What does the letter "T" in Disney's EPCOT stand for?

Answer: The park's name, EPCOT, is an acronym for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, a utopian city of the future planned by Walt Disney, often interchanging "city" and "community." Epcot is the second of four theme parks built at Walt Disney World in Bay Lake, Florida, near the city of Orlando. It opened as EPCOT Center on October 1, 1982, and spans 300 acres. It is dedicated to the celebration of human achievement, namely technological innovation and international culture, and is often referred to as a "permanent World's Fair."

Why Was It Called the Rosetta Stone?

On July 20, 1799, during Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian campaign, a French soldier discovered a black basalt slab inscribed with ancient writing.  Like a lot of artifacts, the Rosetta Stone was so named because that's where it was found, in the town of Rosetta, about 35 miles north of Alexandria.

What Exactly Was on the Stone?

The irregularly shaped stone contained fragments of passages written in three different scripts: Greek, Egyptian hieroglyphics and Egyptian demotic. Researchers already knew how to read Greek, and they kind of knew how to read demotic. But hieroglyphics still seemed out of reach because, other than a few symbols, the script was largely indecipherable. The ancient Greek on the Rosetta Stone told archaeologists that it was inscribed by priests honoring the king of Egypt, Ptolemy V, in the second century B.C.    What really made the stone interesting was that one of the Greek sentences stated that all three scripts said the same thing. The artifact thus held the key to solving the riddle of hieroglyphics, a written language that had been “dead” for nearly 2,000 years.

Who Helped Translate the Code?

Several scholars, including Englishman Thomas Young made progress with the initial hieroglyphics analysis of the Rosetta Stone. French Egyptologist Jean-Francois Champollion, who had taught himself ancient languages, ultimately cracked the code and deciphered the hieroglyphics using his knowledge of Greek as a guide. Hieroglyphics used pictures to represent objects, sounds and groups of sounds. Once the Rosetta Stone inscriptions were translated, the language and culture of ancient Egypt was suddenly open to scientists as never before.

British troops defeated the French in Egypt in 1801, and the original stone came into British possession under the Capitulation of Alexandria and was transported to London.  Despite the discovery and most of the translation done by the French, the Rosetta Stone has been housed at the British Museum in London since 1802, except for a brief period during World War I. At that time, museum officials moved it to a separate underground location, along with other irreplaceable items from the museum’s collection, to protect it from the threat of bombs.

Answer: If you think a venti is the largest size cup on Starbucks' menu, you would be wrong. Starbucks actually has a secret, off-the-menu size called the trenta, which holds a whopping 31 ounces. You can only order a trenta for cold drinks, specifically iced teas, iced coffee, cold brew, and Refreshers. The Starbucks trenta is 325mL larger than Starbucks’ next largest size, the Venti. At 916 mL, the trenta is actually larger than the average capacity of the adult human stomach (900mL).

Who Accompanied Armstrong on the Apollo 11 Mission?

Armstrong's fellow astronauts on the historic Apollo 11 mission were Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin Jr. and Michael Collins. Aldrin, 39 years old at the time of the mission, was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and had served as a jet fighter pilot during the Korean War. He later worked at the newly opened U.S. Air Force Academy as an aide to the dean of faculty and in 1963 earned his doctorate in aeronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Aldrin piloted Apollo 11's lunar module to its landing on the moon's surface. Thirty-eight-year-old Collins piloted Apollo 11's command module and never made it to the moon's surface. After graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, he joined the U.S. Air Force and flew F-86 fighter jets.

What Unique Insurance Scheme Did the Astronauts Devise?

The price tag for life insurance coverage of men scheduled to be sent hurtling into space was so astronomically high that none of the Apollo 11 astronauts could afford it. To help provide for their families should the mission end in tragedy, Aldrin, Armstrong, and Collins concocted an unusual scheme. Before the scheduled launch of Apollo 11 and during the time the astronauts were in pre-launch quarantine, they signed hundreds of autographs on mission-related memorabilia and sent them to a friend for safekeeping. Should a tragedy have befallen the mission, the friend was to send the autographed memorabilia to the astronauts' families so that they could sell them off to raise money as needed.

How Long Did It Take Apollo 11 to Reach Lunar Orbit?

Apollo 11 lifted off the launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center just after 9:30 on the morning of July 16, 1969. On July 19, 76 hours and 240,000 miles later, the spacecraft entered into lunar orbit around the moon. After a variety of tests, observations and preparation, Neil Armstrong emerged from the module and made the first small step for man on the surface of the moon at 10:56:15 p.m. on July 20, 1969.

Why Was Armstrong Chosen to Be the First to Step Down Onto the Moon's Surface?

