Alexander Hamilton Salmon P. Chase John D. Rockefeller John Hancock Answer: In 1862, the first one dollar bill was printed as a form of legal tender. The original one dollar bill, a United States Note, featured a portrait of Salmon P. Chase, the Secretary of the Treasury under President Abraham Lincoln. Many of the markings on the bill are similar to our dollars today, except the back features a lot more white space. These early bills were larger than our current ones at around 7 & 3/8 inches by 3 & 1/8 inches and were commonly called horse blankets. In 1869, the one dollar bill was redesigned with a portrait of George Washington in the center. Members phkrause Posted March 4, 2017 Author Members Posted March 4, 2017 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Why is March 2nd Important to both Americans and Puerto Ricans? This is sort of a trick question. March 2nd is the day that the people of Puerto Rico were granted U.S. citizenship, so it important to both Americans and Puerto Ricans because the people of Puerto Rico are Americans as well as Puerto Ricans. It was a territory of Spain until the Spanish-American war when the United States invaded Puerto Rico and claimed it as a U.S territory. On March 2nd, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed the bill that awarded Puerto Ricans citizenship in the U.S. So that means, you don't need your passport to go there. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Will Puerto Rico Know About an Alien Attack First? Puerto Rico has the largest telescope in the world. If aliens attack or a giant meteor hurtles towards Earth, the astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico are going to see it first. The Arecibo Radio Telescope was built in the early 60's and has been responsible for some major astronomical finds as well as starred in several Hollywood films. Don't think that an alien race coming to visit is completely impossible - the folks at Arecibo sent a message to the globular cluster M13, about 25,000 light-years away. If the aliens on the other end have a dish at least as large as the one at the Arecibo Observatory, they'll be able to receive the message and come visit us. We just hope they are friendly. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Why is a Tiny Tree Frog so Important to Puerto Ricans? The Coqui is a frog about an inch long that only lives in Puerto Rico. It is the mascot of the island, unofficially. Native Puerto Ricans will tell you to listen to the Coqui sing from sunset to sunrise; they have beautiful melodic chirps that can be heard for several miles. Plus, they are really cute as well. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What is so surprising about the Puerto Rican Flag? If you look at the Puerto Rico flag and you know that it is a territory of the U.S., you will probably assume that the flag was modeled after the flag of the United States. Well, you would be wrong there. The flag was designed in 1895, three years before the Americans invaded and claimed Puerto Rico. It was supposed to be a tribute to the Free Cuba Movement and it looks very similar to the Cuban flag, but has the colors reversed. In 1952, the flag was modified slightly, with the light blue becoming dark blue to match the American flag. Al Pacino Robert Duvall Marlon Brando James Caan I believe its Marlon Brando Answer: In 1973, Marlon Brando declined the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Vito Corleone in “The Godfather”. The Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather attended the ceremony in Brando’s place, stating that the actor “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film. Brando was the second performer to turn down a Best Actor Oscar; the first was George C. Scott, who politely declined to accept his award for Patton in 1971. Roosevelt Charlie Chaplin Albert Einstein Charles Lindbergh Answer: Charles Lindbergh was named Time magazine’s first “Man of the Year” in 1927. The tradition of selecting a Man of the Year began in 1927, with Time editors contemplating newsworthy stories possible during a slow news week. The idea was also an attempt to remedy the editorial embarrassment earlier that year for not having aviator Charles Lindbergh on its cover following his historic trans-Atlantic flight. By the end of the year, it was decided that a cover story featuring Lindbergh as the Man of the Year would serve both purposes. Members phkrause Posted March 4, 2017 Author Members Posted March 4, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Obstacles Did Sullivan Face to Become a Teacher? Anne Sullivan, born in 1866 in Massachusetts, came from poor Irish parents who had left Ireland in the 1840s to avoid starvation during the Great Famine. They had five children originally but lost two when they were infants. At age five, Anne contracted trachoma, a bacterial eye infection, which damaged her vision. Her mother died when she was eight, the father deserted the family, and Anne and her brother went to live at Tewksbury Almshouse, a poorhouse in Massachusetts. Sullivan's brother died there shortly afterward. Her chance at getting an education came when members of a commission arrived for a visit. She talked them into sending her for schooling and was enrolled at the Perkins School for the Blind. Although it was difficult for Sullivan, she excelled at school, graduating in 1886 as the valedictorian. In 1887, she was hired as a teacher for 7-year-old Helen Keller, who lived in Tuscumbia, Alabama. At the time, Sullivan was only 20 years old. