Peru China South Africa United States Answer: China is the world’s top gold-producing country, and has held that position for the last 10 years in a row. In addition to being the top producer of gold, China is also the world’s largest gold consumer, and has been for four straight years, according to the World Gold Council. For many years until 2006, South Africa was the world's dominant gold producer, but other countries with large surface area have since surpassed South Africa, including China, Russia, Canada, Peru, Australia and the United States. As Walter Mondale was trying to settle on a vice-presidential running mate, he came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to make the ticket more inclusive. He had been advised to pick U.S. Senator Gary Hart, a competitor for the '84 Democratic nomination, but Mondale was not enthused. Mondale became more open to the idea of a woman as a running mate, and he found a lot of support for that idea from others as well. Even House Speaker Tip O'Neill confirmed that Ferraro was the best choice for Mondale's campaign. Mondale admitted later in his book, The Good Fight: A Life in Liberal Politics, that the choice was partly symbolic, but that it was also a practical choice that would show the public how effective a woman could be in a position of leadership. 10 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did the Mondale-Ferraro Ticket Fare in the 1984 Election? In one of the more uneven contests in the history of American presidential elections, Mondale and Ferraro managed to win the popular vote in only one of the 50 states. Their opponents, the popular incumbents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, received 525 electoral votes, the highest total for any president in U.S. history. Mondale-Ferraro's lone victory in Minnesota, together with the electoral college votes of the District of Columbia, netted the Democrats a grand total of only 13 electoral votes. And the Democratic ticket's victory in Minnesota came with a paper-thin margin of less than 4,000 votes. 10 hours ago, phkrause said: How and When Did Ferraro Die? Ferraro remained in Congress until 1985; twice after that, in 1992 and 1998, she ran for a Senate seat but lost. She then served on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights for the remainder of the Clinton administration. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 1998, Ferraro spent much of the final years of her life pushing for expanded cancer research. Thanks to new drug therapies and a 2005 bone marrow transplant, she defied the odds and survived more than twice as long as her doctors predicted, finally succumbing to her illness on March 26, 2011. Ferraro's daughter, Donna Zaccaro, released a documentary in 2014 about the 1984 campaign, called Geraldine Ferraro: Paving the Way. 10 hours ago, phkrause said: What Impact Did Ferraro Have on Women in Politics? Ferraro wasn't just a footnote or an anomaly. Not only had women's participation in U.S. politics been growing substantially over the past century -- Ferraro herself had been in Congress, and she was by no means the first woman to reach the representative level -- but Ferraro also opened the way in people's minds for women to be on major party tickets. It's important to distinguish between major party and any party; anyone can declare a run for an office if they meet the legal requirements, but there is a world of difference between just declaring and actually having a viable chance of getting into office. That second situation means that people accept the idea of that candidate being in office and running a city, county, state, or country. Ferraro's candidacy, despite the loss, broke that barrier. While the only major-party nominees since Ferraro have been Sarah Palin for the Republican vice-presidential campaign in 2008 and Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential campaign in 2016 (Jill Stein ran for president in 2016 on the Green Party ticket, but you could argue that she and the Greens never had a chance of winning, so she would not really be considered a major-ticket nominee), the increasing numbers of women trying to run, including the relatively large field of candidates for the 2016 elections before the final tickets were announced, show an acceptance that one day will result in the United States having a president who is a woman. IBM Verizon Apple General Electric I'm guessing either IBM or General Electric!! Answer: “Think different." was an advertising slogan for Apple, introduced in 1997. The slogan has been widely taken as a response to IBM's slogan "Think". On August 8, 1997, at Macworld Expo, Steve Jobs introduced Apple’s newest slogan, “Think different” to reassure fans that Apple was once again making products customers are going to love. It was used in television commercials, print advertisements, and a number of TV promos for Apple products. Apple's use of the slogan was discontinued with the start of the iMac G4 in 2002. Members phkrause Posted July 14, 2017 Author Members Posted July 14, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was the Sign Erected? It was an advertising gimmick used by a real estate company to promote a new subdivision. When Harry Chandler, the publisher of the Los Angeles Times, decided to invest in the subdivision, he and the other partners in the project put up the cash to erect the sign. It cost them $21,000, which would be more than $250,000 in today’s economy. The completed sign was 45-feet tall and made of white letters in block print that were attached to phone poles. About 4,000 lights illuminated the sign, and the lights flashed in stages. The first stage lit up the letters “Holly,” the second stage lit up “wood,” the third lit up “land,” and the last stage lit up the entire sign. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did the Sign Stand Up Over the Years? It didn’t. During the Great Depression, maintenance of the sign was stopped, and the housing development the sign was designed for went under. Damage over time caused the “H” to topple over, and the sign ended up saying “ollywood.” The city became the owner of the sign sometime in the 1940s and wanted to tear it down. However, the Chamber of Commerce in Hollywood objected. The sign was restored in 1949, and the final four letters removed. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Did an Actress Really Commit Suicide at the Sign? Peg Entwistle had appeared in Broadway shows in New York during the 20s and early 30s when she decided to take the big leap to Hollywood to try to become a movie star. She did get cast in a role in Thirteen Women produced by David Selznick. It starred Myrna Loy and Irene Dunne, two screen stars of the era. However, the part in which Entwistle appeared was cut out of the film, and she was released from her contract. The movie was released to the public on September 16, 1932. That same night, Entwistle climbed to the top of the letter ‘H’ in the Hollywood sign by using an electrician’s ladder and jumped to her death. Her body was found downhill from the sign in a ravine. The reason for her death cited by newspapers at the time was because her career failed. Just before her death, she had ironically been offered a role in a theatrical production about a woman who kills herself. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Is the Current Hollywood Sign the Original? Despite a 1949 restoration, the Hollywood sign eventually began to deteriorate once again. The third “O,” for example, tumbled down the side of Mount Lee, and arsonists set fire to the bottom of the second “L.” In 1978, Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner held a gala at his mansion, where he and eight other donors, including rock musician Alice Cooper, pledged nearly $28,000 each to fund a replacement. After a three-month period without a sign, construction finished up later that year. The new sign was the same size as the old one, but with structural improvements such as steel footings rather than telephone poles. Ben-Hur The Last Emperor Gandhi The Ten Commandments Answer: The Guinness Book of World Records lists the 1982 classic film “Gandhi” as the movie having the most extras in a scene. The scene was Gandhi’s funeral where approximately 300,000 extras were present. 200,000 of which were volunteers and the rest were paid a fee (the going rate was from 15 to a 100 rupees, depending on the role). Almost all of India wanted to be part of the movie. The scene was shot on January 31, 1981, the 33rd anniversary of Gandhi’s death, which explains the deluge of volunteers. Jesse James Billy the Kid Buffalo Bill Cody Clyde Barrow Answer: On this day in 1881, William Henry McCarty—better known by the alias Billy the Kid was shot dead by Sheriff Pat Garrett in Fort Sumner, New Mexico. Garrett, had been tracking Billy the Kid for three months after the gunslinger had escaped from prison only days before his scheduled execution. Shortly after the shooting, Sheriff Garrett wrote a biography of McCarty, the hugely sensationalized The Authentic Life of Billy, the Kid. The book was the first of many accounts that would turn the young outlaw into a legend of the American frontier. Members phkrause Posted July 15, 2017 Author Members Posted July 15, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What was Gerald Ford’s Birth Name? Believe it or not, for the first two and a half years of his life, Gerald Ford was not “Gerald Ford,” but rather Leslie Lynch King, Jr. Ford’s mother, Dorothy Gardner, left his abusive father just 16 days after their son was born. She moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan where she married a paint salesman named Gerald Rudolff Ford. From then on, Leslie took on the name of his stepfather, despite having never been adopted and having not legally changed his name until December 3, 1935. In adulthood, Ford reflected positively on his life growing up in Grand Rapids with his mom, stepdad, and three half-brothers. He did not know his biological father until he was 17 years-old, and they maintained only sporadic contact until his father’s death in 1941. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Makes Him Unique as a U.S. President? Gerald Ford is the only non-elected president or vice president in U.S. history to take office. At the time of the Watergate scandal in 1972, Ford was the House Minority Leader. He first shifted into the role of vice president in 1973 after sitting VP, Spiro Agnew, resigned among tax evasion and money laundering charges. As investigations mounted further evidence against Nixon and impeachment began to seem a foregone conclusion, Nixon resigned his presidency before Ford had even the chance to move his family to D.C. On August 9, 1974, Nixon resigned, making Ford the first man to sit in the oval office without having been voted into either the presidency or vice presidency. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What is He Remembered for as President? Ford served from 1974 to 1977 and oversaw a difficult time in American history. The Vietnam War effectively came to a close nine months into his presidency and the country was undergoing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. And while Ford was pretty well-liked among fellow politicians, it’s likely one of the biggest memories people will hold of his presidency was the pardoning of Richard Nixon. Among much controversy, Ford pardoned Nixon less than a month into his presidency. His decision to grant a full and absolute pardon to Richard Nixon stunned and angered much of the nation. Yet Ford always believed the decision was right, even though it likely contributed to a generally unfavorable assessment of his presidency and helped cost him reelection in 1976, when he was defeated by Jimmy Carter. Carter’s defeat of Ford in 1976 also gave Ford the record of the shortest presidency by someone who did not die while holding office. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: How Old Was He When He Died? Ford holds one additional title: he lived longer than any U.S. president to date. When Ford passed on December 26, 2006, he was 93 years-old. On December 30, 2006, Ford became the 11th U.S. President to lie in state. A state funeral and memorial services was held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on January 2, 2007. After the service, Ford was interred at his Presidential Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The song is best known as the opening theme music for The Sopranos, which used the "Chosen One Mix" of the song. Alabama 3 frontman Rob Spragg wrote the song after hearing about the 1996 murder case of Sara Thornton, who stabbed her husband after two years of abuse, mistreatment and neglect. TV Guide ranked The Sopranos the best television series of all time. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Answer: You know the page: you click on a link, but instead of getting the site you want, an error pops up indicating that the requested page is not available. The HTTP 404 or 404 error message is a HTTP standard response code, in computer network communications, to indicate that the server could not find what was requested. The web site hosting server will typically generate a "404 Not Found" web page when a user attempts to follow a broken or dead link; hence the 404 error is one of the most recognizable errors encountered on the World Wide Web. It was a partnership between Microsoft and General Electric's NBC unit. NBC was the number one network in America, and they wanted a 24-hour news channel. Microsoft was the number one technology company in America, and they wanted a news web presence. So they went in 50-50 on MSNBC, creating not only the network, but also msnbc.com. After its first year, the network had 24,000 households viewing it per night, well short of the 578,000 of CNN and the 30,000 of Fox News.