There were a number of reasons for having Armstrong go first. One was that Armstrong was the senior member of the Apollo 11 mission, so it seemed natural that he would be the first. There were also rumors that NASA admin thought Armstrong's ego might be best-suited to the honor, but those were not confirmed. However, the way the lunar module was designed pretty much required Armstrong to be the first to get out. When the hatch door was open, it would restrict the pilot's movements. So, Armstrong would get out first, giving Aldrin more room to leave the module.

The R.E.M. song "Man on the Moon" is about what comedian?

Answer: "Man on the Moon" is a song by the American alternative rock band R.E.M. Lyrically, the song is a tribute to the performer Andy Kaufman with numerous references to Kaufman's career including Elvis impersonation, wrestling, and the film My Breakfast with Blassie. The song's title and chorus refer to the moon landing conspiracy theories as an oblique allusion to rumors that Kaufman's 1984 death was faked. The song gave its name to a 1999 film based on Kaufman's life, Man on the Moon, and was used in the film's soundtrack.

Answer: O.J. Simpson is the former spokesperson for Hertz Rental Cars. For more than a decade, Simpson appeared in commercials running through airports, serving as an embodiment of speed. The tagline of the commercials was "The Superstar in a rent-a-car." Hertz tapped Simpson to be their spokesman in 1975, when they wanted to emphasize the speed of their service to their audience of primarily white businessmen. The commercials increased Hertz's sales and Simpson remained the spokesperson until his 1994 trial.

It was also referred to as First Manassas. The battle happened at Prince William and Fairfax Counties in Virginia between more than 32,000 Confederate and 28,000 Union troops following the Confederate attack on Fort Sumter. The hope by President Lincoln was that a quick defeat of Confederate forces at Manassas would open a path to Richmond. With the capture of Richmond by Union forces, the war could be over quickly. It didn’t happen the way Lincoln had hoped. The Confederate forces broke the Union line, sending them in scattering in retreat, along with picnickers who were watching the battle from the sidelines.

What Southern General Earned His Nickname At the First Battle of Bull Run?

Several future leaders commanded troops in the battle on both sides.  William T. Sherman and Ambrose Burnside commanded troops on the Union side. On the Confederate side, the commanders included James Ewell Brown “Jeb” Stuart, Wade Hampton and Thomas Jackson. Jackson had been a professor at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. In this battle, he led a brigade from Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, which helped the Confederates hold Henry House Hill, an important position.

Reportedly it was General Barnard Bee who first mentioned the nickname for Jackson, when he told his men to look toward Jackson, who was standing “like a stone wall.” After that, the Confederate General was referred to as Stonewall Jackson, and his brigade was called the Stonewall Brigade.

At Whose Home Did the Civil War Begin and End?

Poor Wilmer McLean, a grocer who lived at Manassas Junction, Virginia, could not fight for the Confederacy because he was 47 and too old at the time. The war came to him anyway. A stream called Bull Run ran through his property. During the battle, Confederate General Beauregard took over the man’s home as his headquarters, and McLean was forced to take his family and flee.  A few days later, McLean’s barn was commandeered as a makeshift jail and hospital for Confederate soldiers. McLean returned home alone and worked as a quartermaster for a while for the Confederate Army.

In 1863, McLean bought a new home in southern Virginia at Appomattox.  In 1965, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's house in Appomattox. His houses were, therefore, involved in one of the first and one of the last encounters of the American Civil War.

What May Have Contributed to the Number of Casualties?

The First Battle of Bull Run cost some 3,000 Union casualties, compared with 1,750 for the Confederates.  These estimates included those who were killed, wounded, captured and missing. The uniforms the men were wearing may have contributed to the high number of casualties. Since it was early in the war, uniforms had not been standardized to tell friend from foe.

Some Confederates, such as the 33rd Virginia Infantry, were dressed in blue. The Union soldiers from the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry were dressed in gray. Because of this, some soldiers were fired upon by their own troops, or enemy troops were allowed to approach too close. The 2nd Wisconsin, which was ordered to advance on Henry Hill, was forced to retreat and was fired upon by Union troops, who mistook them for Confederates because of the color of their uniforms. It was further complicated because both sides flew flags striped in white and red with a blue corner.

Answer: The character of Mork was played by a then-unknown comic Robin Williams. Mork was an alien from the planet Ork who landed on Earth in an egg-shaped spaceship, and struck up a friendship with a human named Mindy. Mork ended each episode imparting what he learned about human life before signing off by tugging his ears and saying his popular catchphrase "Nanu nanu." Mork & Mindy only lasted four seasons, but the series left its mark on pop culture, introducing the world to a comedian named Robin Williams. Nanu nanu, Mr. Williams.
