Which songwriter wrote the song, "This Land is Your Land” on this day in 1940?

My guess would be Arlos' Father!!

Answer: "This Land Is Your Land" is a famous folk song written by folk singer Woody Guthrie on this day in 1940. Guthrie wrote the tune in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." When Guthrie was tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he sarcastically wrote "God Blessed America for Me" before renaming it "This Land Is Your Land." The song reflected not only Guthrie’s support for the common folk, but also his deep love for his country. In 2002, it was chosen by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry.

Answer: If you’re reading this on a Mac, iPhone, or iPad, you have a Volkswagen bus to thank. Steve Jobs sold his VW bus to finance the start-up of Apple Computer. Steve Jobs was born on this day in 1955, to two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave him up for adoption. In 1976, Jobs and Steve Wozniak started Apple Computer. The duo started in the Jobs family garage, funding their venture by Jobs selling his Volkswagen bus and Wozniak selling his beloved scientific calculator. In all, Steve and Woz started Apple with a total of about $1,300.

Why Did Jobs Settle on the Name "Apple" for the Company?

You have a fad diet to thank for this one. Yes, the beloved computer company "Apple" was so named because Jobs had been following a frutarian diet, in which he would eat mostly raw fruit. While the diet may have been questionable, the choice of name certainly paid off. Not only was it memorable and user-friendly, it allowed additional products to have names that were easily identified with Apple, such as the Macintosh (pronounced like the apple variety McIntosh but deliberately spelled differently).

Why Do Apple Products All Seem to Start With "i" Now?

Starting in 1998 with the iMac, Apple moved away from using the full Macintosh name to more abbreviated monikers, many starting with a lowercase "i." That "i" initially referenced the internet. In 1998, use of the internet was growing rapidly. It was not as central to daily life as it is now, but email, news groups, and basic websites were becoming more important to people for both work and recreation. The generation of devices released by Apple at that point and beyond were meant to let people connect to the internet easily. Jobs noted that the "i" also had more abstract meanings that described how the company saw its work, including concepts like instruct, individual, inspire, and inform.

Why on Earth Was the First Apple Computer Priced at $666.66?

You'd think you'd want the price of your first product to attract people and not scare them away. While most people wouldn't have considered Apple to be a demonic company for choosing a number that's reminiscent of Biblical apocalyptic tales, no doubt at least some people would be turned off by the number 666, which was supposed to be the mark of the Antichrist. The actual reason for the number was plain old math; when Jobs and Steve Wozniak, his partner in creating the Apple computer, figured out what the retail price of the computer would be, it ended up being $666.66, though Wozniak has said that he also set it there just because he likes repeating numbers.

Oddly enough, the movie The Omen, about a family who finds out their young son is really the Antichrist, was released in 1976, the same year that the first Apple computer went on sale at that price.

If you like computer-animated movies like Toy Story and The Incredibles, thank Steve Jobs. After he left Apple in 1985, he worked on his own projects including buying an animation company run by George Lucas in 1986. That company became Pixar, known for innovative computer animation that had lifelike movements and expressions that managed to avoid venturing into Uncanny Valley territory. Eventually Disney and Pixar merged, so that little purchase back in the 1980s paid off big time.

Which man sued Apple for using his name as a code word for an upcoming computer?

Answer: In the early 90s, Apple began working on the Power Mac 7100, a product that was internally given the codename "Carl Sagan." The impetus behind the codename was a riff on Sagan's catchphrase "billions and billions", the implication being that the 7100 would go on to make Apple billions of dollars. The codename was used strictly internally however when Carl Sagan heard of it, he sued Apple. Sagan lost, but Apple engineers still complied with his request and changed the codename to BHA, which referred to "Butt-Head Astronomer." So Sagan sued again, this time for libel, and lost again.

Answer: Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, in Edinburgh, Scotland. The second son of Alexander Melville Bell and Eliza Grace Symonds Bell, he was named for his paternal grandfather. Friends and family called him Alec, but he was not given a middle name at birth. At the age of ten, he made a plea to his father to have a middle name like his two brothers. For his 11th birthday, his father acquiesced and allowed him to adopt the name "Graham", chosen out of respect for Alexander Graham, a man being treated by his father who had become a family friend.

How Did Samuel Colt Develop The Revolving Gun?

In 1830, Samuel Colt travelled from Boston to Calcutta, and on this trip he began devising the idea of the revolving gun. He carved the shape of the revolving cylinder and percussion hammer that is still used in guns to this day out of wood.

When he returned to America he showed the idea to his father, who gave him the money to produce 2 prototypes, but no more. To generate finances to further his ideas, he began to perform laughing gas experiments under the name Dr Coult of Calcuttaacross the USA and Canada. His earnings were sent back to gunsmiths in Hartford, Albany and Baltimore who produced further prototypes of the firearms.

In 1835 he took out patents in England and France before receiving the American patents on February the 25th 1836.

When Did The Colt Manufacturing Company Start?

Samuel Colt's first firearms company was opened in 1836 when the first factory was built in Paterson, New Jersey and was called The Patent Arms Manufacturing Company. Unfortunately the first company was not a success and closed in 1842.

In 1846 Samuel Colt was approached by Captain Samuel Walker of the US Army to help design a new, more powerful, firearm to be used in the Mexican War. The US Army ordered 1,000 of the newly designed firearms putting Colt back into the firearms business again. The "Walker Colt" was produced in Eli Whitney Jr's factory in Connecticut in 1847. Samuel Colt built 2 factories in the early 1850s, and in 1855 his company was incorporated as Colt's Patent Fire Arms Manufacturing Company.

