Reportedly, the ceremony took under 15 minutes, and the couple was accompanied by a bodyguard and several lawyers. At the time of their marriage, Jackson was 35 and Presley 26 years old.

It was the first marriage for Jackson and the second for Presley. Her first marriage had been to Danny Keough, the musician, they had a son and daughter together. They were divorced after about six years, and she married Jackson 20 days following the divorce from her first husband. They had reportedly dated for about four months when he called her and proposed over the telephone. The couple stayed married for about two years, divorcing in 1996.

People argued that the bridge's clearance would prevent large ships from entering San Francisco Harbor, that if some enemy nation blew it up it could block off large fleets of US ships, that it would be vulnerable to earthquakes, that it would be an eyesore destroying the picturesque nature of San Francisco Harbor.  

But with opposition so fierce, the state and federal governments were hesitant to fund the project, only providing a small sum for the cause. Yup, they risked it all for the controversial structure even with the Great Depression in full swing. But thanks to bridge tolls, the investment has paid off. 11 people died working on the Golden Gate Bridge. Yet that was actually considered a good number for the time. Well that's not too far off from how they handled the color choice for the Golden Gate Bridge. Back in the '30s, bridges primarily came in one of three colors: Black, gray and silver. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified US soldier on a hilltop facing Washington DC in Arlington National Cemetery. President Harding oversaw the burial of the soldier later that year. A new post-wartime ceremony was born. The Unknown Soldiers from each war buried in that tomb are meant to symbolize all of the fallen Americans from their respective conflicts.

President Eisenhower was the next to hold the honor. He buried two unknowns: one selected from World War II and the other from the Korean War. Both were awarded the Medal of Honor and buried in a ceremony presided over by Eisenhower.
