William Howard Taft George Washington Harry S. Truman Gerald Ford How about GW?? Answer: William Howard Taft, the 27th president of the United States, fulfilled a lifelong dream when he was appointed chief justice of the Supreme Court, becoming the only person to have served as both a U.S. chief justice and president. In 1925, Chief Justice William Howard Taft swore in President Calvin Coolidge, 12 years after Taft himself had served as the nation's 27th President. Along with all of his "firsts," Taft was the last American president to have facial hair. Barack Obama George W. Bush Bill Clinton Gerald Ford Barack Obama Answer: In 2009, Barack Obama retook the oath of office a day after becoming President because Chief Justice John Roberts said the word "faithfully" out of sequence while administering the oath during the inauguration ceremony. Obama paused and smiled, seemingly aware of the mistake. He then retook the oath the following day out of an "abundance of caution." The move was aimed at erasing any questions that Obama wasn't officially the President due to the mistake. The second oath ceremony took place on the evening of January 21, 2009 at the White House before a small audience. Members phkrause Posted January 21, 2017 Author Members Posted January 21, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Happened to Cause the Hostage Crisis? The Pahlavi family had ruled in Iran since 1925; however, the rise of Islam in the country, along with the Shah's support for westernization and charges of corruption and activities by the secret police, doomed his rule to failure. Dissatisfaction, especially among students, the Shi?ite clergy and merchants, led to increased support for Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, an exiled religious leader who was living in Paris. Rioting and the fall of four major cities in the country caused the Shah to leave, and the Ayatollah to take control of the country. The Shah traveled to several different countries, then traveled to the United States to seek treatment for cancer. Students took over the American Embassy in Tehran about two weeks later, with a demand that the Shah be extradited back to Iran. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Were All The Hostages Released at the Same Time? Refusing to negotiate, Ayatollah Khomeini released some hostages two weeks later, which included women, minorities who were American and those of other nationalities. The 52 hostages that remained were held for an additional 14 months. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Was a Rescue Mission Sent to Free the Hostages? On April 11, 1980, an attempted rescue mission, carrying an assault force of 118 to recover the hostages, was approved by President Jimmy Carter after diplomatic efforts failed. At this point, the hostages had been held for about six months. Eight helicopters and six transport planes were sent in the rescue mission called Operation Eagle Claw. When three of the helicopters slated for the mission had to be withdrawn, two to mechanical problems and the other due to a hydraulic problem, the mission was canceled. However, while the helicopters were being withdrawn, one of them collided with one of the C-130s, resulting in the deaths of eight soldiers and injury to five others. President Carter took responsibility for the accident. Following the failed rescue attempt, the hostages were removed to remote locations. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: When Were the Remaining Hostages Released? In July 1980, one of the hostages, who had multiple sclerosis, was released by the Irani government. By September, the Irani government decided the situation had gone on too long, and sanctions were causing problems with the economy. Just minutes after Ronald Reagan was sworn in as the new president, the hostages were released with the help of mediaries from Algeria. At the same time, about $8 million in assets was released back to Iran. Former President Carter, on behalf of the new president, flew to Germany to welcome the captives back. The return of the hostages was celebrated by Americans for an entire week, including a New York ticker-tape parade and White House reception, while welcome home signs and yellow ribbons were displayed and church bells were rung across the country. John Quincy Adams Calvin Coolidge George W. Bush Franklin D. Roosevelt John Quincy Adams is my guess Answer: Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th U.S. President by his own father – one of those quirks of history not likely to be repeated. He took office on August 3, 1923, following the sudden death of President Warren G. Harding. Vice President Coolidge was in Vermont visiting his family home, which had neither electricity nor a telephone, when a messenger brought word of Harding’s death. His father, a notary public, administered the oath of office in his family's parlor by the light of a kerosene lamp. You're Hired The Art of the Deal Think and Grow Rich The Power of Positive Thinking Answer: The Art of the Deal is a 1987 book credited to businessman and current President of the United States Donald Trump and journalist Tony Schwartz. Part memoir and part business-advice book, it reached number 1 on The New York Times Best Seller list, stayed there for 13 weeks, and altogether held a position on the list for 48 weeks. It was the first book published by Trump and helped to make him a "household name". He cited it as one of his proudest accomplishments and his second-favorite book after the Bible. Members phkrause Posted January 22, 2017 Author Members Posted January 22, 2017 On 1/21/2017 at 2:45 PM, phkrause said: Where Were the Inaugural Concorde Flights Headed? The Air France Concorde, which departed from Charles de Gaulle Airport, was headed to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil with a scheduled stop at Dakar, Senegal, on Africa's west coast. Taking off from Heathrow was a British Airways flight bound for Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. Captaining the Air France flight was Pierre Chanoine, who landed the Concorde in Dakar less than three hours after departing Paris. On subsonic jets, the flight usually takes about six hours. Including the one hour and 18 minutes spent