In 2012, which company bought the rights to Star Wars?

Disney??

Answer: In October 2012, Disney bought Lucasfilm, and the rights to the Star Wars franchise, for $4 billion. Luke Skywalker and Han Solo joined Mickey Mouse, Snow White and Iron Man in Disney's roster of heroes. It’s the fourth largest amount Disney has paid to date to buyout another company. Said Disney CEO Robert Iger: "This is one of the great entertainment properties of all time, one of the best branded and one of the most valuable, and it's just fantastic for us to have the opportunity to both buy it, run it and grow it."

Answer: Robert Ford was an outlaw best known for killing his gang leader Jesse James on April 3, 1882 to collect a reward. Initially, Ford was charged with murdering Jesse James, but was quickly pardoned by Governor Crittenden and given a portion of the reward. For a time he and his older brother Charles made a living doing re-enactments of the killing, earning a living off of his reputation of being “the man who killed Jesse James.” In 1892 he was killed in a tent saloon in Creede, Colorado. "The man who shot Jesse James" was inscribed on his grave marker.

How Fast Was the Pony Express?

It delivered mail like lightning, compared to regular mail service. Previous mail deliveries had to be taken by ship or by stagecoach, which took about 25 days. Mail delivery by Pony Express took an average of 10 days. Almost 200 stations were established by the company’s owners, William Waddell, Alexander Majors and William Russell across eight states. Starting with California, stations were located in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. The riders would race their horses between the stations and change to fresh mounts every 10 to 15 miles. New couriers would take the previous rider’s place every 75 to 100 miles. Their best record was in March 1861 at fewer than eight days when the inaugural address of President Abraham Lincoln was delivered from Nebraska to California.

What Were Important Factors in Becoming a Pony Express Rider?

Since the object of the Pony Express was fast mail delivery, the weight of the rider was important to get a job with the company. Most riders weighed under 125 pounds. Riders tended to be young, with 20 the average age, but the Pony Express also hired teenagers, some only 14 years old. According to an ad placed in several newspapers, the company was looking for young, wiry fellows under 18 years of age and preferably orphaned. The pay was $100 per month, a substantial sum in those days, while the original cost to send a letter was $5 per half ounce.

How Did the Pony Express System Work?

Pony Express way-stations were set up 10 to 15 miles apart along the 1,800-mile Pony Express Trail. While each rider was expected to carry a shipment somewhere between 75 and 100 miles, horses had to be changed every 10 or 15 miles. The average speed of Pony Express riders was said to be 10 miles per hour.

Although horses and riders changed along the route, the mail pouch -- called a mochila from the Spanish for backpack or pouch -- was the one constant throughout the trip. The mochila, flung over the saddle and kept in place by the weight of the rider, typically had four pockets -- one at each corner of the pouch. It could carry up to 20 pounds of mail. An additional 20 pounds of supplies included a revolver, water sack, Holy Bible, and a horn to alert the next way-station's master to prepare a fresh horse.

What Caused the Pony Express to Fail?

The Pony Express was only in business for about 19 months. Two things marked its decline and eventual failure in October 1861. The Pyramid Lake War between the Paiute Indians and the U.S. government caused the company to shut down, costing about $75,000 in lost revenues. The parent company of the Pony Express, the Central Overland California and Pikes Peak Express Company, also hoped to win a large government contract to carry the mail and made large expenditures with this aim but ended up losing several hundred thousand dollars. The final reason the Pony Express folded was the completion of a telegraph line to San Francisco by the Pacific Telegraph Company. The Pony Express declared it was out of business that same month.

Answer: Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional Japanese poetry. A traditional Japanese haiku is a three-line poem. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. Previously called hokku, haiku was given its current name by the Japanese writer Masaoka Shiki at the end of the 19th century. Among the greatest traditional haiku poets are Basho, Yosa Buson, Kobayashi Issa, and Masaoka Shiki.

Who Shot Martin Luther King Jr.?

Between the evidence and witness reports, the police linked the shooting to an escaped criminal named James Earl Ray, who was renting a room across the street from the Lorraine Motel, and who was found trying to flee the country after the murder. Ray plead guilty, but soon thereafter rescinded his plea and claimed he was being set up. His subsequent requests for a trial were all denied, even as King's family came out in support of Ray, saying he was innocent and fearing that this might be part of a larger government conspiracy after the way the FBI had acted towards King while he was alive. However, numerous investigations into King's assassination have all declared Ray to be King's assassin.

Why Was King on the Balcony That Night?

Realizing the place he held in society, King went to great efforts not to be seen or photographed with cigarettes for fear of kids taking after him, but the fact is King was a regular smoker. That night, he was out for a cigarette on the balcony when he was shot. His friend, Reverend Kyles, pulled the cigarette from King's hand and a pack from his pocket, in part hoping to prevent people from finding out he was smoking the night he died.

Why Was There an Extreme Delay Getting an Ambulance after King Was Shot?

