Rolex Timex Seiko Swatch I remember seeing that commercial! For the life of me, I can't remember which company. I'm gonna guess Timex!! Answer: Timex is a watch company with roots that date back to 1854 and the Waterbury Clock Company. To date, Timex has sold over one billion watches. But it was in the 1950s that the brand established itself, with its celebrity-assisted, “torture test” advertising, using the famous line, “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.” They showed Timex watches being subject to various kinds of “torture tests” to demonstrate their durability, shock resistance, and superior waterproofing. By the end of the 1950s, one out of every three watches bought in the U.S. was a Timex. Members phkrause Posted January 30, 2017 Author Members Posted January 30, 2017 14 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did McKinley's Presidency Change the Relationship Between Media and the White House? Newspapers and the press obviously existed before McKinley's campaigns and presidency, but McKinley grabbed burgeoning technology and ran with it. His administration issued news summaries to the press and used a record player to record comments during his campaign, something that had not been done before. His inauguration in 1897 was the first to be recorded both on film and on a gramophone record. Most importantly, his administration was the first to really involve the press in his administration, setting up an office for them and managing the information that flowed to and through them. No longer were members of the press treated like foes -- McKinley was very aware of how reporting could be used to help keep the American public informed of what the president was doing. When McKinley and his wife set off on their historic cross-country train tour, the president was accompanied by an entourage of stenographers, telegraph and cable technicians, and several reporters from newspapers and magazines. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did McKinley Really Feel About Cars? While Henry Ford and Bertha Benz are often mentioned as literal trailblazers in the auto industry, the Stanley Brothers were just as important. Francis and Freelan Stanley ran the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, which manufactured the Stanley Steamer automobile. This had a steam-powered engine and was barely in use during McKinley's presidency. The brothers offered McKinley a ride in a Steamer, hoping to build up a positive image for the car. McKinley accepted cautiously -- he wasn't sure about the safety of the horseless carriage -- but reports say he was overall not happy with the car ride. He was apparently convinced that the car would be blown off course or that the driver would somehow lose control. McKinley did not add automobiles to his administration's transportation options. However, his successor, Theodore Roosevelt, was a little more comfortable with cars (albeit unimpressed) and took the first public car ride in 1902. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did McKinley Change the Face of the United States? McKinley's administration was involved in the Spanish-American War, which began in 1898. Within four months, the United States had wrested away from Spain control of Guam, the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, expanding U.S. territorial holdings substantially. McKinley also annexed Hawaii in 1898. 14 hours ago, phkrause said: What Two Non-Policy Influences Did McKinley Have After His Death? McKinley had a solid influence on presidential press relations and American expansion overseas, and he also had some non-political influences that have left a lasting (if not always good) impression. A good influence involved carnations. McKinley took to wearing a scarlet carnation after his 1876 election to the U.S. House of Representatives. The carnation kind of became his symbol, even though he was copying his opponent from that election. In 1904, his home state of Ohio made the scarlet carnation the state's official flower. Another influence was on the renaming of Denali, the highest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley. McKinley himself had nothing to do with this; it was one of his supporters who decided to simply start calling the peak Mount McKinley, just because. The name wasn't officially enshrined on maps until 1917, well after McKinley's death. This was a controversial change, though, because people who actually lived in Alaska didn't really call it Mount McKinley, and in fact, many people in Alaska wanted it changed back to Denali. After about four decades of attempts, Mount McKinley was officially renamed Denali in 2015. Answer: The Treasury minted several versions of the $500 bill, featuring a portrait of President William McKinley on the front. The last $500 bill rolled off the presses in 1945, and was formally discontinued 24 years later in 1969. Most $500 notes in circulation today are in the hands of dealers and collectors. That being said, should you come into possession of a $500 bill, you'd find that its market value far exceeds its face value, with even worn $500 bills commanding upward of a 40% premium on the open market. Southwick was a dentist and inventor from Buffalo, New York. He is credited with inventing the first electric chair as a method of legal execution. The idea of using electric current as a method of execution was developed by Southwick after he witnessed an intoxicated man die after having touched an exposed terminal on a live generator. Given that the man died so quickly, Southwick concluded that electricity could be used as an alternative to hanging for executions. As Southwick was a dentist who was accustomed to performing procedures on subjects in chairs, his device for electrical execution appeared in the form of an "electric chair." Members phkrause Posted February 1, 2017 Author Members Posted February 1, 2017 On 1/30/2017 at 0:45 PM, phkrause said: Who shot and killed Mahatma Gandhi? The lone gunman who shot and killed Gandhi was 37-year-old Nathuram Vinayak Godse, who had been involved with Hindu nationalist organizations for much of his adult life. These Hindu organizations were arrayed against the separatist policies of the All India Muslim League. Although Godse was alone when