Dedication Day Remembrance Day Decoration Day Reconciliation Day Remembrance Day?? Answer: Decoration Day is the former name of Memorial Day in the United States. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day in the immediate aftermath of the American Civil War. The preferred name for the holiday gradually changed from "Decoration Day" to "Memorial Day", which was first used in 1882. It did not become more common until after World War II, and was not declared the official name by Federal law until 1967. Memorial Day endures as a holiday which most businesses observe because it marks the unofficial beginning of summer. General John A. “Black Jack” Logan, who led the fraternal organization, Grand Army of the Republic, called for the establishment of this day of remembrance by issuing General Order No. 1. The GAR had been founded in 1866 for Northern Civil War veterans. Logan helped found the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and was elected as its second nationwide commander. The order itself called for decorating veterans’ graves or strewing flowers to remember those who fought and died during the Civil War and raising the flag in remembrance of their sacrifice. It was called Decoration Day and was celebrated on May 30. By 1890, 27 of the 42 states were observing Decoration Day. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: According to Congress, What Is the Official Birthplace of Memorial Day? Where did Memorial Day first start? We have no idea. Over 20 towns take the credit for giving the holiday its start. There's Boalsburg, Pennsylvania where women in 1864 mourned the deceased at Gettysburg. There's Carbondale, Illinois, where soldiers marched in honor of the fallen, a march capped off by a speech from General John Logan himself (the man generally thought of as the founder of the holiday). Heck, there's even two separate places named Columbus that claim to be the birthplace of the holiday. But when it came time for Congress to recognize an official birthplace of the holiday, they designated the small town of Waterloo, New York. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: By Law, at What Time on Memorial Day Are You Supposed to Remember Our Fallen Soldiers? In 2000, Congress passed the National Monument of Remembrance Act, dictating that you should pause at 3p.m. to remember the soldiers who have died. The story goes that someone got the idea when some children touring Washington D.C. were asked what Memorial Day is, and one child answered, "That's the day the pool opens." Realizing that people thought of it more as a day of barbecues, blockbuster movie releases and, apparently, pool openings than a day to honor the soldiers who died for our country, Congress decided to pass a law specifically reminding us what the holiday is all about. They chose that time because it's when they felt Americans were most enjoying the freedom provided by those soldiers who died defending our country. Of course, the law hasn't done all that much to change our behavior. There'll probably be more people eating hotdogs than observing a moment of silence at 3p.m. across the country today, but hey, what's a more American freedom to celebrate than that one? 19 hours ago, phkrause said: When Was the Name Changed to Memorial Day? As early as the 1880s, people started referring to the commemorative day as Memorial Day. In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act moved Memorial Day to the final Monday in May. The move was objected to by some veterans groups because they believed this three-day holiday would be used less for honoring veterans than for celebrating the long weekend that heralded summer. A U.S. Senator from Hawaii, Daniel Inouye, championed changing the date back to May 30 for over 20 years, until he died in 2012. Indianapolis 312 Indianapolis 677 Indianapolis 805 Indianapolis 1022 805 Answer: There are 804.672 kilometers in 500 miles. To convert any value in miles to kilometers, just multiply the value in miles by the conversion factor 1.609344. So, 500 miles times 1.609344 is equal to 804.672 kilometers. The Indianapolis 500 is held over Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) weekend. The event, billed as The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, is considered part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport, which comprises three of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world. However, instead of displaying an image of its Volkswagen Beetle it featured the U.S. Lunar Module, the first of many lunar excursion modules to land on the Moon. Clever considering the ad used one of the greatest feats in human history to catch consumers' eyes but also came across as so honest as at that time Volkswagens were considered eyesores. The ad campaign resonated with car buyers and propelled sales of Volkswagen through the roof. Members phkrause Posted May 31, 2017 Author Members Posted May 31, 2017 15 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did the 100 Years War Begin? If a hundred-year long war seems a bit excessive to you, know that it was a long-time coming (and that it was actually more like 116 years from start to finish). Since the Norman Conquest in 1066, England had been tied to its neighbor to the East. England had French kings, their noble class spoke French. The two countries were inextricably linked. Then, in 1328, King Charles the IV died and that’s when things started to get messy. The short summary of what happened goes as follows: England and France were constantly at each other’s throats about small plots of land in France where the English had laid claim. In 1337, King Philip VI took Gastony - a small region in southern France - from King Edward III of England. Edward responded by basically saying he was the rightful heir (after the death of Charles the IV) of both England and France. Obviously, that didn’t sit well with King Philip, and a war broke out between the two countries that would forever change their relationship. 