Which chocolatier is credited with the idea of gifting chocolate on Valentine's Day?

Answer: The tradition of gifting chocolate on Valentine's Day began with a dedicated marketing campaign by Richard Cadbury. Richard Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder John Cadbury, created the first heart-shaped box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day. A marketing genius, Cadbury began putting Cupids and rosebuds on heart-shaped boxes in 1861. Thus, began the common link between chocolate and Valentine’s Day. A new tradition had begun. Each year, over 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolates are sold around the world.

Which invention was submitted for a patent on Valentine’s Day of 1876?

Answer: Alexander Graham Bell’s wife had Valentine’s Day all to herself in 1876, as her husband spent the day filing his patent for the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by only two hours. On March 7, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell received a patent for the telephone; three days later, he and associate Thomas Watson successfully tested their invention. Elisha Gray, Antonio Meucci and Thomas Edison all claimed to have invented the telephone first, and the issue is still a source of controversy.

Which St. Valentine is Valentine's Day Celebrating?

There's a lot about the St. Valentine's Day holiday that historians are pretty foggy on, including, you know, who the heck was St. Valentine. There were a whopping 14 saints named Valentin or Valentine, and two of them died on February 14th.

Generally, people seem to agree that Valentine's Day is probably celebrating one of two guys: Either a Roman priest who died around 269 AD or a Bishop Valentine of Terni who died around 197. Though there's a chance it's a third guy.

You might be tempted to think that the saint being celebrated is the one with connections to romance, but there's a problem with that. None of them match that description, the story of a St. Valentine performing secret marriages is almost definitely myth, and the holiday had nothing to do with love for the first thousand or so years it was celebrated. In other words, everything you know about Valentine's Day is a lie.

Sorry.

About How Many Couples Will Get Engaged on Valentine’s Day?

It makes perfect sense that Valentine’s Day, a time for love, would play host to a ton of marriage proposals — six million a year, to be exact. And while we don’t have figures to support this, we’re guessing that just under 100% of Valentine’s Day proposals end with an enthusiastic “yes.” There aren’t too many women out there who would turn down marriage on the most romantic day of the year. At least, we hope there aren’t.

In What Asian Country Do They Celebrate Love on the 14th of Every Month?

Guys, if you get overwhelmed having to remember Valentine's Day once a year, then you would not make it in South Korea. Over there, the 14th of every month is a day devoted to celebrating your lover. Though we should say that on February 14th in particular, men have it a bit easier there than they do here. February 14th in South Korea is the day girls buy chocolate for the guys.

Fill in the Blank: Every Year, The Bronx Zoo Runs a Promotion Wherein You Can Name a _______ After Your Loved One.

For just $10, the Bronx Zoo lets you name a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach after your loved one! We know, we couldn't believe how cheap the price was when we saw the deal either.

Their slogan accompanying the campaign is "Chocolate melts, flowers wilt, but roaches are forever." And, well, we never thought of it that way. The zoo's website does acknowledge that you might feel a bit more comfortable naming the roach after an ex or your mother-in-law, but should you choose to give your current lover the honor, at least you'll have company. Plenty of people have signed up for the service, including John Calvelli, the Wildlife Conservation Society's executive vice president of public affairs. "I will be the first to say I made the mistake of purchasing one for my wife, and it did take a little bit of explaining," Calvelli said in an interview with Today. "But after I explained, she put a big smile on her face, and it gave us a chance to communicate. And what better way to do it than with a roach?"

So we guess it's true what they say: Love takes many different forms.

"Remember the Maine!" was the rally cry for which war?

Answer: The battleship USS Maine is best known for her catastrophic loss in Havana Harbor on the evening of February 15, 1898 (119 years ago today). Sent to protect U.S. interests during the Cuban revolt against Spain, she exploded suddenly without warning and sank quickly, killing nearly three quarters of her crew. Popular opinion in the U.S blamed Spain. The phrase "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" became a rallying cry for action, which came with the Spanish–American War later that year.

When Was The USS Maine Commissioned?

The Maine was ordered built in 1886 and commissioned in 1895, the first ship to be named after that state. Built in the New York Naval Shipyard, in Brooklyn, the Maine was an armored cruiser built in part as a reaction to the expansion of navies in South American waters. It had a ship that was almost a sister, the Texas, commissioned and built at roughly the same time.

The Maine's lengthy construction was in part due to its armor plating, which took up three years of its nine-year construction period. In the intervening years, the Maine became out of date in terms of naval technology.

At 324 feet 4 inches long, with a 57-foot beam and a maximum draft of 22 feet 6 inches, the Maine was between battleships and cruisers and was essentially a battleship in miniature. Powered by steam, the Maine found itself falling between two needs with the Navy.

When Did The Maine Launch?

The Maine officially launched November 18, 1889. Officially given a commission September 17, 1895, the Maine joined the North Atlantic fleet for operations. It had a crew of 355, with 26 officers, 290 sailors, and 39 Marines.

