friends film the attack. When the beating is done, the group scatters, taking no items of value. Some such attacks have been fatal.

Sometimes the “knockout game” is referred to as “polar bear hunting,” a name that suggests the perpetrators are mostly black and the victims white, giving rise to the racial intensity of allegations that the attacks are spreading.

Yet the “knockout game” is already playing on racial fears and raising concern that bad behavior by a few will be used by some whites to reinforce stereotypes against broader swaths of the black community.

On Nov. 11, Philadelphian Mark Cumberland, who is white, reported being attacked by a group of black men. “There’s no reason at all,” he told CBS News. “I mean, I didn’t get robbed, they didn’t take nothing from me. They just beat me up.”

Last week New York police charged a man with a hate crime for beating up a Jewish man, while other police officials recounted several similar attacks, including one in Hoboken, that left victims dead.

“The proxy war for a host of racial agendas has a new rallying call,” writes columnist Will Wright on TheGrio.com

The phenomenon has become disturbing enough for black leaders to begin wrestling with its meaning, and fallout.

“If someone talked about knocking out blacks, we would not be silent,” MSNBC commentator Al Sharpton noted this weekend. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter addressed the issue on Monday, warning that city prosecutors will throw the book at anyone who plays the “knockout game.”

Responding to similar allegations of racialized violence and crime in the past, Mayor Nutter has put responsibility on black parents, a theme he sounded again on Monday.

“This is not a game. You can seriously injure or possibly kill someone,” Mr. Nutter said, addressing both black teenagers and their parents. “Your child’s life will be dramatically changed, and probably yours as well as a parent. So let’s cut out the nonsense. There are many other things that people can do to enjoy themselves. This is not one of them.”

To be sure, the knockout game, also called Knockout King, is hardly new, with researchers finding the first references to games involving cold-cocking random victims in 1895.

The lack of data conclusively tying the incidents to racism should preclude people from drawing inferences, Jeffrey Butts, a researcher at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told a New York radio station on Monday, “because that encourages you to think about this as a racial behavior” when it may be more about “the age of the perpetrators … [and] social class.”

At the same time, police acknowledge that there appears to be at least a loose, social-media-driven pattern to some of the attacks. Experts say the game in its current guise may have originated in St. Louis with a group called “The Knockout Kings.” A judge in that city said that one defendant may have been part of 300 such attacks over a period of years.

The game may be gang-related, as well. One “knockout game” suspect told a local ABC News station in Denver that members earn street cred by “beating up white dudes.” To that effect, the man said, the gang targeted inebriated white men leaving bars and nightclubs late at night.

Such specifics are causing some black commentators to put aside concerns about political correctness in order to address a phenomenon with strong racist overtones.

“We can’t blame the ‘Knockout Game’ on racism,” writes Michael Cottman on BlackAmericaWeb.com. “This has nothing to do with racial profiling. It has nothing to do with Republicans or the Tea Party. It has nothing to do with white supremacists. It has nothing to do with ‘stand your ground’ laws. This is about an evil that has taken hold of some of our young black men, our sons, our children, and we are fighting for their souls. … [black] America needs to take ownership of this problem – and figure it out – before it’s too late.”

Hamden High School student arrested for playing 'knockout game'

By Joseph Wenzel IV, News Editor

HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A Hamden High School student has become a victim of a brutal trend known as the "knockout game."

A male senior was walking in the halls of Hamden High School on Friday when police said a student "ran toward him and punched him under the eye."

Because of the assault, the senior suffered an eye injury. The victim's injuries are not life-threatening.

The senior told police that he did not know who had hit him and never talked with him. However, a short time later, the high school resource officer located the alleged suspect.

He told the high school resource officer "it's a game he and his friends play."

The 15-year-old student was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. He is expected to appear in juvenile court in New Haven on Dec. 9.

In the "Knockout Game," an unsuspecting person is attacked for no apparent reason. Police said that the suspects are not robbing the victims, with the most common being the elderly and women.

"Disgusting, I don't see the fun in it, or the point of it," said Susan Mappa, who is a mother of Hamden High School student.

Violent episodes are playing out randomly across the streets of America including six victims in New Haven.

"You wanna play the game, then you're going to pay for it," Mappa said.

I would not use the Daily beast as a fact source alone, you are free to do so.

While I know there has been one or two that have made claims that are a hoax,I don't believe all others, including police depts are lying about the events they describe.

I doubt had the photo's of the accused been white you would be saying it is the black folks trying to stir up racial hatred. Should they refuse to identify the accused because of the color of their skin?

A Manhattan chef who was brutally assaulted on a pre-Thanksgiving trip to Philadelphia may have been the latest victim of the “knockout game,” he told The Daily News Thursday.

Diego Moya, 30, described his Tuesday night attack in online exchanges with The News as his father drove him back to New York to celebrate Thanksgiving at home.

The slender, dark-haired culinary artist was unable to speak after a three-hour surgery a day earlier left his jaw wired shut. His attackers broke his nose in several places and fractured his jaw. The thugs left him — unconscious and bleeding — on a stoop around 11 p.m. Tuesday night in Old Town Philly, he said.

“I recall zero, was a few doors down from my hostel. Woke up on a stoop with blood on my hand,” he wrote The News.

Police told him they believe he was attacked by a group of six to eight men, ranging in age from 16 to 21.

He wasn’t robbed and nobody’s been able to find a motive for the random crime. That’s why police suspect it may have been a “knockout game” assault, Moya said.

“They mentioned it as a possibility,” he wrote, as his dad brought him home for a little TLC.

One of the alleged New York victims said he believes he was targeted because he’s an Orthodox Jew.

A recent report from New York's CBS 2 showed footage of a 46-year-old man from Hoboken, N.J., who apparently died after being struck by a blow to the head.

Participants would face a minimal charge of aggravated assault -- but possibly even third-degree murder if caught in an incident where someone was fatally injured, Nutter said.

Philadelphia police did not respond to calls for comment.

The knockout game is real. How wide spread is up for debate. I know of a kid whose brother was involved in gangs on the west coast of Michigan, and he told me, a couple of years ago, that that was one of the ways you were excepted into the gang. He did it and felt extremely bad about it afterward. He is a blond haired white kid.

I was raised in a mostly black neighborhood, beat downs are nothing new under the sun, the victims seem to be changing though.
