Which TV character often advised his wife to "Stifle yourself"?

Archie Bunker

Answer: Archie Bunker is a fictional character from the 1970s American television sitcom All in the Family, played by Carroll O'Connor. Bunker, a main character of the series, is a World War II veteran, reactionary conservative, blue-collar worker, and family man. Described as a "lovable bigot", he is bad-tempered and frequently tells his long-suffering wife Edith to "stifle yourself" and "dummy up". Series creator Norman Lear admitted that this is how his father treated Lear's mother.

Answer: Germany became the first country to introduce DST when clocks were turned ahead 1 hour on April 30, 1916. The rationale was to minimize the use of artificial lighting in order to save fuel for the war effort during World War I. The idea was quickly followed by the United Kingdom three weeks later. In the US, it was first introduced in 1918 when President Woodrow Wilson signed it into law to support the war effort during World War I. Daylight Saving Time is now in use in over 70 countries worldwide and affects over a billion people every year.

What Was the Reason for Roosevelt's First Speech Over the Radio?

Loss of confidence in the banking system had resulted in runs on banks, where depositors withdrew all their money. To meet the demand, some banks had to sell assets at low prices, which caused those banks to become insolvent. The first bank runs began in 1930, following the crash of the stock market in 1929, and continued into 1933. Roosevelt's talk over the radio was meant to explain to the American people what was going on in the banking industry and to raise confidence and build support for his policies. It was a reporter at CBS who termed these speeches fireside chats.

How Did Roosevelt Explain the Banking Crisis in the First Fireside Chat?

Eight days after Roosevelt took office, he gave his first fireside chat, which explained his reason for declaring a bank holiday. He used simple terms to explain that banks did not hold all of their depositors' money in vaults but invested the money through loans, mortgages and in other ways. Because of this, although a bank would keep enough money to pay the normal needs of depositors, it would not have enough on hand if all or most of the depositors insisted at the same time on withdrawing all of their funds. This, he explained, was the reason for a bank holiday nationwide. He explained that this respite would give the Federal Reserve Banks time to print new money, which would be sent out by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This would assure that banks would have the money to pay depositors.

How Many Fireside Chats Did FDR Give Throughout His Terms as President?

President Roosevelt gave a total of 30 fireside chats throughout the years, in addition to other speeches. Among the chats, he talked about the New Deal programs, designed to address the high unemployment rate and relieve poverty. He also spoke about his tour of nine states to see firsthand the devastation of the Dust Bowl and talked about how the drought and problems associated with it could be relieved.

Throughout World War II, he gave a number of fireside chats. Two days after the United States declared war on Japan, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he used a radio broadcast to explain to the American people the timeline of actions by Japan along with the timelines of Hitler and Mussolini. He told the American people that it would be a long, hard war but that it would be won. Roosevelt's last fireside chat was given June 12, 1944. He passed away April of the following year.

At the end of each broadcast, "The Star Spangled Banner" was played. Broadcasts were always timed to be presented in the evenings when people were normally finished with the evening meal and settling in to listen to radio programs.

Which two U.S. states do not observe Daylight Saving Time?

Answer: Most of the nation "sprang forward" and lost an hour of sleep in switching to daylight saving time. Arizona and Hawaii did not. Congress passed the Uniform Time Act in 1966 to standardize daylight saving time. But states could exempt themselves if they chose. All but two states currently observe DST, the exceptions being Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation, which does observe daylight saving time) and Hawaii. The overseas territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands also do not observe DST.

Answer: Katy Perry who joined the social network in 2009, holds the title as Twitter’s most-followed person with 96.2 million followers. The 31-year-old is undoubtedly one of the most popular singers of the last decade. As of Monday morning, Justin Bieber is No. 2 with 92.2 million followers, Barack Obama comes in third with 85.6 million, and Taylor Swift is No. 4 with 83.7 million. Celebs Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Ellen DeGeneres and Justin Timberlake, as well as Twitter and YouTube’s own account, make up the rest of the top 10.

Ha, I can't believe it, but the head honcho, didn't even crack the top 10????? He'll be very mad at that for sure!

What Was the Name of the Meat Packer from Troy, New York who Inspired the Nickname Uncle Sam?

While the cartoon character was first depicted in 1852, Uncle Sam's origin story traces back to the War of 1812 when a man named Sam Wilson used to supply barrels of meat to the United States army. He marked the barrels U.S. referring to, ya know, the country these soldiers were fighting for. But the soldiers liked to say it stood for Uncle Sam, the guy supplying all that food. After a newspaper story about the nickname, it started to spread. Sam Wilson is now buried in Troy, New York and they are quite proud of their native son. They call themselves "The Home of Uncle Sam."

The Cartoonist Who Popularized the Image of Uncle Sam Is Also Credited with Coming up with What Two Famous Political Symbols?

Thomas Nast was a political cartoonist who helped popularize the image of Uncle Sam, but that wasn't his only contribution to the world of political imagery. He also has the distinction of being the guy who depicted Democrats as donkeys and Republicans as elephants.

