Members phkrause Posted February 18, 2017 Author Members Posted February 18, 2017 17 hours ago, phkrause said: When was the Volkswagen Beetle First Built? The Beetle has an unpleasant historical association. In 1934, Ferdinand Porsche, the German automaker, was ordered by Adolf Hitler to build a "people's car," or a Volkswagen in German. It had to be able to transport two adults and three children at 62 miles per hour, the Beetle's original top speed, and had to get 32 miles to the gallon. The parts had to be quickly and easily swapped out and the engine had to be air-cooled. The original Beetle had only 25 horsepower, and the war derailed attempts to put it into production. While a small number were made in 1941, mostly the Beetle factory Hitler had built put out military vehicles. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: When was the One Millionth Beetle Made? The Beetle nearly wound up a British car. After World War II, the factory was to be disassembled and sent to Britain, but it couldn't find a buyer. Nobody wanted to make the strange little car Hitler had demanded. A British officer named Ivan Hirst saved the factory, figuratively and literally; he had an unexploded bomb that would have destroyed irreplaceable equipment defused. He also put the Beetle to work making cars for the British Army. In January 1949, the Beetle crossed the Atlantic when one was imported to New York City. Between 1949 and 1955, demand was so high, and production increased so much, that by 1955, the millionth Beetle had rolled off the line. It was simply the most versatile, and best-engineered, car on the market. It was dirt cheap, under $2000, it sipped gas, and its far-from-stylish looks earned it affectionate nicknames like Turtle, Flea, and Mouse. And in 1960, the famous ad campaign from Doyle Dane Bernbach encouraged drivers to "think small," called it a lemon, and made fun of the pompous ad campaigns for cars at the time. The Beetle quickly found a market among teenagers, hippies, and people who just hated Detroit's aesthetic of bigger, louder, and with more chrome. They even got Wilt Chamberlain to endorse it... because at his height, he couldn't fit in the tiny car. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: When Did Volkswagen End Beetle Production? The Beetle may have had its American heyday in the 1960s, but the car itself was so well engineered, and so popular, that Volkswagen made it around the world for decades. In fact, Beetle #15,007,034 rolled off the line in 1972, and production kept going. But, eventually, the one thing the Beetle couldn't beat was time. In 2002, it had simply gotten to the point where other small cars were better at the job and mostly the Beetle sold for nostalgia or customization purposes. And so, on July 30, 2003, Beetle #21,529,464 rolled off the line in Puebla, Mexico. Christened El Rey, or The King, it was delivered to the Volkswagen Museum in Wolfsburg, where the Beetle was born. There it remains, the humble king of the automotive hill. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Sleeping Beauty Mary Poppins Cinderella Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Got to be Mary Poppins! Answer: "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" is a song from the 1964 Disney musical film Mary Poppins. According to the film, in which the word gained its popularity, it is defined as "something to say when you have nothing to say". However, it is commonly defined as "extraordinarily good" or "wonderful" as all references to the word in the film can be perceived as positive. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 1986. I thought that it was from the Sound of Music! But that was not an option! Star Search Sesame Street The Mickey Mouse Club Kids Incorporated Answer: The Mickey Mouse Club was an American variety television show that aired intermittently from 1955 to 1996. The Mickey Mouse Club was created by Walt Disney. The series has been revived, and reformatted several times since its initial 1955-1959 run on ABC. The sixth and seventh seasons of the show would be the starting point for several American pop superstars and actors. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Keri Russell, and Ryan Gosling were all on the show and had future stardom. Ha, if I was a betting man, which I'm grateful to God I'm not, I would've bet that it wasn't Sesame Street or The Mickey Mouse Club!! Members phkrause Posted February 19, 2017 Author Members Posted February 19, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did Michelangelo Get Commissioned by Cardinal Raffaele Riario to Produce What is Now One of His More Famous Works? You know those stories where a guy commits massive fraud, is caught by the FBI, and then, instead of arresting him, they hire him to catch other criminals? Well Michelangelo was doing that stuff hundreds of years before the FBI was even founded. Once, when carving a statue for Lorenzo di Pierfrancesco de' Medici, his patron had an idea for how to make some extra money. The statue looked enough like an ancient Greek work, that he figured they could scuff it up a bit, make it look like a sculpture recovered from ancient Greece and sell it for an inflated price. Just for good measure, they pulled this con on a Cardinal. And it worked. But when their mark, Cardinal Raffaele Riario found out he'd been had, he didn't attempt to punish Michelangelo. Instead he hired the young artist to carve something else. That project? It was called "Pieta" and would launch Michelangelo into another stratosphere. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Famous Michelangelo Sculpture Was Made From a Slab of Marble Rejected by Many Other Artists? Of course, if we are going to talk about Michelangelo's most famous works, we have to mention "David." There are about a hundred things making the piece impressive, but one that often gets overlooked is the marble material he used was essentially a reject material. Almost 40 years before Michelangelo created his masterpiece, the original slab of marble was procured for a few different sculptures. But eventually, the material was rejected and the marble was abandoned. Over the years, it deteriorated, and when Michelangelo took his shot with it, it had plenty of marks from other artists who had tried and failed to make something of it. Seems the material worked just fine for Michelangelo. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Famous Michelangelo Work Did the Artist First Resist and Then Regret Agreeing to Do? Michelangelo considered himself a sculptor, not a painter. So when Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel, he didn't want to do it. But what are you gonna do? Say no to the Pope? As he worked, he resented the strain painting on a ceiling put on his body. He even wrote a poem about it, starting with the opening line: "I've already grown a goiter from this torture," and finishing with "I am not in the right place - I am not a painter." Don't tell historians that. When he was done, he had created one of the most famous pieces of all time. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: In November 1969, Why Did the Vice Squad in Australia Charge a Store Owner with Obscenity? People taking offense to the vulgarity of art is hardly a newfound tradition. People have been doing it for centuries. Even with Michelangelo. A lot of his work has come under fire for being obscene. The David masterpiece itself has even had its genitals covered by a fig leaf. And in 1969, one store owner was charged with obscenity for having a poster image of the famous masterpiece. Of course, all the censorship in the world can't stop the spread of great art or the success of a great artist. It's been a few hundred years, and people are still writing trivia quizzes about the great Michelangelo. Sapphire Amethyst Emerald Aquamarine Answer: Amethyst is a semiprecious stone and is the traditional birthstone for February. The hardness of the mineral is the same as quartz, thus it is suitable for use in jewelry. Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. The Greeks believed amethyst gems could prevent intoxication, while medieval European soldiers wore amethyst amulets as protection in battle in the belief that amethysts heal people and keep them cool-headed. Members phkrause Posted February 20, 2017 Author Members Posted February 20, 2017 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did Coca-Cola Invent White Coke? While negotiating over how to split up Germany, Dwight D. Eisenhower brought a gift for Soviet Union Marshal, Georgy Zhukov: Coca-Cola. Zhukov loved the drink but realized he couldn't bring something so American as Coca-Cola back to the Soviet Union. So he asked if there was a way to make the drink look a little different. Maybe like another famous Russian drink? That's right, he wanted clear Coke that would look like vodka so no one would give him a hard time for drinking it. Coca-Cola met Zhukov's request and invented White Coke, a clear version of their drink without the caramel syrup that still tasted surprisingly like the real thing. They then sent Zhukov 50 cases in bottles with the Soviet star on them. Apparently Zhukov's bosses didn't mind him drinking a crazy amount of booze, just so long as he wasn't drinking coke. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: In 2008, the FDA Criticized Coke for What New Flavor? Looking to get in on this whole health food movement, Coca-Cola created Diet Coke Plus, a form of diet coke with minerals and nutrients added to it. This did not sit well with the FDA who couldn't help but notice that Coke was implying their beverage - which was still a soda - was healthy. They issued the soda giant a letter that, according to the Washington Post, said "The beverage does not have enough nutrients to justify the use of the word 'plus' in its name. According to the agency, foods labeled 'plus' must have at least 10 percent more nutrients than comparable products. Additionally, the FDA said it is inappropriate to add extra nutrients to 'snack foods such as carbonated beverages.'" Which is too bad, because we were really looking forward to capping off our workouts with a can of coke. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Coca-Cola Invented What Flavor as a Response to America's Love of Coffee? Speaking of catching on with the fads and enthusiasm of Americans, have you ever heard of Coca-Cola Blak? The product combined coke with "coffee essence," to create something that we're guessing tasted nothing like coffee. It debuted in Paris, then made its way to the states, though it has since been discontinued. We've never had it, but taste-maker Anderson Cooper seemed unimpressed. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Fill in the Blank: A Few Years Ago, A Representative from Coca-Cola Had to Come Out and Assert That Diet Coke with _______ Does Not Exist. And we'll finish with a flavor of Coca-Cola that sadly does not exist. Around 2008, rumors of a Diet Coke with Bacon started. There are images of the can all over the internet, and reports about testing what was then a supposedly new product. Of course, this got the bacon-loving community (i.e. everyone on the planet) very excited. It got to the point where Scott Williamson, then the VP of Public Affairs and Communication for Coke, had to address the issue in an interview with BaconToday (yes, there's a BaconToday). "To answer your question, no, there is no Diet Coke with bacon." Really? All these flavors out there and Coke can't come out with just one more?
