The company provided transportation and delivery of gold dust, important documents and other valuable freight. The name Wells Fargo is forever linked with the image of a six-horse stagecoach thundering across the American West, loaded with gold. After losing his 1888 campaign for a second term to Benjamin Harrison, Cleveland once again faced off against Harrison in the presidential election of 1892. Also running for the presidency in 1892 was Iowan James B. Pearson of the Populist Party. It turned out to be one of the nation's most low-key presidential campaigns of the period. Harrison did not campaign at all, primarily because his wife, Caroline, was dying of tuberculosis. She died on October 25, two weeks before the election. Out of respect for Harrison's loss, the other candidates stopped campaigning after Caroline Harrison's death. Cleveland won both the popular and electoral votes. He won 5,556,918 popular votes and 277 electoral votes, against 5,176,108 and 145, respectively, for Harrison, and 1,041,028 and 22, respectively, for Pearson. On 3/18/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: Why Did Cleveland Push for Repeal of the Silver Purchase Act? Enacted in 1890 during the presidency of Benjamin Harrison, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act required the U.S. Treasury to purchase 4.5 million ounces of silver every month. During this period, U.S. Treasury notes -- paper currency -- were redeemable in either gold or silver. These massive monthly purchases of silver forced miners to increase their production of the metal, which eventually depressed market prices. As a result, holders of U.S. government notes opted to redeem them for gold rather than silver. Convinced that the Silver Act was responsible for a drain on U.S. gold reserves, President Cleveland in the summer of 1893 called Congress into special session and urged that the Silver Act be repealed. Acceding to the president's request, the House of Representatives voted 239-108 for repeal, while the Senate also supported repeal by a vote of 48-37. On 3/18/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: Who Was Cleveland's Second-Term Running Mate? Cleveland's running mate for his second attempt to regain the presidency was Adlai Stevenson I, a former congressman from Illinois and assistant postmaster general during Cleveland's first term in the White House. Stevenson was also the grandfather of Adlai Stevenson II, a Democrat who twice ran unsuccessfully for the presidency in the 1950s. On 3/18/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: Where Did Cleveland Stand on Women's Voting Rights? Cleveland was unalterably opposed to the idea of women voting. In 1905, he argued that females would probably be so easily swayed that they "would become either the purchased or cajoled victims of plausible political manipulators, or the intimidated and helpless voting vassals of imperious employers." He went on to contend that "sensible and responsible" women had no interest in voting anyway, adding that "the relative positions to be assumed by men and women in the working out of our civilization were assigned long ago by a higher intelligence." In 1993 Trump married Marla Maples, an actress with whom he had been involved for some time and already had a daughter, Tiffany. The couple married at New York City's Plaza Hotel in a ceremony reportedly attended by a thousand guests, including Rosie O'Donnell and O. J. Simpson. Trump would ultimately file for a highly publicized divorce from Maples in 1997, which became final in June 1999. A prenuptial agreement allotted $2 million to Maples. "All You Need Is Love" "I Want to Hold Your Hand" "Come Together" "Eight Days a Week" Come Together would be my pick Answer: "Come Together" is a song by the Beatles written primarily by John Lennon. The song started as Lennon's attempt to write a song for Timothy Leary's campaign for governor of California against Ronald Reagan, which promptly ended when Leary was sent to prison for possession of marijuana. His slogan was 'Come together, join the party'. Lennon sent Leary a demo tape of song ideas. However, when Leary was imprisoned for cannabis possession the campaign ended, enabling Lennon to record the song with The Beatles. Members phkrause Posted March 20, 2017 Author Members Posted March 20, 2017 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was the Property Named Graceland? Originally, the land where Graceland was built was located on 500 acres owned by the family of Stephen Cummings Toof, and Presley purchased the property from Ruth Marie Moore, and her husband, Charles Pittman Cobb. It was Ruth Brown Moore, daughter of S.C. Toof, mother of Ruth Marie Moore, along with her husband, Dr. Thomas D. Moore, who had built Graceland in 1939. The property was named Graceland after Mrs. Moore's aunt, Grace Toof. The 13.8-acre property included a house measuring 10,000 square feet. After placing a cash deposit of $1,000 down on the property, Presley paid $102,500 for Graceland. Along with Presley, his parents and grandmother, Minnie Mae, lived there. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: What Coincided With Elvis Presley's First Christmas at His New Home? Presley received the notice that he had been drafted. After receiving a deferment for 60 days in order to complete the movie, King Creole, he reported to the U.S. Army in March 1958. Following his basic training of six months, which included leave to be with his dying mother in August 1958, Presley was sent to Europe. He served 18 months in Friedberg, Germany, with Company D, 32nd Tank Battalion, 3rd Armor Corps, where he was promoted to sergeant. The remainder of Presley's service was spent in the United States in a residence off-base. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Presley's House on Audubon Drive Have to Do With the Purchase of Graceland? The contract for the purchase was signed not only by Presley, but by his father and mother, Vernon and Gladys. As part of the final purchase of Graceland, Presley paid $10,000 and transferred the house on Audubon Drive, valued at $55,000 to Ruth Brown Moore. Rather than sell the home, she rented it out to relatives. After this, the amount Presley owed on Graceland was $37,000. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was Presley Buried at Graceland? Presley was actually buried twice. Following his death on Aug. 16, 1977, and interment at Forest Hills Cemetery in Memphis, three men were discovered at the Presley mausoleum, reportedly picking at the gate. They were arrested in their car by local police. A fourth man, believed to be involved, was arrested at a nearby hospital after injuring himself trying to climb over a fence. The first three men were charged with trespassing, while the fourth was not charged. Supposedly, police had received information several days previously that an attempt would be made to steal Presley's body for ransom. Because of this supposed attempt, the Memphis Board of Adjustment changed the local zoning law to allow the body to be taken to Graceland for burial. The Meditation Garden was the place where Presley's body was reinterred, along with the body of his mother, Gladys, which was also moved from Forest Hills. Vernon Presley and Minnie Mae Presley are also interred there. A cenotaph was placed in the Meditation Garden in remembrance of Jesse Garon Presley, the twin brother of Elvis, who was stillborn. Marlon Brando Charlie Chaplin John Wayne Humphrey Bogart Answer: It was first reported at the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer to Britain's Prince Charles, that Diana was the seventh cousin of Humphrey Bogart related through their common ancestors of Joseph Morgan and his wife Dorothy Parke who lived in Connecticut in the 17th century. Princess Diana had American ancestry through her mother's side of the family. The tough-guy American movie actor and Princess Diana are linked through the two daughters of Joseph Morgan, a pioneer New England farmer who died in 1704. Members phkrause Posted March 21, 2017 Author Members Posted March 21, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did John Lennon Originally Go to the Art Gallery Where He Met Yoko Ono? John Lennon and Yoko Ono reportedly met at an art gallery, where she was showing off some modern art that was ... um ... different. (As you'll see, this form of expression would become par for the course for the couple as time went on.) So did Lennon go because he was a fan of modern art? Heck no. He was there because the gallery's co-owner had told him the exhibit was featuring a Japanese woman in a black bag. As Lennon would later explain in an interview, he thought that meant, "Artsy-fartsy orgies. Great!" When he got there, he was disappointed to find that this was just a modern art exhibit, replete with an apple on a stand selling for almost $500, and a bag of nails selling for almost $250. "I thought this is a con; what the hell is this," Lennon later told an interviewer for the BBC. "Nothing's happening in the bags. I'm expecting an orgy, you know ... and it's all quiet." But the event wasn't a total waste. He met that Japanese woman, and she became his wife. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did John Lennon and Yoko Ono Do after Their Wedding to Promote World Peace? John Lennon and Yoko Ono knew the whole world was watching when they got married, so they decided to take advantage of the attention. They decided to stay in bed as part of a movement to promote world peace. Which is amazing, because we don't feel like getting up and doing anything all the time, and we had no idea we could use that as an excuse to say we were promoting world peace. They invited the media to come to their hotel room from 9 am to 9 pm, for seven straight days. And there they stayed, hanging out in their pajamas and talking world peace. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Bagism? Ono eventually delivered on that hanging-out-in-a-bag promise from earlier, when she and Lennon held a press conference in Vienna. The two showed up to the press conference wearing a giant, two-person bag. Seriously. The idea was that a person living in a bag wouldn't be judged by their looks. Which is ridiculous, because if we saw someone living in a bag, we would totally judge them. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did Lennon and Ono Do with the Aston Martin He Totaled in 1969? John Lennon got his driver's license at the ripe old age of 24, making him the last Beatle to accomplish the feat. He also was apparently terrible at driving. In 1969, driving his Aston-Martin with his family, Lennon got into a major accident and needed 17 stitches. After that, he decided maybe he was rich enough to just hire a chauffeur. So what did they do with the wrecked car? They mounted it on a pillar in their house. After all this, are you surprised?