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was She Hired to Teach Helen Keller? Keller was left blind, deaf and unable to speak at 19 months of age, thought to be the result of what was called "brain fever" at the time. Because it was difficult to communicate with her, she became unruly. Trying to find help for the child, Keller's father and mother arranged for a visit with a specialist in Baltimore. He, in turn, sent her to Alexander Graham Bell. The Kellers and Bell went to Perkins Institute for the Blind, located in Boston, Massachusetts, to see what could be done. It was the director of the school, Michael Anaganos, who suggested that Anne Sullivan work with the child. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: When Did the Breakthrough in Communication With the Child Come? On April 5, 1887, just over a month after Sullivan's arrival, Helen Keller realized that the motions against her hand made by her teacher were an effort to communicate with her. As Sullivan made the motions spelling the word 'w-a-t-e-r,' while water flowed over Keller's hand from the water pump, Keller said she realized the connection between the substance and the action. According to Sullivan, the little girl was startled by the realization, which showed clearly in her face. By nightfall, the child had learned the names for 30 words. This was the beginning of Helen Keller's love of learning. During her lifetime, Keller learned about 600 words, studied math, learned Braille and mastered typing. She attended Radcliffe College, accompanied by Anne Sullivan, and in 1904, was the first deaf-blind student to graduate from an institution of higher learning. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Sullivan Do the Rest of Her Life? Sullivan devoted the rest of her life to assisting and teaching Keller. Keller became a lecturer on a number of subjects, was a world traveler and prolific writer. She was also one of the founders of the American Civil Liberties Union. Anne Sullivan, whose sight problems continued to worsen, went blind in 1932. She died October 20, 1936, in Forest Hills, New York. Helen Keller went on with her work, winning numerous awards and honors throughout her lifetime and died at age 87 on June 1, 1968. Both women are interred at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Members phkrause Posted March 4, 2017 Author Members Posted March 4, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Which composer wrote the famous Wedding March? Johann Sebastian Bach Ludwig van Beethoven Felix Mendelssohn Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Answer: Felix Mendelssohn's "Wedding March", was written in 1842 as part of his suite of incidental music for a production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. At weddings in many English-speaking countries, it is commonly performed as the bridal party files out at the end of the service. It is frequently teamed with Richard Wagner's "Here Comes the Bride." This piece only became widely used in weddings after Queen Victoria's eldest daughter, Victoria, The Princess Royal, used it when she married the Crown Prince of Prussia in 1858. Members phkrause Posted March 5, 2017 Author Members Posted March 5, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did the Couple Meet? Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild for several one-year terms in the late 1940s and early 1950s. It was in that capacity that he first met Nancy Davis, a young actress who asked to meet with him because of concerns that she was being confused with another Nancy Davis whose name appeared on a communist blacklist in the late 1940s. They met in 1951 at Restaurant La Rue, a popular eatery on the Sunset Strip. Years later, she said of their initial meeting: "I don't know if it was exactly love at first sight, but it was pretty close." The two began dating and discovered that they had much in common, particularly relatively conservative political views. On a dinner date at Chasen's in West Hollywood, Reagan asked Davis to marry him, and she accepted his proposal. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Served as Best Man to Reagan at the Wedding? Fellow actor William Holden, who like Reagan was born in Illinois, was one of Reagan's closest friends, and when the latter married Nancy Davis, Holden served as his best man. Holden's wife at the time was Ardis Ankerson who also acted in motion pictures under the screen name of Brenda Marshall. Ardis served as matron of honor at the wedding ceremony, which was held in the small and unassuming Little Brown Church in the Valley, located in Studio City. The Holdens were the only witnesses to the wedding. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Shown above is the final resting place of former U.S. President Ronald W. Reagan. This was Nancy Reagan's first marriage, but it was the second for Reagan, who had been married to actress Jane Wyman from 1940 until 1949. Reagan and Wyman met when they appeared together in a film called Brother Rat in 1938. The couple had two biological children, Maureen (1941-2001) and Christine. Born prematurely, the latter lived for only about a day after her birth on June 26, 1947. Wyman and Reagan adopted a third child, Michael, who was born in 1945. Wyman filed for divorce in 1948, and the marriage was officially dissolved the following year. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Children Did Reagan Have with Davis? Reagan's 52-year marriage to Davis produced two children -- Patricia Ann (better known by her professional name of Patti Davis), born on October 21, 1952, and Ronald Prescott Reagan, born on May 20, 1958. The Reagans' relationship with Patti was strained after their daughter published an autobiography in 1992 critical of their parenting skills. Despite growing up as the child of a president revered for his conservative views, son Ronald is much more liberal in his politics and for a time hosted his own daily show on the very liberal Air America radio network. Members phkrause Posted March 5, 2017 Author Members Posted March 5, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: In medicine, what does the "R" in MRI stand for? Radiation Refractive Reflective Resonance Answer: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is a medical imaging technique used in radiology to visualize internal structures of the body in detail. The technique uses a very powerful magnet to align the nuclei of atoms inside the body, and a variable magnetic field that causes the atoms to resonate, a phenomenon called nuclear magnetic resonance. The nuclei produce their own rotating magnetic fields that a scanner detects and uses to create an image. MRI is widely used for medical diagnosis, and staging of disease without exposing the body to ionizing radiation. One Five Twelve Thirty-three Answer: The Boston Massacre occurred on this day in 1770 when British soldiers in Boston opened fire on a group of American colonists killing five men. Tensions between the American colonists and the British were already running high when a crowd of jeering Bostonians slinging snowballs gathered around a small group of British soldiers guarding the Boston Customs House. They fired into the crowd, without orders, killing five colonists. The Boston Massacre is reenacted every year on March 5th, on the actual site in front of the Old State House. Members phkrause Posted March 6, 2017 Author Members Posted March 6, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What was the Boston Massacre? A fair first question. One day, an angry colonial mob began harassing a British soldier and pelting him with sticks and snowballs. A sentry of soldiers came upon the scene, and, needless to say, the confrontation between the angry mob and the soldiers holding muskets did not end well. Shots were fired, and five colonists were killed. The artist Henry Pelham's rendition of the event, later engraved by Paul Revere, depicted the powerful British army firing on an unarmed crowd, inciting outrage in the colonies. This was a galvanizing moment in the lead-up to the US revolution. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Why was the Crowd Angry at a British Soldier That Day? A 17-year-old colonist named Edward Garrish is believed to be the one who got the crowd riled up. He was a wigmaker's apprentice and he was angry that one of the British soldiers had not paid for a wig he got from Garrish's master. What? You've never heard of a revolution starting because someone refused to pay the bill for his wig? 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Headed the British Soldiers' Defense in Court? Having murdered an unarmed group of colonists, the British soldiers had a hard time finding a lawyer in the area to defend them. Only the most callous, British-loving, freedom-hating monster would have taken on their case. Nah, just kidding, John Adams defended them. In an effort to demonstrate the impartiality of colonial courts, two Patriot leaders, John Adams and Josiah Quincy, volunteered to defend Captain Preston and his men. Although he was a patriot, Adams thought that the soldiers deserved a fair trial. Adams argued that the soldiers had the right to defend themselves. He showed that they thought their lives were in danger from the mob that had gathered. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Were the Results of the Trial? Of the eight British soldiers tried, six were acquitted and only two found guilty of manslaughter. Those two were able to capitalize on a loophole and invoke what was called the "benefit of the clergy," which allowed them to get out of a longer sentence by reading a passage from the Bible. Then they had an "M" branded onto their thumbs to let future judges know that they had already used the "benefit of the clergy" defense once and next time they could not be let off so leniently. So in other words, the punishment for manslaughter was the classic, "Okay, but promise you won't do this again" system that always works so well on toddlers. No wonder the colonists were angry. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2