The Maine's career over the next three years was largely unnotable, as very little war was happening on the nation's seas. Mostly the Maine's job was to demonstrate to the world, especially nearby nations such as Brazil, just how powerful and well-engineered American ships could be. But there had been problems in its building: The Bethlehem Steel Company, which was supposed to make its armor, wound up waiting three years for the proper equipment, and the Navy hired Homestead Steel Mill as a secondary contractor. The Homestead Strike of 1892 had delayed it further and the result was an out-of-date ship nobody really wanted.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in 1895, the Cuban War of Independence broke out. By 1898, it was clear that American interests in the area needed protection. The Maine steamed out from Key West to provide it.

When Did The Maine Explode?

At 9:40 pm, a massive blast was heard across Havana. Five tons of gunpowder stored in the forward part of the ship had detonated, obliterating a third of it. Worse, most of the crew was sleeping in the forward compartments as well, with many of the ships' crew killed instantly. Only 89 crew members, 18 of them officers, survived the blast and the ensuing sinking.

In later years, just what caused the blast became a point of dispute, but at the time, action was demanded. On March 21, the US Naval Court of Inquiry ruled that the blast had been caused by a mine. But the court of public opinion had already ruled. Fanned by newspapers and "yellow journalism," William Randolph Hearst posted a $50,000 bounty for anybody who brought those who destroyed the Maine to justice. The Spanish military was relentlessly blamed in the newspapers, and on April 21, 1898, the Spanish-American War began with the rallying cry "Remember The Maine!" By August 13, Spain surrendered, and the Maine arguably fulfilled its purpose, proving that America was a military force to be reckoned with.

Answer: Iconic designer Ralph Lauren was born Ralph Lifshitz in New York City on October 14, 1939. Lauren worked in retail at Brooks Brothers before developing a line of neckties. In 1967, while working for Beau Brummell, Ralph Lauren began designing his own men’s neckties with a wider cut, branding them under the name “Polo” and selling them at large department stores, including Bloomingdale’s. Lauren was able to more fully develop his business with a $30,000 loan, eventually expanding his designs to a full menswear line.

Why Was the Discovery Inside King Tut's Tomb Unusual?

Archaeologist Howard Carter opened the tomb of King Tutankhamen, accompanied by his financial backer, Lord Carnarvon. The four-room tomb was almost entirely intact, with treasures dating back more than 3,000 years. It is speculated that the tomb had been robbed several times, including the removal of perfumes and oils, but covered over by the tomb robbers.

It may have been obscured further during the construction of the tomb of Rameses VI by piles of debris. In addition, Tutankhamun's tomb was omitted from the Abydos kings list, a period when mummies of pharaohs were relocated to provide better protection for them. In 1907, archaeologist Theodore M. Davis discovered artifacts containing Tutankhamun's cartouche but mistook the tomb of Horemheb for that of Tutankhamun.

What Was Found Inside the Tomb?

About 3,000 objects were discovered in the tomb, many of them of gold or gilded and meant to help Tutankhamun in the afterlife. They included furniture, jewelry, musical instruments, golden and ostrich fans and games. Fifty linen garments were placed there for him to wear, consisting of tunics, gloves, kilts, headdresses and scarves. Food and 30 jars of wine were placed there for him to eat and drink. The most spectacular finds were the coffins in which the mummy lay. One was solid gold and held the famous gold death mask.

In addition, instruments for embalming and the canopic jars that held the king's internal organs were found. One find led archaeologists to speculate that Tutankhamun, although he was only 18 or 19 when he passed away, may have had problems walking. This is because there were 139 walking sticks found in the tomb. They were of ivory, gold, ebony and silver.

How Did Tutankhamun Die So Young?

There are several theories about the death of the young king. For some years, the theory was that Tutankhamun had suffered a fatal blow to the head and was perhaps murdered. However, experts concluded that the damage to the skull occurred sometime after death. A 2005 study showed that he had broken his leg, and an infection might have killed him. Another theory suggested that he fell from his chariot while hunting.  Meanwhile, DNA testing in 2010 suggested that Tutankhamen had malaria, which might have exacerbated a leg infection or caused him to fall in the first place. Alternate theories about King Tut’s demise still abound, however, including the hypothesis that he succumbed to the lethal bite of an enraged hippopotamus.

19 hours ago, phkrause said:

Was King Tut's Curse Real?

No curse was found inside the burial chamber, but speculation of a curse may have been started by novelist Marie Corelli. She speculated that dire punishment could follow an intruder who entered a sealed tomb. This statement was published in both a popular newspaper and magazine. Following this, George Herbert, Lord Carnarvon, died of blood poisoning caused by the bite of a mosquito. A study by the British Medical Journal studied the deaths of 25 people who were around at the time of the tomb opening. They found no association between the deaths and the opening of the tomb. Howard Carter himself died in 1939 at age 64 in London.