The switchboard operator working at the hotel that night was a woman named Lorraine Bailey (the hotel owner's wife and the establishment's namesake). She had stepped outside, hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous civil rights figure, and was watching him when he was shot. The event was so traumatic that she suffered a heart attack and died herself. When Kyles picked up the hotel phone hoping to reach the operator to call an ambulance, no one answered. The ambulance was only finally called when the police arrived.

How Did King Almost Die Ten Years Earlier?

April 4th was not the first assassination attempt on Martin Luther King. One a decade earlier nearly killed him too. A mentally disturbed woman named Izola Ware Curry (who died last month) stabbed him in the chest with a letter opener while he was on a book tour in 1958. It took three hours to remove the blade that was pressed up against his aorta, and his doctor reportedly told him afterwards, "If you had sneezed during all those hours of waiting, your aorta would have been punctured and you would have drowned in your own blood."

Leave it to Martin Luther King, though, to be almost killed and yet to still respond with love. At a press conference he said, "I feel no ill will toward Mrs. Izola Curry and know that thoughtful people will do all in their power to see that she gets the help she apparently needs if she is to become a free and constructive member of society." For most of us, it's a level of compassion we couldn't begin to muster. For King, it was standard.

Answer: James Earl Ray shot and killed Martin Luther King Jr. on this day in 1968, as the civil rights leader was standing on a balcony outside of his motel room. After shooting King, Ray immediately fled, setting off an international manhunt. At the time, it was said to be the FBI's most expensive investigation in its history. Two months after King's death, Ray was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport while trying to leave the United Kingdom on the false Canadian passport. Ray pleaded guilty to the murder, and was sentenced to 99 years in prison.

Answer: Born into slavery on this day in 1856, Booker T. Washington put himself through school and became a teacher after the Civil War. Between 1890 and 1915, Washington was the dominant leader in the African-American community. On April 7, 1940, Washington became the first African American to be depicted on a United States postage stamp. Several years later, he was honored on the first coin to feature an African American, the Booker T. Washington Memorial Half Dollar, which was minted by the United States from 1946 to 1951. He was also depicted on a U.S. Half Dollar from 1951–1954.

Why Was the U.S. Government Searching for Spies?

In the latter part of 1941, the U.S. government began working on the development of an atomic bomb, codenamed The Manhattan Project. After making a breakthrough in 1942 with Enrico Fermi’s testing of a nuclear chain reaction, which was successful, the project expanded, and an atomic bomb assembly plant at Los Alamos, New Mexico, was put into operation. In 1945, J. Robert Oppenheimer tested the first atomic bomb at Trinity Site, outside of Alamogordo, New Mexico.

In 1949, the Soviets tested their first atomic bomb, leading the American government to believe that a spy had given them the knowledge to build one. A code employed by the Soviets and used to send encrypted messages in the middle of the 1940s showed that Julius Rosenberg was in communication with the Soviets.

What Role Did Ethel Rosenberg’s Brother Have in the Espionage?

David Greenglass, a mechanic who was employed as an Army machinist at the Los Alamos facility, was indicted along with his sister and her husband, Julius Rosenberg. However, Greenglass’ testimony during the trial was on the side of the government. During his testimony, he stated that he had given the couple secret information and had seen his sister typing it down. This testimony was important in the conviction of the Rosenbergs for the crime. However, many years later, Greenglass recanted his story in a book and television interview of having seen his sister typing down the stolen information. Instead, he reportedly heard the story from his wife.

How Did the Background of the Rosenbergs Lead to Spying for the Russians?

Rosenberg originally became interested in politics while he was attending Seward Park High School. There, he joined the Young Communist League. While studying electrical engineering at City College, he became involved with Morton Sobell, who was also convicted on charges of espionage along with the Rosenbergs. Ethel, also an active member of the Communist party, married Julius Rosenberg in 1939. Reportedly, Julius Rosenberg urged his wife’s brother to steal data for him related to The Manhattan Project.

What Happened to Those Accused of Spying?

Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed on June 19, 1953, with Julius first and his wife afterward in the same electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in New York. Ethel’s brother, David Greenglass, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. When released in 1960, he lived under a different name in Queens, New York, until his death in 2014. Morton Sobell was sentenced to 30 years and served about 18 years in federal prisons, including the infamous Alcatraz, before being released in 1969. The charge of which he was convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage.

In an interview many years later, Sobell said that Ethel Rosenberg knew about her husband’s activities but did not participate in them. He also stated that sketches and details about the construction of the atomic bomb were passed by Greenglass to Rosenberg but were of little use to the Russians since they had already obtained that information elsewhere.

Answer: Iraq's famous ruins of Babylon can be found about 56 miles south of Baghdad, next to the Euphrates River. Babylon, which can be translated to "the gate of the gods" served as the center of ancient civilization for over 1,500 years. Babylon was one of the glories of the ancient world, its walls and mythic hanging gardens listed among the Seven Wonders. Founded about 4,000 years ago, the ancient city was the capital of 10 dynasties in Mesopotamia, considered one of the earliest cradles of civilization and the birthplace of writing and literature.