However, there is another feather in his cap which is probably more impressive than those other three combined. Many credit him with being the guy who first depicted Santa as a jolly fat man in a red suit. People also credit him with creating the idea that Santa lives in the north pole and that it would be worth kids' time to send their wish lists to him over there.

Okay But Who First Drew Uncle Sam Pointing His Finger Straight at Ya?

Most give the credit for creating that iconic Uncle Sam image in that iconic pose to James Montgomery Flagg. He drew the picture for a July 1916 cover of a magazine called Leslie's Weekly, with the words "What Are You Doing for Preparedness?" running underneath it. Flagg also gave Uncle Sam a bit of a makeover, including redoing the face. Not wanting to bother with hiring a model, he simply made it a self-portrait. So that guy you always see telling you he wants you? That's essentially Flagg himself.

The image worked. The government used it for World War I recruiting posters and enrollment soared. They continued to use the image with much success for quite a while though eventually they pulled back...

During What War Did the Government Phase Out Uncle Sam's Use on Recruitment Posters?

Uncle Sam represents the United States. And his saying he wants you represents a call to duty for all those proud patriots out there. So which was the war when he suddenly stopped being so effective? The war where people started being a little less proud of their country. During the Vietnam War, as people became a little more distrustful of government, his brazen Uncle Samness didn't quite work. The recruiting offices phased out their iconic image, but they didn't stop using him altogether. During the Gulf War he made a comeback and he's still out there, telling plenty of people how badly he wants them.

Whose firing led to the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson?

Answer: The impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson began in the U.S. Senate on this day in 1868. The primary charge against Johnson was the violation of the Tenure of Office Act, passed by Congress the previous year. Specifically, he had removed Edwin McMasters Stanton, the Secretary of War (whom the Tenure of Office Act was largely designed to protect), from office and attempted to replace him with Brevet Major General Lorenzo Thomas. This was the first impeachment of an incumbent President since creation of the office in 1789.

Answer: Conan O'Brien is a former writer for The Simpsons, writing episodes including "New Kid on the Block" and "Marge vs. the Monorail". He later became host of the talk show Late Night with Conan O'Brien before briefly hosting The Tonight Show. In a speech he gave at Harvard on Class Day in 2000, O'Brien credited The Simpsons with "saving" him, a reference to the career slump he was experiencing prior to his hiring for that show. He has also guest starred in the episode, "Bart Gets Famous", when Bart comes onto his late night show.

What Happened to Einstein's Brain after He Died?

When Einstein died, the autopsy was performed by a man named Thomas Harvey, and, well, apparently it's true what they say about people with two first names: You never can trust them. Harvey stole Einstein's brain and put it in formaldehyde, deciding that it was too important to not be researched. You probably won't be surprised to learn that Harvey lost his job. But you might be surprised to learn that NOBODY MADE HIM RETURN THE BRAIN HE HAD STOLEN. We can only conclude that there is a hole somewhere in the criminal justice system if brain theft is going unpunished.

Harvey would occasionally send off pieces of the brain to scientists for research, once even sending a portion in a mayonnaise jar. Harvey eventually gave the brain to the pathology department at Princeton University, only a few decades after first stealing it.

How Did Einstein Attempt to Solve the Problems He was Experiencing with His Wife, Mileva Maric?

When Einstein's first marriage hit a rough patch, he came up with an idea that really makes us wonder about this whole genius label he gets: He gave his wife a list of rules that would allow him to stay with her. The rules included making sure that his clothes and laundry were handled, that he got three meals a day served to him in his room and that his office was kept neat.

He asked her to forego, "my sitting at home with you" and "my going out or travelling with you," which would seem to cover most forms of interaction. And, of course, he stipulated "you will not expect any intimacy from me." There's more, but we think you get the point. Anyway, you're not going to believe this, but she took the kids and moved out a couple months later. We're surprised she lasted that long.

For What Did Albert Einstein Win the Nobel Prize?

In 1922, Albert Einstein received the Nobel Prize in Physics, seventeen years after discovering the theory of relativity. But that's not what he won for. The theory of relativity wasn't the only thing Einstein unlocked in 1905. That same year he helped scientists to better understand why light carried electricity, a discovery that decades later would prove pivotal in the development of solar panels. Despite his troubles with his then-ex-wife, she still received all the prize money from the award to help their family amidst illness and Germany's inflation problems.

Makeup artist Stuart Freeborn was the man in charge of designing the face of Yoda, from Star Wars. Like any good designer, he based the character in part on himself. But then he also pulled from another brilliant visionary: Albert Einstein.

It's kind of fitting that one of Earth's wisest men became the inspiration for one of the galaxy's wisest creatures.

???

Answer: On March 14, 1794, American inventor Eli Whitney was granted a patent for the cotton gin, a machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber. By the mid-19th century, cotton had become America’s leading export. Despite its success, the gin made little money for Whitney due to patent-infringement issues. Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin revolutionized the cotton industry in the United States.
