Answer: “Can you hear me now?” was one of the most recognized commercials and lines on American television. Actor, Paul Marcarelli was the face and voice behind the line and was the actor in all of the Verizon Wireless commercials. Marcarelli played a technician whose job was to verify the quality of Verizon's network in all sorts of wayward locations. We say ‘was’ because Verizon is no longer in contract with him, as they decided to go in a new direction with their advertisement. So what did Paul do? He signed a contract with Sprint, Verizon’s competitor.

No, in fact, Spielberg originally began writing the film as a horror story about an alien who terrorized a family in their home. Titled Night Skies, the script was intended to be a follow-up to Spielberg’s blockbuster, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. 

Obviously, that never happened, but instead we got two classic Spielberg productions from the origins of the one Night Skies script. Spielberg combined the alien piece with his own childhood to create E.T. and used the horror elements to flesh out a script for what would later become Poltergeist.

Reese’s Pieces of course. But it wasn’t always going to be that way. The script originally called for ET to be tempted by M&M’s. When approached for the right to use them in the film, Mars Incorporated declined to be involved in the project. So, Universal Pictures approached the Hershey Company, who agreed to spend $1 million for the rights to promote their newest creation, Reese’s Pieces.  The agreement ultimately paid off for Hershey, as the company reported a 65 percent increase in profits on Reese's Pieces just two weeks after the film premiere.

Casting kids is no easy task, so when Spielberg got a recommendation for a young man named Henry Thomas from friend and fellow director, Jack Fisk, he brought him in. But, instead of a traditional audition with a scripted scene, Spielberg decided to try something new to test whether the boy could really hold his own in the leading role.  With only some basic information about the scene (NASA had come to take E.T. away from Elliott), Henry improvised the entire scene, even going so far as to burst into tears. The audition was so outstanding, that when the scene wrapped, Spielberg immediately pronounced, “OK kid, you got the job.” You can watch the audition in its entirety here.

Carlo Rimbaldi is responsible for the designing the look of E.T. He took inspiration from one of his own paintings, titled “Women of Delta,” which depicted a small, worn down character with a long neck and large face. Rimbaldi took that form and meshed it with images of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, Carl Sandburg and a pug to create the model of E.T. in clay. Harrison Ford was then dating (and later married to) E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison, and agreed to shoot a cameo for her and his friend Steven Spielberg.  The filmmaker cast his Raiders of the Lost Ark star as the principal of Elliott’s school. Ford reprimands the youngster after the scene where Elliott frees all of the frogs about to be dissected. The scene didn't add much to the movie, and Ford's presence seemed to be more of a distraction than anything else.  The scene was ultimately cut for time.

The diary you read in school is actually a mix of two different volumes -- and Frank wrote even more than those. Frank started out with the one diary, which was really an autograph book, but it worked well for daily musings, too. In 1944, Frank was able to listen to a speech by a Dutch official who had fled to London, and he asked that anyone keeping records or journals try their best to preserve them. At that point, Anne actually started to rewrite her diary to make the entries neater and more official. After the war, Otto Frank, her father, combined the two different versions into the book that people read today. 

Anne Frank was a ferocious writer and an intense girl. Her friends recalled her as always writing, and that continued as she went into hiding. She had a couple of other volumes of books, one for stories she wrote and one for quotes that she liked to collect and muse upon.

The Dutch people who had helped hide the family found the writings when they searched the secret apartment. Miep Gies, one of the Franks' close Dutch friends and a member of the group who helped hide the Franks, held onto the writings and gave them to Otto Frank when he returned to Amsterdam. There were a total of five volumes and several loose pages, but only the composite diary was published. Anne's sister Margot apparently had a diary, too, but that was never recovered.

The original version of the published diary was missing five pages, and for years, no one knew what they contained. In 1999, a friend of Otto Frank's provided the pages. They also contained a lot of insight into the marriage between Otto Frank and Anne's mother, and Otto Frank wanted to keep such personal information out of the public eye. Current published versions (since 1999) of the diary now contain those pages.

None of these! Ice water can freeze tissue, causing further damage. Butter and other fatty oils can slow heat release, and caking on flour has the same effect. It's best to stick with cool water to flush the burn and cool it.

Answer: Jim Heselden was a British entrepreneur who owned Segway Inc., maker of the Segway personal transport system. Heselden died in 2010 after falling off a cliff while riding his own product. The multi-millionaire businessman plunged 80 feet into the River Wharfe while inspecting the grounds of his estate on his Segway. The Segway is a motorized scooter which use gyroscopes to remain upright and is controlled by the direction in which the rider leans. A Segway vehicle was recovered and Heselden was pronounced dead at the scene.

It all goes back to 1963 and a case against Ernesto Miranda, who was suspected of having kidnapped and raped a mentally disabled 19-year-old woman, after driving her into the desert. Following several hours of interrogation, Miranda confessed and signed a statement admitting to the crime, even though the girl’s testimony was the only evidence against him.

Miranda’s lawyer objected to the written confession during the trial, saying that Miranda did not know his rights and that he was not required to say anything without an attorney and that anything he did say was admissible as evidence. Miranda’s lawyer called no witnesses to the stand to testify on his behalf. However, the judge overruled the lawyer’s objection. Miranda was subsequently convicted of kidnapping and rape. He received a sentence of 20 to 30 years for each charge, to be served concurrently.

A legal precedent had been set by the case Escobedo v. Illinois in 1964. In this case, it was established that suspects of a crime not only had the right to a lawyer during trial but also during interrogation by law enforcement officials. Attorneys with the Arizona ACLU took up the case of Ernesto Miranda and arranged with a Phoenix law firm to argue his case in front of the Supreme Court pro bono. Their argument was Miranda was coerced into a false confession.

They also argued that the case violated his Sixth and Fifth Amendment rights, his right to counsel and right to not incriminate himself. Although Miranda had lost the case presented by his attorney before the Arizona Supreme Court, his conviction was overturned in the U.S. Supreme Court by a vote of five to four.

Miranda was tried again in Arizona in early 1967 and convicted, primarily based on the testimony of his former common-law wife, Twila Hoffman. He was incarcerated at Arizona State Prison until his parole in 1975. After going to a Phoenix bar in January 1976, he was involved in a bar fight where he was stabbed twice, once in the chest and again in the stomach.

He died in the ambulance that was rushing him to Good Samaritan Hospital. Although police searched for the man who stabbed Miranda, when they went to the hotel he was staying in, it was discovered that he had checked out. The police assumed that he had fled.

Answer: Caesar Cardini invented the Cesar Salad in 1924 in Tijuana, Mexico. Cardini owned a restaurant in the tourist destination to “attract Americans frustrated by Prohibition.” The original recipe included “romaine, garlic, croutons, and Parmesan cheese, boiled eggs, olive oil and Worcestershire sauce.” Supposedly Cardini’s brother, Alex, came to Tijuana in 1926 and added anchovies to the salad. The new version was so well-received that it became the new standard. People gradually began referring to it as “Caesar’s salad”, as it came from Caesar’s restaurant.