he shot Gandhi, he is believed to have conspired with Narayan Apte and six others on the assassination plot. Although Godse was originally supportive of Gandhi's civil disobedience campaigns against India's British colonial rulers, he grew disenchanted with Gandhi's continuing insistence on nonviolence, even in the face of Muslim attacks directed at Hindus. Godse felt that Gandhi's nonviolent approach to this bitter conflict essentially left Hindus unable to defend themselves. On 1/30/2017 at 0:45 PM, phkrause said: What was Mahatma Gandhi's First Occupation? Gandhi didn't start out to be the "Father of the Nation" as many in India call him. He was actually planning to follow in his father's footsteps and become a diwan, or finance official, in India. A friend advised him to go to London and qualify to be a barrister, which would give him the best chance of taking over the position from his father and uncle. He studied law in London at the Inner Temple and qualified as a barrister in 1891. Unfortunately, he had trouble cross-examining witnesses due to the psychological force that was required and began doing non-trial work exclusively. On 1/30/2017 at 0:45 PM, phkrause said: What Unusual Fact Did the Board Game Trivial Pursuit Get Wrong about Gandhi? It was commonly reported that when Gandhi spoke English, he did so with a noticeable Irish accent. The justification for this was that one of his very first teachers was Irish. This fact was even published as part of the Parker Brothers/Hasbro board game Trivial Pursuit. However, this is not true. There are many audio recordings of Gandhi speaking English and all of them have him speaking with an Indian accent. In fact, Gandhi's first real practice at speaking English was during his time studying law in London, so if anything, he would have a British accent when he spoke English. On 1/30/2017 at 0:45 PM, phkrause said: What Notable Award was Gandhi Nominated for Multiple Times but Never Received? Gandhi has received a lot of recognition, some of it before his death and much of it after. He was named Time Magazine's "Man of the Year" in 1930 and placed second (to Albert Einstein) for "Person of the Century" in 1999 by the same publication. However, although Mahatma Gandhi was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five different times and shortlisted in both 1937 and 1947, he was never given the honor. The Nobel Peace Prize is never awarded posthumously, so in 1948, the year that Gandhi was assassinated, the committee chose not to award the prize to anyone because there was "no suitable living candidate." Since then, the committee has come forward saying that they regret not giving the prize to Gandhi to this day, attributing the failure to divided opinions on political issues at the same. Monty Hall Bob Barker Richard Dawson Art Fleming Answer: At the end of every Price Is Right episode, longtime game show host Bob Barker burned these words into viewers’ minds: “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” When his wife Dorothy Jo died, Barker became an advocate for animal rights and of animal-rights activism. As for Barker’s signature line on TV, it didn’t stop when the 88-year-old retired in 2007. Since then, host Drew Carey has faithfully delivered the plea morning after morning at the end of every show. The Dow suffered its worst point decline after the House defeated a $700 billion bailout package that was backed by the Bush administration and meant to shore up the nation’s financial system. Percentage-wise, the 6.98% drop was less painful than the largest-ever percentage loss of 22.6% which occurred on Oct. 19, 1987, earning it the dark title "Black Monday." Members phkrause Posted February 1, 2017 Author Members Posted February 1, 2017 16 hours ago, phkrause said: What Record Did McDonald's Set on Opening Day? The Pushkin Square McDonald's was unbelievably busy on its first day. People lined up for hours just to try some of the food, and the restaurant served over 30,000 people, which was a record for the company. The line stretched literally around the block. Despite McDonald's opening many, many more locations over the years, the Pushkin Square location remains the world's busiest. There was one milestone the location didn't make, however; it wasn't the first in a communist country. That honor goes to the location in Slavija Square in Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: What Surprised Many Russians When They Visited McDonald's for the First Time? While it's not possible to accurately say what everyone in line was thinking, one western journalist noted that people seemed to be surprised not by the food but by the fact that the workers were polite. Communist countries, especially the Soviet Union, weren't known for their customer service. However, McDonald's changed that by having smiling, polite workers helping everyone. Overall, Russians liked the food and service tremendously. It isn't unusual to hear of someone holding a wedding reception at a McDonald's nowadays. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: What Are Some of the Regional Specialties Served at the Moscow McDonald's That Aren't Served in the United States? McDonald's is known for tweaking its menu to include foods that locals like, and these foods might not be available in the United States. Russia is no different; Muscovites get to enjoy fried McShrimps and Brie Nuggets. Anyone visiting Moscow and longing for fried shrimp or breaded cheese sticks will enjoy these. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: How Has McDonald's Mirrored Relations Between Russia and the United States? When the restaurant first opened, it was seen as a metaphor for Russia opening up to the West after years of being closed off behind the Iron Curtain. As the relations between the two countries improved, more and more locations opened. However, as relations between the two countries became chillier a few years ago, McDonald's has come under scrutiny. In 2014, four locations including Pushkin Square were closed for 90 days --they did re-open -- due to what the Russians said were safety complaints by customers. However, the closures and subsequent inspections of several other locations were seen as a political nose-thumbing toward the United States.
