Harry Potter Batman Santa Claus Kermit the Frog Answer: In southeastern Turkey there is an oil producing city named Batman. Batman, Turkey, made world news in 2008 when its mayor, Huseyin Kalkan, announced he was planning lawsuits against Warner Bros. and director Christopher Nolan, makers of the Dark Knight movie trilogy. “There is only one Batman in the world," he told reporters. "The American producers used the name of our city without informing us." He seemed unconcerned by the fact that the first Batman comics appeared in early 1939, almost two decades before his city began to use the name. Kennedy Paul McCartney Richard Nixon Martin Luther King Jr. JFK Answer: On June 26, 1963, President John F. Kennedy gave his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” ("I am a Berliner") speech in West Berlin. Kennedy used the line twice that day in a historic speech in West Berlin, which was then separated from communist-controlled East Berlin by the Berlin Wall. His intention was to express his solidarity with the people there, by symbolically calling himself a citizen of Berlin. It was a great morale boost for West Berliners, who lived in an enclave deep inside East Germany and feared a possible East German occupation. Meet the Press specializes in interviews with national leaders and panel discussions that provide opinions and analysis. The longevity of Meet the Press can be illustrated by the fact that it debuted during what was only the second official "network television season" for American television. One historical landmark of the program is that it was the first on which a sitting U.S. President, Gerald Ford, appeared on a live television network news program. Members phkrause Posted June 28, 2017 Author Members Posted June 28, 2017 17 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Atari’s First Console? Shortly after launching the new joint venture, Bushnell and Dabney brought their arcade game console - Pong - to market. The simple game met the criteria for what would later be called “Bushnell’s Law” - the idea that games should be easy to learn but difficult to master. If you haven’t played Pong before, it’s essentially table tennis that increases in difficulty the further you make it in the game (a touch added by Bushnell himself). The game was a big commercial success and is generally credited with launching the video game industry. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: How Much Did Bushnell and Dabney Invest When They Founded Atari? Apparently, back in 1972, it didn't cost much to found a video game company. Founders Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney invested a whopping $500 to get things started. Within a few years, the company was sold to Warner Communications for $28 million. That investment itself turned out to be peanuts for a company that within another five years would earn $2 billion in sales and account for half of Warner's revenue. Not a bad return for a few hundred bucks. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: What Atari Employee Was So Unpleasant and Had Such Bad Hygiene That He Was Moved to the Night Shift? One day, Al Acorn received a message. He said, "I was told, 'We've got a hippie kid in the lobby. He says he's not going to leave until we hire him. Should we call the cops or let him in?' I said bring him on in!" That kid was apparently a royal pain in the you-know-what to work with and had a habit of not showering, but he also had passion up the wazoo. That kid's name? Steve Jobs. Jobs became friends with a couple of other Atari employees: Ron Wayne and Steve Wozniak. Together, the three men founded Apple Computer on April 1, 1976. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: Thousands of Copies of an Atari Game Based on What Hit Movie Were Recently Found in a New Mexico Landfill? By the time Atari was done, they had developed a reputation for shoddy, rushed work, and perhaps the most famous example of this was an adaptation of E.T. supposedly made in only a few weeks and that was barely even functional. For years, there was an urban legend that thousands of unsold copies of the failed game were buried somewhere in a New Mexico landfill. An urban legend only made more appealing by the fact that it was a story about an alien-related video game only a few hours from Roswell itself. But was it true? No one knew until recently, when a team of documentarians making a movie about Atari dug up the landfill. The movie's director, Zak Penn, said he didn't think people would much care about the Atari dig, let alone actually show up to watch it. "I thought it would be 60 hipsters just sneering at this all ironically, but we got hundreds of people excited for the discovery," he said. People showed up in costume and with consoles ready to play the game. Hey, even if they knew the game would be terrible (according to reports, it was), it was still a chance to see a part of video game history. Bill Gates Mark Zuckerberg Michael Dell Jeff Bezos Answer: Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon, is one of the most powerful figures in tech, with a net worth of roughly $85 billion. Bezos made headlines on August 5, 2013, when he purchased The Washington Post for $250 million in cash. Since the purchase, its readership has exploded, and its content has become more suitable for the digital world. Bezos was also one of the first investors in Google, investing $250,000 in 1998. That $250,000 investment resulted in 3.3 million shares of Google stock worth about $3.1 billion today. Answer: The Scarecrow is a fictional character invented by L. Frank Baum, author and creator of the Oz legacy. In his first appearance, the Scarecrow reveals that he lacks a brain and desires above all else to have one. The "mindless" Scarecrow joins Dorothy in the hope that The Wizard will give him one. The 1939 film won two Academy Awards, and was nominated for Best Picture of the Year. In the film Dorothy meets a Tin Man, a Scarecrow, and a Cowardly Lion, who lament to her that they respectively lack a heart, a brain, and courage. Members phkrause Posted June 29, 2017 Author Members Posted June 29, 2017 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Won the First Time Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield Fought? Tyson and Holyfield fought once before eargate, back in 1996. Holyfield had spent the previous few years becoming a trained assassin in the boxing ring, Tyson had spent the previous few years in prison. We don't know which makes for a scarier fighter. After getting out of prison, Tyson had won all four fights he participated in and taken the WBC and WBA titles, both by knockout. He was at one point a 25-1 favorite over Holyfield, which is roughly the odds you might lay a plate of lasagna in front of Garfield. People were actually worried it was unsafe for Holyfield to fight. Turns out they were wrong to worry (or preemptively right if you want to count the rematch), as Holyfield ended up winning in 11 rounds. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Was Holyfield Doing Anything That Merited a Good Ear Chomping? If someone told you that one guy bit the ear off of another in a boxing match, your natural reaction would be, "Wow, that first guy is crazy." Which would be a really fair reaction. Especially if that guy just got out of prison. But it doesn't tell the whole story. Holyfield was beating up Tyson pretty badly. And we're not just talking about punching. Most people agree that Holyfield was also headbutting Tyson. For those of you who aren't boxing aficionados, we should explain that in boxing you're supposed to use the fists, not the head. In a Sports Illustrated story, Tyson said Holyfield, "must have butted me 15 times." Though we should point out we can't be sure about this number since Tyson a) is biased and was getting hit in the head a lot at the time. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: How Many Times Did Tyson Bite Holyfield's Ear? Before their rematch, Mike Tyson's former trainer, Teddy Atlas, speculated that the overmatched Tyson would do something to get disqualified so that his defeat wouldn't go in the record books as a loss. Seems Atlas was right. Partway through the second round, Tyson famously bit off part of Evander Holyfield's ear. But if you think that got him thrown out, then you don't know boxing. Tyson was deducted a whopping two points and then THE FIGHT KEPT GOING. So a round later, Tyson bit Holyfield's other ear. And that's when the ref figured he'd better call this thing. It worked for Tyson, the match did not go down as a loss. When announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. read the decision he said, "Referee Mills Lane has disqualified Mike Tyson for biting Evander Holyfield on both of his ears." We are pretty sure this is the only such decision in boxing history. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What Did the Hollywood Wax Museum Do with Mike Tyson's Statue After the Incident? After the fight, Mike Tyson's statue was removed from the sports section of the Hollywood Wax Museum and placed in the "Chamber of Horrors," next to none other than famed people-eater Hannibal Lecter from "Silence of the Lambs." The museum issued a statement in which they said they thought it would "bring an ear-to-ear smile" to people who visited the museum, which is a little bit much. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Whose Hot Sauce Was Promoted As Going Great On Human Ear? A couple years ago, Evander Holyfield came out with his own line of hot sauce and promoted it by tweeting "will make u wanna take a bite out of someone's ear! Ask @MikeTyson - Luv ya bro!" To which Mike Tyson responded, ".@holyfield's ear would've been much better with his new BBQ sauce" and then linked to the sauce's website. So apparently it's true what they say: Time heals all wounds. Even the kind of wound that leaves part of your ear on the boxing ring canvas. Broadway Wallstreet Baseball Hollywood Answer: Long before President Obama nominated Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court, she was known as the woman who saved baseball. In 1994, the World Series was cancelled due to an ongoing strike by the Major League Baseball Players Association. When the owners announced their intent to begin the 1995 season with replacement players, the union sued, and the case ended up before Sotomayor. Sotomayor ruled in favor of the players, thereby allowing the baseball season to start. Her ruling ended the 1994 baseball strike after 232 days. Madoff was arrested by FBI agents at his apartment in New York on a single count of securities fraud. A conviction on this one count carried penalties of up to $5 million and a 20-year prison term. When confronted, Madoff admitted he had been paying his investors with money that did not exist. Separate charges were filed against him by the Securities and Exchange Commission. In court, he pled guilty to all the charges. There were 11 in total for securities fraud, mail and wire fraud, investment advisor fraud, three separate counts of money laundering, perjury, making false statements, making falsified filings with the SEC and theft with regard to an employee benefit plan. Financier Bernard Madoff received a 150-year sentence for his multibillion-dollar fraud. Madoff was 70 years old at the time. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Were Some Of His Celebrity Clients That Lost Money? Madoff pulled off one of the largest Ponzi scheme in history. Some of his clients were among the largest companies in the world, including banks and insurance companies. Federal investigators believed that his Ponzi scheme had been going on for years. Among celebrities who reportedly lost money because of the scam were Steven Spielberg through his Wunderkinder Foundation, Kevin Bacon and his wife, Kyra Sedgwick, baseball legend Sandy Koufax, Zsa Zsa Gabor, and John Malkovich, who said the scheme ruined him. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Turned in Madoff to the FBI? After Madoff revealed what he had been doing to his family, his two sons, Andrew and Mark, turned him in. His son, Mark, committed suicide two years later on the anniversary of his father’s arrest on December 11, 2010, by using a dog leash to hang himself. Both brothers had borrowed millions of dollars from their father over the years. Andrew Madoff died in 2014 at age 48 from mantle cell lymphoma. They were the Madoff’s only children. Both of them had worked at their father’s securities firm but denied any knowledge of the scheme. 22 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was the Ponzi Scheme Named After? The name first appeared in 1919 and was named after Charles Ponzi. At the time, when people went to the post office, they could buy postage ahead of time and send it along with the letter or package. The person who received it could exchange it for airmail stamps. Since prices for postage stamps fluctuated, it could cost a lot more to send mail from some countries. Ponzi’s scheme was to buy cheap “reply coupons” from different countries and trade them for stamps that were worth more. Then when he sold the stamps, he made a profit off the sale. It wasn’t illegal, and he set up a company called the Securities Exchange Company and sought investors. However, in his greed, he promised a huge profit to investors of 50 percent within 45 days or 100 percent within 90 days. Ponzi never reinvested the money. He redistributed it. That way, the investors thought they had actually profited. An investigation of the company caught up with his shady practices in 1920. He faced 86 counts for mail fraud and pleaded guilty to one. Ponzi completed less than four years of his five-year sentence. After facing charges from other states and serving more jail time, he was finally deported back to Italy from the United States but moved on to Brazil.
