He is referred to as the "Father of Modern Medicine" in recognition of his lasting contributions to the field as the founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine. He has been revered for his ethical standards in medical practice, mainly for the Hippocratic Oath, which, it is suspected, he did not write. Members phkrause Posted April 10, 2017 Author Members Posted April 10, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Practical Effect of Lee's Surrender? Lee was the commander of the Army of Northern Virginia, which was the primary force of the Confederacy in the eastern theater of the Civil War. Having been outflanked in a lengthy engagement near Petersburg, Lee decided his only course of action was to head west in an attempt to join his forces with those of the Army of Tennessee under the command of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. However, Union forces once again outflanked the Confederates, and a series of battles ensued, further weakening Lee's forces. His troops depleted in numbers and starved for supplies, Lee decided the time had come to surrender. While only one of the Confederate armies had surrendered, Lee's army was by far the most distinguished of those fighting for the causes of the South, and thus his surrender was the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. Although scattered skirmishes continued for a few weeks, the Civil War quickly drew to an end. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Notable about the Place of Surrender? The surrender ceremony took place in the parlor of a home owned by Wilmer McLean and located close to Appomattox Court House. Forty-six-year-old McLean was too old to serve in the Confederate armed forces when the war broke out, but he soon found himself in the thick of things anyway. At the time McLean was living in a plantation home near Manassas that had been inherited by his wife. As Union troops approached from the east in July 1861, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard seized the home for use as his headquarters. The home and its outbuildings suffered significant damage in the ensuing fighting. After the dust had cleared, McLean decided to relocate his family to Appomattox Court House, which he felt was far enough away from the frontlines to be safe. Less than four years later, the conflict once again caught up to the embattled McLeans, and it was in their new home that Lee surrendered to Grant. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Terms of Surrender Did Grant Demand of Lee? In victory, Grant was magnanimous, offering Lee's Army of Northern Virginia terms that were relatively generous considering the fierce fighting that had gone on for more than four years. Lee's officers were allowed to keep their sidearms, and Grant decreed that none of Lee's men was to be imprisoned or tried for treason. Grant also said that Lee's troops could keep their horses and mules so that they could make their way back to their homes. Of most immediate importance to the Confederate troops under Lee's command, Grant ordered that Union rations be distributed to them so that they could eat before setting off on their journeys homeward. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: How Many Americans Died in the Civil War? Approximately 625,000 men died in the Civil War, more Americans than in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War combined. The Civil War death toll represented roughly 2 percent of the U.S. population at that time. If the names of the Civil War dead were arranged like the names on the Vietnam Memorial, it would stretch over 10 times the wall’s length. Old Faithful was named in 1870 during the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition and was the first geyser in the park to receive a name. It is one of the most predictable geographical features on Earth, erupting almost every 63 minutes. More than 1,000,000 eruptions have been recorded. Members phkrause Posted April 12, 2017 Author Members Posted April 12, 2017 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was Yoko Ono Blamed for the Breakup? Timing was mostly to blame for Yoko Ono's status as the woman who supposedly destroyed the Beatles. Lennon would bring Ono to the studio and ask for her input on songs, something none of the guys had ever done before. That created tension -- and McCartney admitted that he and the other bandmates felt threatened by her presence -- which only fed into the already simmering feuds between the guys. Ono was also scapegoated by McCartney somewhat; he was originally blamed for breaking up the band, so he mentioned that Ono's presence had created a lot of tension while giving another interview on April 16. However, McCartney admitted in 2012 that it really wasn't Ono's fault. There was already so much going on behind the scenes that the band was headed for a breakup anyway, and Ono noted that at that point, everyone in the band had become independent. McCartney and Ono are now on better terms; McCartney said he finally realized that any resistance to Ono being present was his own problem. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Made People Think the Beatles Had Broken up at All? McCartney's interview answers never fully confirmed that the Beatles had broken up. In fact, they were rather ambiguous, answering questions about McCartney's work with the band with vague answers about how he really didn't know if his solo career was the end of his work with the Beatles. But when McCartney said that he didn't foresee writing songs with Lennon again, the media and fans latched onto the interview as if it were an official announcement from the band as a whole. It didn't help that the day before, the Daily Mirror had claimed the Beatles were breaking up based on an advance copy that the paper had received of McCartney's answers. The interview created more animosity between the band members. Lennon publicly discussed his anger at the interview in an interview of his own, and finally, in December, McCartney filed paperwork to officially end his business affiliation with the band. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: What Really Caused the Breakup? The Beatles had been drifting apart for several years before the 1970 interview. Lennon's growing interest in activism, encouraged by Ono, saw him drifting away; everyone was releasing their own work; and McCartney, at least, was not very happy with Allen Klein, who was the Beatles' manager after Brian Epstein died. Things got worse in early 1970 when McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the Beatles all had separate albums due to be released around the same time. Klein had asked the band's label, EMI, to delay only McCartney's album release without getting McCartney's input (Starr eventually convinced everyone to delay the Beatles' release instead). Klein also had Phil Spector finish up the production on one of the Beatles' songs on the new album, and Spector added in extra instruments on "The Long and Winding Road" without McCartney's permission. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was Really the First to Leave the Beatles? While people seized on McCartney's interview answers as proof that he was leaving and the Beatles were over, McCartney wasn't the first to leave. That was actually George Harrison, who was later brought back into the group. That was in 1968. In 1969, John Lennon left, but everyone in the group agreed to not say anything and just pretend they were still together (it helped that their final album, Let It Be, had yet to be released, though it didn't hit stores until a month after McCartney's interview). Unfortunately, by 1970 the bandmates' professional relationships had grown so strained that it was finally time for everyone to move on. Scott Fitzgerald John Steinbeck Answer: “The Great Gatsby” is a novel written by author F. Scott Fitzgerald and published on this day in 1925. The Great Gatsby received mixed reviews and sold poorly; in its first year, the book sold only 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing that the book was a failure. However, the novel experienced a revival during World War II, and became a part of American high school curricula and numerous stage and film adaptations in the following decades. Today, it is widely considered to be a literary classic. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Answer: The Hundred Years' War is the name modern historians have given to what was a series of related conflicts, fought over a 116-year period, between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of France, beginning in 1337, and ending in 1453. It was one of the most notable conflicts of the Middle Ages, in which five generations of kings from two rival dynasties fought for the throne of the largest kingdom in Western Europe. The war marked both the height of chivalry and its subsequent decline, and the development of strong national identities in both countries. Members phkrause Posted April 12, 2017 Author Members Posted April 12, 2017 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Were the Astronauts Aboard Apollo 13? The launch was commanded by James A. Lovell, Jr. He had extensive experience as a test pilot. Lovell had previously been a member of the 1965 Gemini 7 mission. In 1966, he commanded the Gemini 12 mission. He served as Navigator and pilot of the command module on Apollo 8, the first trip to the moon in 1968. Lovell and his co-astronauts, William Anders and Frank Borman, were the first astronauts to leave Earth’s gravity. The launch of Apollo 13 made Lovell the first astronaut to travel to the moon twice. John L. Swigert, Jr. held a master's degree in Aerospace Science and worked as a test pilot and fighter pilot. He served as part of the support crew for Apollo 7 and as a backup for crew members of Apollo 13. When Thomas Mattingly was withdrawn due to illness, Swigert was named pilot of the command module on Apollo 13. Fred W. Haise held a degree in aeronautical engineering and was a research pilot. He had also flown extensively as a pilot in tactical fighters and fighter interceptors. He was Apollo 13’s lunar module pilot and backup pilot for the missions assigned for Apollo 8 and 11. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Life-Threatening Problem Occurred in Space? NASA first received news that the Apollo 13 mission was in trouble when it received the message, “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” from Jack Swigert. Feeling a vibration accompanied by a bang, the warning light came on for the main B bus undervolt, which was the electrical interface that transfers signals between devices. Following this, one of the oxygen tanks fell to zero. More warning lights lit up, and the number one oxygen tank started failing. Fred Haise tried to reconnect the system to Bus A, but it was lacking sufficient electrical current. The astronauts were left with one operating fuel cell, insufficient to attempt a moon landing. Looking outside, Lovell saw that some substance was leaking from Apollo 13. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Role Did the Lunar Module Have in Protecting the Astronauts? The lunar module, Aquarius, hadn’t been turned on because it was reserved for when the astronauts were closer to the moon. It also wasn’t equipped with a heat shield so it couldn’t be used to reenter the Earth’s atmosphere. The plan was for the astronauts to stay in Aquarius and shut down the command module Odyssey’s systems to reserve power for reentry and the splashdown. After powering down all systems that were not essential, the astronauts performed a burn and pointed the spacecraft toward Earth. On the return trip, water was rationed, temperatures dropped dramatically and some of the food became inedible. The astronauts splashed down on April 17 in the Pacific Ocean. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Caused the Accident? The Accident Review Board concluded that heater switches had not been modified, along with other improvements made to the oxygen tank heaters. The voltage had been raised from 28 to 65 volts. After leaving the heaters on for a long time, the wiring was shown to reach 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which degraded the wiring insulation. In the wake of Apollo 13, engineers redesigned the oxygen tanks to prevent similar accidents. Also, a third oxygen tank was added to the service module, as an additional backup. Eight more Apollo spacecraft flew and none of them experienced the same trouble again. The 23,000-square foot Georgian-style manse sits on over 42 acres and touts a tea house, more than 600 rose bushes and an upscale outhouse. Oprah reportedly paid $52-million for her home. The home, as it stands now, was built in 1959, with several additions along the way. It is now worth almost $88-million, with a recent property tax bill of $904,239.00.