How Did Samuel Colt Market His Guns?

Samuel Colt is recognized as one of the earliest American manufacturers to make full use of marketing. He used traditional marketing methods such as advertising, product sampling and sales promotion as well as innovative methods such as product placement. He personally commissioned George Catlin to incorporate images of the Colt revolvers into 12 of his paintings.

Because of his marketing success, Colt became one of the top ten wealthiest businessmen in the Unites States. In the year prior to his death his company had made profit in excess of $250,000, and at the time of his death his estate was reportedly worth $15 million.

Where Did Samuel Colt Live?

The most famous building that Samuel Colt lived in was Armsmear mansion, which was built in 1857. The building was called "the grandest residence in the Hartford of its day." The building is still standing today, although it has been altered from the original design.

Elizabeth Colt, Samuel Colt's wife, remained in the house after his death until she died in 1905. In her will she generously left the grounds of the Colt estate to the City of Hartford which was used to create Colt Park. The house itself was turned into an Episcopal home for the elderly which is still standing today.

Answer: In 1975, The Godfather: Part II became the first sequel in Oscar history to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. It won the coveted award two years after the original film was named Best Picture. The sequel was nominated for a total of 11 Oscars, with three separate nominations in the Best Supporting Actor category alone: one for Michael Vincenzo Gazzo (who played Frankie Pentangeli) and Lee Strasberg (as Hyman Roth), and one for Robert De Niro, who took home the statuette for playing the younger version of Vito Corleone.

1. What was the Entirety of Joe Pesci’s Speech at the 63rd Awards?

For a guy like Joe Pesci to not blab on and on is a minor miracle. But this is exactly what we got at the 63rd Academy Awards. Pesci won for Best Supporting Actor in Goodfellas, stepped up, and simply said, “It was my privilege. Thank you.”

Whether this was due to humility, drunkenness, a forgotten speech, the whole endless swearing thing, or some weird combination of the four, nobody but Pesci knows. Us Non-Joes must settle for being highly amused over how quickly the orchestra had to key back up, long before they actually expected to do so.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

2. What was the Shortest Speech, Period?

Amazingly, Pesci’s six-word epic was not the shortest speech of all-time. That would be William Holden, winner of Best Actor for Stalag 17 at the 26th Awards. Told to keep his speech as short as possible since the show was running into overtime, Holden was only able to blurt out, “Thank you, thank you,” before being escorted back to his seat.

On a side note, Alfred Hitchcock almost beat the record at the 40th Awards. Upon receiving the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (making his one and only Oscar an honorary one,) a clearly-underwhelmed Hitchcock stepped up to the mic and simply said, “Thank you.” But then he went back and added, “very much indeed,” rendering him positively loquacious compared to Mr. Holden.

3. So Who Had the Longest Speech?

Sadly, this record was set before cameras were around to record everything — all we have are brief snippets from newsreels. But eyewitnesses (and the Guinness Book of World Records) peg Greer Garson’s five minutes and 30 seconds speech at the 15th Awards as the longest ever. While accepting the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Mrs. Miniver, Garson waxed poetic longer than Homer’s Iliad, going on and on about the deeper meaning behind awards, as well as anything else that came to her head.

How did she start this epic soliloquy, by the way? With “I’m practically unprepared” of course. Beware if you ever hear that phrase, for it usually means the most overly prepared speech of the night is about to commence.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

4. Name the Native American Who Appeared at the 45th Awards in place of Marlon Brando?

In order to protest Hollywood’s mistreatment of Native Americans (and because he was Marlon Brando), the actor declined the Best Actor Oscar for his role in The Godfather. In fact, he did not even appear on the show. Instead, he hired a Native American civil rights activist named Sacheen Littlefeather to appear in his place.

Littlefeather was supposed to read a 15-page speech prepared by Brando explaining why he would not accept the Oscar, but the show’s producers would only allow her to speak for a short time. She was able to sum up Brando’s anger in just over a minute, and amazingly used no curse words in the process. Unlike some people …

5. What Actress Accidentally Unleashed the F-bomb During Her Speech?

Even though the Oscars are (more or less) live, and everybody is swept up in the emotion of the moment, only one F-bomb has ever escaped somebody’s lips onstage. That would be Melissa Leo, accepting the 83rd Best Supporting Actress Oscar for The Fighter. After finding herself at a loss for words, she finally uttered, “When I watched Kate (Winslet) two years ago, it (the speech) looked so f—— easy.”

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

6. What did Sally Field Actually Say in 1985, Instead of “You Like Me, You Really Like Me”?

Even though video footage of her speech exists, people love to misquote Sally Field’s acceptance of the 57th Best Actress Oscar for her role in Places In The Heart. After talking about how her career had been less-than-traditional up to that point, she closed out her speech with “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!” This quickly became “You like me, you really like me,” because fact-checking is hard and making stuff up is easy.

Soon, we shall learn if anybody from Hollywood plans to do anything this year that would make for a great future Oscar trivia question. Perhaps somebody could break the record for shortest speech, by walking up to the stage, grabbing the Oscar, and then leaving without saying a darn thing? Four words is quite impressive, but zero is literally unbeatable.

Answer: Officially named the Academy Award of Merit, the statuette is better known by its nickname, Oscar. The original design of “Oscar” was by MGM art director Cedric Gibbons. The figure on the Oscar is intended to be a knight, standing at attention and holding a sword. The Oscar statue weighs 8.5 pounds and stands 13.5 inches tall. It is constructed of Britannia metal with gold plating. Each Oscar statuette stands on a film reel, which has five spokes representing the original branches of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
