Answer: Siegfried & Roy are a German-American duo of magicians and entertainers who became known for their appearances with white lions and white tigers. Siegfried Fischbacher joined Roy Horn to become the act Siegfried & Roy, putting on headlining Las Vegas shows for more than two decades. In October 2003, one of the show's tigers attacked Horn during a performance, leaving him in critical condition. Roy survived the attack but was partially paralyzed by it. Siegfried and Roy officially retired from show business after a final performance in 2010.

Which planet is closest to the sun?

MERCURY

Answer: Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun. As such, it circles the sun faster than all the other planets, which is why Romans named it after their swift-footed messenger god. Its orbit around the Sun is very elliptical, like a stretched out circle, compared to those of the other planets. Mercury's distance from the Sun ranges from 28.6 million miles to 43.4 million miles. Ironically, the planet closest to the sun is not the hottest planet; that honor is reserved for Venus.

CIVIL WAR

Answer: On this day in 1865, at Appomattox, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, effectively ending the American Civil War. Forced to abandon the Confederate capital of Richmond, blocked from joining the surviving Confederate force in North Carolina, and harassed constantly by Union cavalry, Lee had no other option. General Grant told his officers, “The war is over. The Rebels are our countrymen again.” Although scattered resistance continued for several weeks, for all practical purposes the Civil War had come to an end.

Who Was the First Woman in Space?

If you answered Sally Ride, sorry to say that's incorrect. While Sally was the first American female astronaut to leave our atmosphere, she was not the first in the world. That prestigious title belongs to Valentina Tereshkova, a Russian "cosmonaut" (the Russian name for astronauts) who spent 71 hours in space in 1964. Just as Russia beat us to the punch with launching Sputnik in 1957, the USSR won this "space race," too. Sally Ride didn't take off on Challenger until 1983—a whopping 19 years after Tereshkova orbited Earth 48 times.

Who Were the Oldest and Youngest NASA Astronauts to Go to Space?

Sally Ride was not only the first American woman in space—but she's also the youngest astronaut to go to space in NASA's history. While Russian cosmonaut, Gherman Titov, is technically the youngest person to ever leave our atmosphere (he was 25 when he became the second person ever to orbit Earth in 1961), Ride's voyage at the age of 32 aboard space shuttle Challenger made history in more ways than one. When it comes to the oldest astronaut, that title unequivocally goes to a former member of the "Mercury 7," John Glenn. In 1998, after a successful career as an astronaut-turned-Ohio-senator, Glenn became the oldest person in the world to go to space at 77 years-old.

Technically, the answer is fruit flies. In 1947, US scientists launched a V-2 rocket 68 miles into the atmosphere to test the effects of radiation exposure at high altitudes (the fruit flies survived). Even though this was technically a "space" mission, the first animal to actually orbit Earth was a Russian dog named Laika. Laika was aboard Sputnik 2 when it launched in 1957. Unfortunately, the pup died during the flight. Since then, monkeys, dogs, cats, chimpanzees, mice, rats, frogs, spiders, and even a tortoise have made it aboard a spacecraft.

Who Was the First "Space Tourist"?

With less than a century of space travel under our belts and a continued high-risk of mission failure, it's hard to believe there's such a thing as "space tourism." But, the truth is, if you have enough money, you can follow in the footsteps of Dennis Tito—an American businessman who in 2001, became the first person to pay his own way aboard the International Space Station. Tito spent a reported $20 million to enjoy a six-day vacation with the most "out-of-this-world" views you could possibly imagine.

Answer: It may surprise you that the Confederacy actually had three capitals during the war. The first was in the heart of the deep South in Montgomery, Alabama, lasting only four months. On May 8, 1861, the decision was made to name the Richmond, Virginia as the new Capital of the Confederacy. Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America for the vast majority of the Civil War. The last capital of the Confederacy was Danville, Virginia which lasted a whopping seven days. Richmond, obviously, held on to the title the longest.

Answer: Pete Best is a British musician, principally known as the original drummer in The Beatles. Best was invited to join The Beatles on August 12, 1960, on the eve of the group's first Hamburg season of club dates. Although many claim that his good looks and popularity were to blame, John Lennon attributed the ousting of the artist to his drumming skills which according to him, was neither skillful nor extensive. He was eventually replaced by Ringo Starr on August 16 1962, when The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, dismissed Best under the direction of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison.

Answer: Ambrose Burnside is best known for his leadership as a major general of the Union army in the Civil War and for originating the fashion of sideburns in the United States. After the war, Burnside was elected governor of Rhode Island, and he served three one-year terms. He then headed to Washington to represent Rhode Island in the U.S. Senate. Burnside would serve in Congress until his death in 1881. Beyond his battlefield exploits, Ambrose Burnside is remembered for his distinctive facial hair, a style now known as sideburns, which took its name from Burnside’s own last name. Why Did Confederate Troops Fire on the Fort?

South Carolina had seceded from the Union toward the end of 1860 because of Lincoln’s election as president and the Republicans stance against slavery. Following South Carolina’s secession, Confederate troops began seizing strategic locations within the state, including arsenals and forts. Fort Sumter, which stood in the middle of the harbor and was unfinished, posed a threat because President Lincoln announced his intention to resupply it.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Long Did the Battle Last?

It went on for 34 hours with both sides firing artillery shells at each other. Eventually, the commander of the fort, Major Robert Anderson, surrendered along with the 86 Union soldiers stationed there. The Confederates took control of the fort and held it for almost four years until Union General William Sherman captured the city of Charleston in 1965.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

Why Did Major Anderson Surrender the Fort?

The governor of South Carolina, Francis Pickens, had been blockading ships from delivering goods to Fort Sumter since January, firing on them to force them to retreat. The governor demanded that Major Anderson surrender on January 11 and ended up allowing 45 children and women to evacuate the fort because of food shortages. Anderson was eventually notified that food and other supplies would arrive by ship in mid-April. Emissaries sent by Beauregard on April 11 came back with a promise from Anderson that the fort would surrender on April 15. However, Anderson hoped that supplies would reach the fort before then, but the supplies never arrived.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

What Happened After the Shelling on Fort Sumter?

On April 15, President Lincoln, believing that the war would be short-lived, called up 75,000 soldiers as volunteers to put down the insurrection and called on Congress to meet in a special session on July 4. Shortly afterward, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina seceded from the Union. On April 19, Lincoln called for a blockade of Southern ports, which was in effect for the war’s duration. During a special session of Congress on July 4, the Senate and House of Representatives authorized calling up 500,000 men to combat the Southern insurrection.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Many Soldiers Died During the Battle?

There were no casualties caused by the firing on Fort Sumter by Southern troops. That’s right, not a single person died during battle at Fort Sumter. However, as part of the surrender, Anderson fired a salute of 100 guns while the American flag was lowered. One gun fired prematurely and killed two privates. The remaining men at the fort who surrendered were transported to relief ships waiting for them.