15 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was Joan of Arc? Fast forward 90 years. A young girl from a small town in northeastern France demands to hold court with King Charles VII because she had visions telling her that she was meant to be the savior of France. Charles was reasonably skeptical that a 15-year-old girl from a tiny village had any divine power. So, he put her to the test by disguising himself as a member of his own court. Joan had never seen the King before and knew nothing of what he looked like. Despite that, she walked in and immediately bowed at his feet. Later, Charles claimed that Joan had repeated things he’d only said silently in prayer to God. That was enough to gain his trust, and so he provided her with armor and a horse and at 17 years old, Joan of Arc joined the army to the frontlines of Orléans. Over the course of a month, the army at Orléans defeated the English with Joan at the helm. The victory instilled confidence in the French people and helped regain major territorial losses. It also gave Joan even more credibility with King Charles. 15 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was Joan of Arc Executed? After Orléans, King Charles sent Joan to Compiègne to take on a Burgundian assault. During the battle, she was captured by the Burgundians, who eventually sold her to the English for 10,000 francs. Joan of Arc was tried on counts of witchcraft, heresy and - the most ridiculous of all - dressing like a man. After weeks of intense interrogation and threats, she was convicted on May 29, 1431, and burned at the stake the next day. She was 19 years old. 15 hours ago, phkrause said: When Did She Become the Patron Saint of France? In 1920, nearly 500 years after her death, the Roman Catholic Church canonized Joan of Arc, making her the patron saint of France. The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, Isaac Morley, George Washington Bradley and numerous other Mormon followers, who extensively irrigated and cultivated the arid valley. Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was originally named "Great Salt Lake City"—the word "great" was dropped from the official name in 1868 by the 17th Utah Territorial Legislature. He told them that former CIA agent and Nixon staff member Howard Hunt was involved in the Watergate scandal. The evidence eventually led to President Nixon’s resignation in August 1974. Members phkrause Posted June 2, 2017 Author Members Posted June 2, 2017 On 5/31/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: What's Big Ben's Official Name? The massive bell in the tower at the Houses of Parliament is officially known as the Great Bell, appropriate enough for a bell that weighs 13.5 tons but not particularly imaginative. The bell's other statistics are equally impressive. It's 7.5 feet tall and 9 feet in diameter. Two theories offer plausible explanations for the bell's nickname of Big Ben. The first, and most widely accepted, holds that the bell is named for Welsh civil engineer Sir Benjamin Hall. He served as the United Kingdom's First Commissioner of Works and Public Buildings and oversaw the latter stages of the reconstruction of the Houses of Parliament, which had been destroyed in an 1834 fire. The second theory suggests that the huge bell was named for Ben Caunt, a large bare-knuckle boxer popular in that era. On 5/31/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: What Happened to the First Bell Made for the Clock Tower? The original bell, cast by workers at the bell foundry of John Warner & Sons in August 1856, was even bigger than Big Ben, weighing in at 16 tons. Ready well before the completion of the tower, the bell was temporarily installed in the New Palace Yard, which was located just north of the Palace of Westminster, the official name for the structure housing Parliament. During testing, a crack nearly 4 feet in length, appeared in the bell. The bell was determined to be beyond repair, and a new bell -- 2.5 tons lighter than the first -- was commissioned to replace it. Two months after Big Ben first rang out over the streets of London, a crack appeared in the new bell. The crack was blamed on the use of a hammer (clapper) roughly twice as large as it should have been. Although this crack was never repaired, a new, lighter hammer was fabricated and installed. The bell was rotated so that the hammer struck a different part of the bell, which was reinforced with the addition of part of the bell's rim chipped out for just that purpose. On 5/31/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: What's the New Name of Big Ben's Clock Tower? In June 2012, the towering belfry housing Big Ben above the Palace of Westminster was renamed Elizabeth Tower to mark the British monarch's 60th year on the throne. Simply -- and uninspiringly -- called Clock Tower for more than 150 years, the structure now has a new name. However, for locals and tourists alike, the name Big Ben has long been used to refer not only to the Great Bell, but to the clock and its tower as well. It's doubtful that this official rechristening of the tower will do much to change that. On 5/31/2017 at 5:14 PM, phkrause said: How Did Big Ben Fare During World War II's Blitz? Big Ben's home in west-central London was not a prime target for Nazi bombers who instead sought to destroy the factories, docks, and other strategic sites in the city's East End. However, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament didn't escape the war unscathed. In May 1941, an incendiary bomb destroyed the House of Commons chambers, and another bomb struck the tower, but damage was confined to its south-facing side. The glass on the clock's face was broken, and a portion of the tower's roof above the clock face was damaged. The bell and clock mechanisms were undamaged. Red Vines Warheads Pop Rocks Atomic Fireball Answer: Pop Rocks are the brainchild of William A. Mitchell, a research chemist who worked for General Foods for 35 years. Pop Rocks are basically just sugar gasified with carbon dioxide. When they come into contact with moisture, the candy part dissolves and the gas is released, kicking off a fizzy reaction. Rumors persisted that eating Pop Rocks and drinking soda would cause a person's stomach to explode. General Foods set up a hotline, took out ads in 45 newspapers, and sent their inventor out on a speaking tour to explain that the candy was safe.
