Paine died and was assigned a frustrating legacy at first. After the revolution, he had gone to England and then France, where his writings actually landed him in jail. He later headed back to the United States only to find that people no longer thought of him as the influential and inspiring revolutionary writer -- but as a mere troublemaker. That reputation followed him after his death until 1937, when -- of all things -- the "Times of London" labeled him as the "English Voltaire." That was enough to redeem his reputation. Thanks to an English newspaper, Paine is now remembered as one of the key figures in the fight for American independence from Britain.

Answer: On November 18, 1883, at high noon a standardized way of keeping time was instituted throughout North America. A few years later, a Canadian civil engineer, Sanford Fleming, spiced things up even more by developing the concept of different time zones. Florida happens to be the only state on the eastern seaboard to fall partially in the Central Time Zone. The eastern part of Florida falls in the Eastern Time Zone, while the western part of the Florida panhandle falls in the Central Time Zone.

Roosevelt wanted to keep the area in perfect shape so that people could continue to enjoy it. However, previous bills to make the area a national park were repeatedly defeated. Roosevelt noted that the Antiquities Act made it possible to create national monuments, similar to national parks but without all of the red tape that normally went along with creating a national park, which needed Congressional approval.

Roosevelt's declaration of the Grand Canyon as a national monument stemmed from his admiration of nature and his wish to preserve it. The Grand Canyon was so popular that, eventually, when planes were more common, aircraft pilots would frequently request routes over the canyon for the entertainment of the passengers. Unfortunately, in 1956, two planes were given permission to fly over the canyon at the same time, and their routes weren't compared or diverted for safety -- and they hit each other, crashing and killing all on board. As a result of the accident, the Federal Aviation Administration was created. So Roosevelt's desire for more people to see the Grand Canyon eventually led to the creation of one of the most influential and necessary government organizations.

Answer: Supai, which serves as the capital of Havasupai Indian Reservation, is the only place in the lower 48 states that can be accessed only by foot, mule, or helicopter. CBS knew they were playing with dynamite when the show launched. Archie Bunker was an offensive jerk, and he would be taking the place of all the vanilla and lovable fathers who had populated the airwaves up to that point. They aired a disclaimer before the first episode which basically said, "we don't actually believe all the offensive things Archie is saying, please don't hate us" and they even hired a team of extra operators to handle all the calls from upset viewers they might receive. Turns out no one really minded. Sure there were individuals here and there who were offended, but the vast majority of Americans loved the guy. The show even inspired a wave of "Archie Bunker for President" paraphernalia.

On the show, Edith Bunker was famously a terrible singer. But the woman who played her, Jean Stapleton, was anything but. The daughter of an opera singer, she appeared in musicals on Broadway throughout her career. She was also far smarter than Edith Bunker, though you figure she'd have to be. As for Carroll O'Connor, pretty much everyone who knew him agreed he was a sweet and sensitive guy, nothing like the jerk he played on T.V.

For a time, there was a chance that Norman Lear might do the unthinkable: Kill off Archie Bunker. Carroll O'Connor and the studio locked horns on a contract dispute in 1974, and CBS filmed several episodes without their star. They decided that if push came to shove, Stretch Cunningham could become the new star of the show and move into the house to help the family grieve once their patriarch died. O'Connor eventually came back and it was Stretch who was killed off a couple seasons later. Was the studio serious, or were they just bluffing? We don't know, but man is it tough to imagine the series without Archie Bunker.
