there buster Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Quote: god: "I'm god...I love you - now love me back and be good or I'll kill ya!" This is what's known as a false dichotomy. Those are not the only two alternatives. Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell
Robert Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Quote: Friend said: In fact, if you consider how many people likely inhabited the Earth before the great flood, God could quite possibly be the most prolific killer in the history of our world. “If God kills, lies, cheats, discriminates, and otherwise behaves in a manner that puts the Mafia to shame, that's okay, he's God. He can do whatever he wants. Anyone who adheres to this philosophy has had his sense of morality, decency, justice and humaneness warped beyond recognition by the very book that is supposedly preaching the opposite.” (Dennis McKinsey in newsletter Biblical Errancy) Quote
Derrell M Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Robert, it seems that a million people will read the Bible and a million religions will be the result. Everthing in theology is theory. Belief in any theology is founded in assumption. "Theological fact" is an oxymoron. We read the Old Testament and find a God who loves those who love him, and kills those who don't. We read the New Testament and find a God who loves everyone, turns the other cheek and doesn't tell his followers to kill anyone. We are told that they are the same person, and the Bible says that God never changes, he is the same forever. When you express theological questions in a manner that reflects a personal difference with other people's deeply held belief, they often respond in the manner of the OT God and attack you with a fury. Once in a blue moon you find one who is tolerant and kind. They gently express their view, explaining why they hold to it, but not demanding that you follow what they say. Nor do they try to intimidate, shame, or scare you into adhering to their views. These people are very rare, but they prove Nietzche wrong when he said, "The last Christian died on the cross." Quote
there buster Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 I'm sorry if you can't see that. Those are not the only two alternatives. "There you go again." That's not an answer. Nor is it accurate. You have attempted to force a choice between two alternatives. But the real choice includes more options. Just because you may not have thought of them doesn't mean they don't exist. You have this habit of telling people what their answers have to be. Even God doesn't attempt that. Quote “the slovenliness of our language makes it easier to have foolish thoughts.” George Orwell

Friend, I'm assuming you use the word we, with the presumption that all believers have drawn the same conclusions as yourself. While it is admitted many may have arrived at those conclusions, I find it difficult to believe that any that do believe that way, find the Scripture a guide for life. Usually it would be selecting the Scriptures that seem to verify their own ideas and don't admit to personal responsibility. Moderators lazarus Posted November 7, 2005 Author Moderators Posted November 7, 2005 Ok folks I'm going to settle for a baseball bat from Walmart. My main reason for buying it is to play baseball with my son. It might come in handy I guess in another setting. I just can't imagine JC with a HK MP5 or a 9mm unloadng a few rounds into guy (no matter how thuggish he may be). I guess its a bit simplistic but I like the way JC does things. I appreciate the words of wisdom. The idea of buying a gun appealed to the rambo, churck norris, harrison ford (In airforce one), michael douglas (in falling down) IN ME! The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence. Einstein
