Charlie Brown Mr. Magoo Scooby-Doo Felix the Cat Answer: Frank Sinatra was the inspiration behind our favorite crime-solving Great Dane’s name. The show was originally titled Mysteries Five and the dog who later became Scooby was originally named "Too Much". Both the dog and the series would be renamed Scooby-Doo by Fred Silverman, CBS's head of daytime programming. Silverman came up with the name from the syllables "doo-be-doo-be-doo" in Frank Sinatra's hit song "Strangers in the Night". And so Sinatra crooning "Scooby dooby doo" gave birth to one of most famous dogs in television history. The first and only president to be awarded the Medal of Honor was then Lt. Col. Teddy Roosevelt. He served in the U.S. Army, 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment during the Spanish-American War. On July 1, 1898, he led a charge up San Juan Hill with only four to five other soldiers accompanying him. He was the first soldier to reach the trenches of the enemy and killed one with his pistol. His actions encouraged the other soldiers to advance, and turn the tide of battle. For this, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and devotion to his duty. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was the First and Only President to Kill Someone in a Duel? In 1806, Andrew Jackson and the man he killed, Charles Dickinson, were both plantation owners and fellow horse breeders. However, they reportedly hated each other. Jackson was a lawyer at the time and supposedly argumentative and liked to use dueling as a way to solve an argument. When Dickinson accused Jackson of not paying off on a horse bet and then went on to say that Jackson’s wife was a bigamist (she did not know her previous marriage had not been finalized), Jackson issued a challenge to Dickinson to duel. Jackson was shot first near his heart. Placing his hand over the wound to slow the flow of blood, he took aim at Dickinson and fired. His first shot reportedly misfired, but he fired a second time, killing Dickinson. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was the Only President to Receive the Purple Heart? In 1944, John F. Kennedy was awarded a Purple Heart and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. In command of PT-109 in the Solomon Islands, a Japanese destroyer rammed into the boat. After crew members who survived the collision gathered together in the water, Kennedy took a vote from the men on whether to keep fighting or surrender. After voting to keep fighting, they swam toward an island. Kennedy towed one badly injured man by holding the strap of the man’s life jacket between his teeth and despite the fact that his bad back had been reinjured by the collision. When asked about becoming a war hero, he said “It was involuntary, they sank my boat.” 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was the First President to Hold a Patent? So far, Abraham Lincoln is the only president to have held a patent, and a model of it is on display at the Smithsonian Institution. Patent Number 6469 was assigned to Lincoln’s invention on May 22, 1849. Because boats became stranded on sandbars, he invented an apparatus designed to lift boats over the sandbars and other obstructions they might encounter. Although the invention received a patent, it was never used. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

From December 1934 to January 1935, the U.S. Treasury issued a $100,000 Gold Certificate, which was used only between different Federal Reserve banks. While it is considered legal tender, it hasn’t been in circulation since the 1960s and was never in circulation among the public. Wire transfers ended the use of the $100,000 banknote. Just a few of these banknotes are still in existence, and all are in the possession of the federal government. It is illegal for anyone in the private population to own one. The bill featured a picture of Woodrow Wilson. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Largest Currency in Size? The largest known currency comes from Yap, an island in the Pacific. Transported from the island of Palau, about 280 miles away, the stones were carved from limestone and called “rai.” The stones were made in different sizes from small to those weighing up to 8,000 pounds and 12 feet in diameter and had holes in the center for easier transport. The value of these stones not only depended upon size but upon whether any of the people retrieving them died during the trip back. Actual possession of one of these stones was less important than acknowledged ownership. Supposedly one lies at the bottom of the ocean after the canoe transporting it hit bad weather. This practice ended during the early part of the 19th century, but people of Yap still practice their traditions by exchanging rai. There are about 6,500 of these stones located around the island. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Flower Was Used as Currency? Tulip mania broke out in the 1600s among buyers of rare flowers who were wealthy or gentlemen botanists. Botanist Carolus Clusius added tulip bulbs to the garden he had established at the University of Leiden. While tulips were well known in central Asia, they were relatively unknown in the Netherlands in the late 1500s. Competition to create new hybrids resulted in a buying frenzy elsewhere in Europe. One connoisseur was offered an amount sufficient to purchase a townhouse in exchange for 10 bulbs of the Semper Augustus, a rare red and white striped tulip. He turned the offer down. By 1633, tulip bulbs were used to purchase properties. Around 1636 or 1637, the prices for tulip bulbs had gotten so high, the market collapsed. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Is the Oldest Known Coin in Existence? Mauna Loa Mount Vesuvius Mount St. Helens Mount Tambora I believe Mount Vesuvius? Answer: Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. That eruption ejected a cloud of stones, ash and fumes to a height of 20.5 miles, spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of 1.5 million tons per second, ultimately releasing a hundred thousand times the thermal energy released by the Hiroshima bombing. An estimated 16,000 people were killed in this eruption due to hydrothermal pyroclastic flows. Members phkrause Posted May 14, 2017 Author Members Posted May 14, 2017 On 5/12/2017 at 9:41 PM, phkrause said: Why Was the Injury Not Reported Earlier? t turned out not to be serious, physically. Of course, emotionally, it likely would have raised more alarm than anyone wanted. Pope John Paul II had been visiting the Portuguese city of Fatima, famous for its shrine, as part of a tour to give thanks for being alive. Almost one year earlier, on May 13, 1981, he had been shot and nearly died. On May 12, as the Pope was in Fatima Square, a man named Juan Maria Fernandez Krohn (also variously called Juan Fernandez Krohn and Juan Maria Fernandez y Krohn) tried to stab the pope with a bayonet. Fernandez was arrested and the pope rushed to safety. No one knew he'd actually been stabbed until he was away from the crowds. However, the injury was apparently not that bad -- bleeding, yes, but not enough to stop his tour. On 5/12/2017 at 9:41 PM, phkrause said: Why Did the Attack Take Place? Fernandez was a Spanish Catholic priest and lawyer who was part of a very conservative sect that thought all popes and reforms made after Pope Pius XII were illegitimate. His intent was to harm John Paul II to protest the changes enforced by the Catholic Church starting in 1965. He also thought John Paul II was a Soviet agent and accused the court of being full of Communists and puppets, as well as murderers, when he was convicted. On 5/12/2017 at 9:41 PM, phkrause said: What Happened to the Attacker? After his conviction, Fernandez served three years of a six-year term and was then deported from Portugal to Belgium. He left the priesthood (which was just as well given he nearly violated the sixth commandment). Not much else has been reported on his life, but what has been reported indicates he's still politically involved, to put it very, very lightly. In 2000, Fernandez was carted off by police as he tried to protest a visit by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain in Brussels. On 5/12/2017 at 9:41 PM, phkrause said: Why Was the News Finally Released? News of the injury didn't reach the public until 2008, when Pope John Paul II's former private secretary, Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz, took part in a documentary called "Testimony." The documentary focused on the pope's life, and the news came out as part of Dziwisz's interviews.
