"Fly Me to the Moon" "Space Cowboy" "Rocket Man" "Jingle Bells" Answer: "Jingle Bells" was the first song broadcast from space, in a Christmas-themed prank by Gemini 6 astronauts Tom Stafford and Wally Schirra. While in space on December 16, 1965, the astronauts played a prank by telling Mission Control that they spotted a flying object before broadcasting their own rendition of Jingle Bells. The sound of "Jingle Bells" was played on a smuggled harmonica and a handful of small bells. The Smithsonian Institution claims these were the first musical instruments played in space and keeps the instruments on display and a visual image is also posted on their website. Why Did He Change His Mind? When Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment, it became official. Women would be granted the right to vote. While suffragettes were celebrating in the streets, Harry Burn was hiding in the attic of the capitol, hoping the angry mob would disappear and let him go home safely. Burn had been opposed to the amendment, and if he had voted against it, as everyone expected he would, then the House of Representatives vote on the matter would have ended in a dead tie. He was the swing vote that gave women the vote. So what made him change his mind? Earlier that day he had received a letter from his mom, urging him to vote in favor of the 19th amendment. "I know that a mother's advice is always safest for her boy to follow," he said. Sounds like his mother gave good advice. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What State Was the Last to Ratify the 19th Amendment? Once that 36th state ratified the amendment, it had all the support it needed and soon became the law of the land. But other states still had the option of ratifying the amendment, and over the next few years, they all slowly did. And we emphasize the word slowly. It wasn't until May of 1971 that North Carolina finally ratified the amendment. But there was one state who took even longer: Mississippi finally approved the measure on March 22, 1984. Now that's a holdout. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: In What Year Was the 19th Amendment First Proposed? The 19th Amendment was not an easy one to pass, and it spent a lot of time getting rejected. The amendment was first proposed by Senator Arlen A. Sargent from California who did it in 1878. It was rejected. Then proposed the next year, then rejected. They kept re-proposing it every year for the next four decades. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: According to Susan B. Anthony, What Invention Did "More to Emancipate Women Than Anything Else in the World?" Granting women the right to vote required a shift in the way men (and other women) viewed women's place in the world. It required realizing that women were no longer the frail-bodied, subservient sex everyone made them out to be. And according to Susan B. Anthony (and plenty of other people), one invention did more than any other to change that perception: The bicycle. Women started bicycling to and from places, and the image of a woman on a bicycle was that of a strong, physical, independent women. Said Anthony, "It gives women a feeling of freedom and self-reliance. I stand and rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a wheel ... the picture of free, untrammeled womanhood." It also served as a form of exercise for women who previously weren't getting a lot of it, and it necessitated women lessening the absurd amount of undergarments they wore all the time. It both got women more physically active and created the perception that women were strong and independent. All of which made the idea of giving them the right to vote seem a little less radical. Lions Titans Eagles Falcons Eagles! Answer: The 101st Airborne Division, known as the "Screaming Eagles", is an elite modular specialized light infantry division of the United States Army trained for air assault operations. It is the most potent and the most tactically mobile of the U.S. Army's divisions. It has been referred to as "the tip of the spear.” During World War II, it was renowned for its role in Operation Overlord (the D-Day landings and airborne landings on June 6, 1944, in Normandy, France), and its action during the Battle of the Bulge around the city of Bastogne, Belgium. "Those Were the Days" "The Lonely Man" “Thank You For Being A Friend” "Suicide Is Painless" Answer: When it comes to TV theme songs, few are as famous as the title tune that graced the opening credits of the TV series M*A*S*H. "Suicide is Painless" was the theme song for both the movie and TV series. The song was written by Johnny Mandel. The lyrics were written by Mike Altman, the 14-year-old son of the film's director, Robert Altman. An instrumental version of the song was used as the theme for the TV series. The young Altman went on to make millions in royalties off the song, while his dad was paid just $70,000 for directing the film. Carlos Santana Keith Richards Bob Dylan Eric Clapton Eric of course Answer: Eric Clapton is an English guitarist, singer, and songwriter known by his nickname “Slowhand”. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. Whenever Clapton broke a guitar string during a concert, he would stay on stage and replace it. The English audiences would wait out the delay by doing what is called a "slow handclap". Clapton's nickname of 'Slowhand' came from Giorgio Gomelsky, a pun on the slow handclapping that ensued when Clapton stopped playing while he replaced a string. Members phkrause Posted March 1, 2017 Author Members Posted March 1, 2017 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Unusual About the Filming of the Final Episode? The last episode was filmed in the middle of the season's schedule and the final episode was the only one that had a title appear on the screen. Being filmed at the outdoor set at Fox Ranch near Malibu, California, it was originally scheduled as a 90-minute show. However, a fire broke out at the ranch, destroying most of the set. The solution was to increase the final show another 30 minutes, and incorporate the fire into the program. As a way to explain the devastation, the fire was attributed to enemy bombing and used as the reason the members of the 4077 bugged out. Since commercials for the show, which lasted 30 seconds, cost $450,000, the added time might have made additional money for the network. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Did the Final Show Actually Cause a Water Surge in New York? Although many urban legends turn out to be false, this one happens to be true. According to the ratings, this episode of M*A*S*H remains the most-watched television episode in television history with 105,970,000 viewers. The only programming with a higher number of viewers are seven of the Super Bowl games. Apparently, when the finale was over, so many people went to the bathroom afterward, it caused a pressure drop from all the toilets flushing at the same time. This resulted in a water surge all the way from the Catskills to New York. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Which Actor Played the Same Role in Both Film and TV Versions? The only major cast holdover from the motion picture version of M*A*S*H was Gary Burghoff, who played Walter Eugene "Radar" O'Reilly in both the film and TV versions. Burghoff left the series after its eighth season on the air. Other key characters and the actors who portrayed them in film and TV versions are as follows: The role of Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce, portrayed on film by Donald Sutherland, was immortalized on TV by Alan Alda. John Francis Xavier "Trapper John" McIntyre was played by Elliott Gould on film and by Wayne Rogers on TV. Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan was portrayed by Sally Kellerman on film and by Loretta Swit on TV. Robert Duvall brought the role of Major Frank Burns to life on the big screen, but the TV role went to Larry Linville. The role of Lieutenant Colonel Henry Braymore Blake was played by Roger Bowen on film and by McLean Stevenson on TV. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Were There Any Spin-Offs From the Show? Spin-offs of popular television shows are not unusual, and M*A*S*H was no exception. One spin-off was called After M*A*S*H and aired in 1983. It was meant as a sequel showing what happened to some of the television characters after they left Korea. Starring Harry Morgan as Colonel Potter, Jamie Farr as Klinger and William Christopher as Father Mulcahy, it was set in an American VA hospital. While it was renewed for a second year, its ratings fell because of the competition in that time slot from The A-Team and it was cancelled. Another spinoff, Trapper John, M.D. focused on Dr. "Trapper" John McIntyre (Pernell Roberts) 28 years after his discharge from the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. The show ran on CBS from September 23, 1979 to September 4, 1986. Roberts played the character more than twice as long as had Wayne Rogers (1972–75) in the TV series M*A*S*H. A state law that mandates people bathe at least once in 12 months is just one of many unusual statutes that are on the books. Another state law stated that "No female shall appear in a bathing suit on any highway within this state unless she be escorted by at least two officers or unless she be armed with a club." The law was later amended with: "The provisions of this statute shall not apply to females weighing less than 90 pounds nor exceeding 200 pounds, nor shall it apply to female horses." Members phkrause Posted March 3, 2017 Author Members Posted March 3, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Is it True That Yellowstone was Once a Supervolcano? A hotbed of geothermal activity, most of the sprawling national park lies within an area known to geologists as the Yellowstone Caldera, created when a supervolcano fell in upon itself after a cataclysmic eruption. Although the Yellowstone supervolcano has not erupted for hundreds of thousands of years, the park's many geothermal features are a reflection of the area's continuing volcanism. It is estimated by some that roughly one-half of all the world's geothermal features can be found within the borders of Yellowstone National Park. Among these geothermal features are geysers, such as the world-famous Old Faithful; hot springs, such as Mammoth Hot Springs; fumaroles; and mud pots. Because of the underlying volcanism that accounts for many of these features, the Yellowstone Caldera is earthquake-prone and last experienced a major earthquake in 1959. That quake measured between 7.3 and 7.5 on the Richter magnitude scale. Scores of earthquakes of lesser magnitude have been recorded in the years since 1959's so-called Hebgen Lake earthquake, which triggered a landslide that killed 28 people and caused $11 million in damages. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Is Old Faithful the Largest Geyser in Yellowstone? One of the national park's most popular attractions, Old Faithful is neither the biggest nor the most regular geyser in Yellowstone, but it is the biggest regular geyser, according to Yellowstone.net. Living up to its name, Old Faithful erupts every 35 to 120 minutes. Visitors to the geyser will find signs predicting the approximate time of the next eruption. Eruptions last from 1.5 to 5 minutes and send a steam-driven fountain of water anywhere from 90 to 180 feet in the air. Yellowstone's biggest geyser is known as Steamboat Geyser, and its eruptions are few and far between. But when they do occur, they are spectacular, sending a stream of water up to 300 feet in the air, and last anywhere from three to 40 minutes. As of this writing, the last eruption of Steamboat occurred on September 3, 2014, more than a year after its previous eruption on July 31, 2013. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Animals Make Their Home in Yellowstone? Yellowstone is one of the few places in America where one can still see vast herds of grazing animals, such as elk and bison. It is also one of the few places where visitors have a good chance to spot large predators, such as black and grizzly bears, gray wolves, and mountain lions. Other Yellowstone animal residents include bighorn sheep, bobcats, Canada lynx, coyotes, moose, mountain goats, mule and white-tailed deer, and numerous small mammals, such as beaver, ground squirrels, rabbits, river otters, and weasels. Yellowstone is also a paradise for birdwatchers, who can spot a wide array of species, including bald eagles, common loons, ospreys, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, and white pelicans. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who was the First Non-Native American to Visit Yellowstone? Although no one can be certain who was first, most sources give that credit to fur trader John Colter, who had earlier been a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Colter first visited the Yellowstone area during the winter of 1807-08. His description of the area's ¨hidden fires, smoking pits, noxious steams, and smell of brimstone¨ led others to refer to the area as ¨Colter's Hell.¨ Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.