on the ground in Dakar, the total flight time from Paris to Rio was seven hours and 26 minutes. Captain Norman Todd piloted the British Airways Concorde flight to Bahrain. On 1/21/2017 at 2:45 PM, phkrause said: Didn't the U.S. Have an Entry in the Supersonic Jet Race? Despite years of research and development and a pledge by President John F. Kennedy to take the United States into the era of supersonic transportation, the American program never really got off the ground. As far back as the early 1950s, Boeing engineers and designers had looked at the challenge of building a supersonic jet aircraft. This eventually culminated in a design for the Boeing 2707, an aircraft that would have been both larger and faster than the Concorde. However, the American program to introduce an SST was eventually derailed by environmental concerns, including depletion of the ozone layer due to high-altitude flights and sonic booms, which were clearly the most widely heard complaint. On 1/21/2017 at 2:45 PM, phkrause said: How Fast Did the Concorde Fly? The Concorde established an average cruise speed that was just over two times the speed of sound, or Mach 2.02. This is equivalent to 1,334 miles per hour. A British Airways Concorde flying from JFK in New York to London's Heathrow Airport made the 3,441-mile flight in a record time of two hours and 52 minutes, 59 seconds on February 7, 1996. Earlier, in November 1986, another British Airways Concorde flew around the world -- a journey of 28,238 miles -- in 29 hours and 59 minutes. On 1/21/2017 at 2:45 PM, phkrause said: Did the Soviet Union Fly an SST? In addition to the successful Anglo-Franco partnership on the Concorde and the ill-fated SST program of the United States, the third international competitor in the supersonic transport arena was the Soviet Union. Its efforts resulted in the development of the Tupolev Tu-144, which had considerably less success than the Concorde. The Tu-144 flew only 55 passenger flights before being withdrawn from passenger service. On 1/21/2017 at 2:45 PM, phkrause said: Why Was the Concorde Withdrawn from Service? The Concorde aircraft flown by Air France and British Airways enjoyed an enviable safety record for more than 20 years. However, on July 25, 2000, an Air France Concorde taking off from De Gaulle Airport in Paris struck a piece of debris on the runway, which burst one of the jet's tires. Part of the tire flew up and hit a wing, puncturing a fuel tank under the landing gear. The jet's pilots lost control of the aircraft as a result of the ensuing fire, and the Concorde crashed into a hotel, killing all on board the flight and four on the ground. This tragic accident proved to be the beginning of the end for the Concorde, which was withdrawn from service by both Air France and British Airways in November 2003. Answer: Stonewall Jackson was born in Clarksburg (then Virginia), West Virginia, on January 21, 1824. A skilled military tactician, he served as a Confederate general under Robert E. Lee in the American Civil War. On May 2, 1863, Jackson was accidentally shot by friendly fire at the Battle of Chancellorsville. The general survived but lost an arm to amputation; he died of complications eight days later, at the age of 39. Military historians consider Jackson to be one of the most gifted tactical commanders in U.S. history. Members phkrause Posted January 23, 2017 Author Members Posted January 23, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Main Support for the Court's Affirmation of the Right to Obtain an Abortion? While the Supreme Court did discuss personhood (or lack thereof) of a fetus and other issues that were directly related to the abortion procedure and pregnancy, the ultimate decision was based on the woman's right to privacy, which was protected by the Fourteenth Amendment. Basically, this was a decision that was no one's business except for the woman in question and her doctor. Therefore, states couldn't tell women whether or not they were allowed to get abortions because that was pretty much the same as sticking their noses into private business. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Case Was Just as Important but Usually Overshadowed by Roe v. Wade? Roe v. Wade was not the only abortion case decided by the Supreme Court on January 22. The court also ruled in the case of Doe v. Bolton, in which the court said that attempts to prevent or restrict abortion access violated the rights of both women and their doctors. In other words, women had the right to health care, doctors had the right to practice, that included abortions, and attempts to restrict abortion access interfered with these rights. You don't hear about Doe v. Bolton much, but it was as crucial a ruling as Roe v. Wade. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Roe v. Wade Was a Culmination of What? Roe and Doe didn't come out of nowhere. Abortion had been restricted or outlawed in most states for decades, but movements to make abortion legal gained steam in the 1950s. And in the 1960s, individual states began loosening their laws. Some even made abortion legal well before Roe, including Hawaii, Washington state, Alaska, and New York. Roe and Doe themselves were the cases that happened to spread the legal abortion movement nationwide. Interestingly enough, abortion was legal in the United States before the 1820s, when individual states started adding laws to make it illegal. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Roe v. Wade Not Do? Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton made abortion access legal in all 50 states, but these cases did not make abortion access easy. Several states have enacted restrictions on access that were not considered violations of rights because they didn't prevent women from eventually obtaining abortions, such as waiting periods, even though restrictions such as these could have effects that made it harder to obtain abortions, such as forcing women to spend more time and money on a long-distance trip in areas where there weren't many abortion providers. States have tried to enact other restrictions that were later overturned because the restrictions either violated the rights affirmed by Roe and Doe, or because they placed an undue burden on women.
