Members phkrause Posted April 26, 2017 Author Members Posted April 26, 2017 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was the Library Established? Originally, the library was supposed to be simply a legislative library, holding documents that the members of Congress could access quickly. As the library grew, it started including copies of all books and other works that had a copyright in the United States. Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson had advocated building and expanding the library because they, and especially Jefferson, thought that Congress needed access to information about as many topics as possible in order to do a good job making laws. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: How Quickly Did the Library Grow? The library started at over 900 documents and quickly grew to about 3,000; however, in 1814, the British destroyed the library and all its volumes when they invaded and destroyed Washington. At that point, Jefferson offered to sell his own 6400+-volume library to the government to re-establish the library. The library continued to grow, reaching about 55,000 volumes by 1851, when a fire destroyed nearly two-thirds of the library. Congress got to work on replacing those lost volumes quickly. The library experienced a huge jump in documents in 1870 when the Librarian of Congress, Ainsworth Rand Spofford, created the Copyright Law. This required that two copies of any document or recording (basically anything) that was being awarded a copyright in the United States had to be in the Library of Congress. As of 2012, the number of books alone in the library surpassed 35.8 million; that number does not include manuscripts, maps, sheet music, and other documents, all of which are present in the millions as well. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What Is the Difference Between the Library of Congress and a Regular Research Library? The sheer number of documents is the real difference between a regular research library, such as one at a university, and the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress can be used by anyone as long as they are 16 years old or older. You do need a library card from the Library of Congress if you want to use the reading rooms or collections. In a university library, you would need a card to check out items, but you could sit in the library and read without a card as long as the university allowed members of the public onto its campus. Other libraries are also all-age-inclusive. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did Establishment of the Library Affect Publishing in the United States? With the establishment of the Copyright Office and Copyright Law, the library became the center of U.S. publishing in a way. It was and is the archive of the nation. Publishers have to send those two copies to the library, and the Copyright Office ensures that people's works are either not stolen, or the authors can seek legal remedies if the work is stolen. Copyright is what prevents people from simply taking an already published book and claiming it as their own, and it's a major source of protection for authors and creators. The familiar fox that is most common in legend and lore is the red fox, but there are over 30 species of fox living all over the world. Every fox belongs to the canine family, and they are ranked as the smallest of all canines. However, they have some characteristics different from other canines. Fanta Mountain Dew A&W Root Beer Mr. Pibb Answer: Fanta was invented in Nazi Germany during World War II due to a trade embargo on importing Coca-Cola syrup. The head of Coca-Cola Deutschland decided to create a new product for the German market during the war, using ingredients available in Germany at the time, including whey and apple pomace. They held a competition to name the new orange soda, saying “use your imagination”; the German translation of ‘imagination’, is ‘fantasie’ and in that moment a German salesman, Joe Knipp came up with the name Fanta. Members phkrause Posted April 26, 2017 Author Members Posted April 26, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Reason the Bowling Alley Was Built? To celebrate Truman’s 63rd birthday, a group of Missourians raised the money to build the two-lane bowling alley and have it installed in the West Wing of the White House. Truman was a card player, as he informed his future wife, Bess, in a letter he wrote to her in 1911. After his stint in the military and election as a judge, he was known to play poker with friends at a building across from the county courthouse. He carried his interest in poker playing to the White House, and his set of poker chips is on display at the Harry S. Truman Library. However, he did have a go at the new bowling alley after it was installed and on the first ball, rolled a seven. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Happened to the Space Used for the Original Bowling Alley? In 1955, during the Eisenhower administration, the bowling alley was moved across the street to the Executive Office Building because of a lack of space at the White House. The original bowling alley was converted into a mimeograph room. Today, the area that housed the bowling alley from the Truman administration serves as the Situation Room. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Which U.S. President Was the Most Avid Bowler? President Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, were both avid bowlers. In 1969, Nixon had a one-lane bowling alley installed in a workspace located under the driveway of the White House that leads to the North Portico. He paid for it himself, along with donations from friends. Rumor is that Nixon played 300 games in a row at one time, and although his scores were kept secret, his high score was 232. Nixon’s love of bowling was famous enough that a photo of him bowling appears in the movie, The Big Lebowski, hanging over Dude’s tiki bar. Lyndon Johnson was an occasional bowler, but it was Ladybird Johnson who often made use of the bowling alley, and in later years, George W. Bush bowled, along with his children. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Other Sports and Leisure Facilities are Located at the White House? The White House has had a number of other facilities for recreational activities installed over the years, in addition to the bowling alley. A tennis court was first installed in 1902. Franklin Roosevelt had a heated swimming pool installed in 1933. It was removed during Nixon’s administration and reinstalled as an outdoor pool in 1975 by Ford. In 1942, a movie theater was added in the East Wing. A game room with ping-pong and billiard tables was added in 1970. The jogging track was built during Clinton’s administration, and Eisenhower added a putting green. In 1966, a new practice green was installed on the south grounds. George H.W. Bush had a new tennis court and horseshoe pits added, along with a basketball court. Happy Days The Brady Bunch Mork & Mindy Shark Tank Answer: The phrase “jumping the shark” is based on a scene from a fifth-season episode of the sitcom Happy Days in which the character Fonzie jumps over a shark while on water-skis. This television moment has since become a Hollywood symbol of when screenwriting has deteriorated into absurdity. The show continued for a further seven years, but it’s widely accepted that this was the moment it began to derail from a quality standpoint. This shark stunt moment has also become a cultural symbol of when quality takes a dramatic downturn for the worse. A devout Presbyterian, as First Lady she banned dancing, card games, and hard liquor at the White House. When she attended the Inaugural Ball, she did not dance. Known as a strict “Sabbatarian,” kept her husband from conducting any official business on Sundays. She famously turned away a high-ranking Austrian official who came to meet the president on the Sabbath. Gender norms weren't the only barriers Lucille Ball broke. She and Desi Arnaz were also TV's first interracial couple. Producers felt Arnaz was "too ethnic," and that audiences wouldn't accept Lucy being married to someone who looked so "foreign." Which is funny since, ya know, they were married in real life. Lucy insisted Arnaz be her on-screen co-star, and to prove that audiences would like them together, they worked a skit into her husband's orchestra tour that summer showcasing the two of them working together onstage. Audiences loved them, the networks relented, and that skit was thrown into the show's sixth episode. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Fill in the Blank: Lucille Ball Was the First Woman to Run a ______. Lucille Ball didn't just create and star in I Love Lucy, she also ran the show's production company, making her the first woman to run a major TV studio. And Desilu Productions was pretty major. She was in charge of 2,000 employees, and when she finally sold it in 1967, it went for $17 million. Those would be 1967 dollars. And they didn't just put on her own show. Desilu Productions later produced the shows Star Trek and Mission Impossible among others. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did I Love Lucy Have a Priest, a Rabbi and a Minister on Set in Season Two? When Lucille Ball became pregnant in season two of I Love Lucy, the producers were worried about portraying the character as pregnant onscreen. Though her pregnancy would be tough to hide because, as Desi Arnaz put it when describing his wife's first pregnancy, "she got as big as a house when she was carrying Lucie." The network agreed to let Lucy become only the second actress to be visibly pregnant while starring in a TV series (Mary Kay on Mary Kay and Johnny was the first). One condition for making the character pregnant was that people onscreen couldn't say she was pregnant. They had to say she was "expecting." A second condition? A priest, a rabbi and a minister had to be onset for each episode to make sure the show's handling of the pregnancy wouldn't be offensive to any groups. And no, we're not joking. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: I Love Lucy Was the First Sitcom to Be Shot Using How Many Cameras? Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had another idea the studio wasn't crazy about: They wanted to shoot the whole show on film with three cameras instead of the then-standard one. CBS was worried about the added expense of extra cameras and redoing the stage and shooting process to accommodate them, so Desi Arnaz made an offer. The couple would take a cut in pay to offset the cost, but in return, they would retain ownership of the film, not the studio. The studio agreed, making I Love Lucy the first ever multi-cam sitcom (a distinction now common among sitcoms). Little did the execs know that I Love Lucy would become one of the most popular shows in rerun syndication history. And in the process, Lucy and her husband accomplished one more TV first: They became the first TV actors to become millionaires from their time onscreen. Denmark Algeria Belgium Egypt Egypt?? I think they might be the oldest country of these, not sure about having a flag?? Answer: The Flag of Denmark holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest continuously used national flag. The current design of a white Scandinavian cross on a red back ground was adopted in 1625 and its square shape in 1748. In Denmark it is known as the 'Dannebrog' or 'Danish cloth'. Although Denmark was never part of the Roman Empire, similar designs were used by the Empire to represent provinces, as the white cross is symbolic of Christianity. The cross design was later adopted by other Nordic countries such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Iceland. Kennedy's daughter, Caroline Kennedy, who was eleven years old at the time. Diamond sang the song to her at her 50th birthday celebration in 2007. In an interview on the CBS Early Show, Diamond said that a magazine cover photo of Caroline Kennedy as a young child on a horse with her parents in the background created an image in his mind, and the rest of the song came together about five years after seeing the picture. Members phkrause Posted April 28, 2017 Author Members Posted April 28, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Movie Inspired Hinckley to Shoot a US President? While living in Texas, Hinckley had become obsessed with the movie Taxi Driver, and, even more so with one of its stars: a young Jodi Foster. After several failed attempts to contact her, he decided to try to impress her by killing a U.S. President, apparently drawing inspiration from Robert De Niro's character in the film. Upon his arrest, Hinckley reportedly asked the officers if the news would disrupt the Academy Awards ceremony, scheduled for that night. The ceremony was indeed postponed until the following night, only the third time in history that the Oscars had failed to go ahead as scheduled. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Was Ronald Reagan the Only President Hinckley Tried to Shoot? Hinckley hatched his plan to shoot a US President before Reagan was even in office. And it now seems clear that his initial target was President Jimmy Carter. Hinckley visited Nashville while Carter was there on a campaign stop, but got detained at the airport when an X-ray indicated he had weapons in his suitcase. Carter left town for the next stop on his campaign before anything could happen, the arrest possibly having saved his life. Hinckley was eventually released, no one realizing until his attempt to kill Reagan why he had brought guns to Nashville that day. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Declared Himself in Charge After the President Was Shot? With the president down, the rest of the American leadership was in a panic. Many believed this was part of a larger Soviet plot and that the United States was under attack. With then-Vice-President George H.W. Bush still en route to the White House, Secretary of State Alexander Haig, a retired four-star general, went before the press and said the words for which he would be forever remembered: "Constitutionally gentlemen, you have the president, the vice president and the secretary of state, in that order, and should the president decide he wants to transfer the helm to the vice president, he will do so. As for now, I'm in control here, in the White House, pending the return of the vice president and in close touch with him." Of course, Haig wasn't in charge, and even if the Constitution did grant him the right to leapfrog the Vice President, the Speaker of the House would have been next in the order of succession. Haig has since stated that he wasn't attempting a coup d'etat, but rather was trying to reassure Americans, the press and the other members of the government who might have been worried that after the assassination attempt, there was no one actually in charge. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Whose Death Were Prosecutors Considering Charging Hinckley for? When James Brady - Reagan's Press Secretary who was shot that day - died last year, a medical examiner determined that Brady's death was a result of his being shot by Hinckley. Which meant, even though the death happened several decades after any shots were fired, prosecutors were considering charging Hinckley with Brady's murder. But on January 2nd of this year, prosecutors dropped the case. Hinckley remains in a psychiatric hospital to this day.
