Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger were owners of which chain restaurant?

I think Planet Hollywood!!

Answer: Decades before they united for The Expendables series, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis threw their '80s-action-star weight behind the restaurant chain Planet Hollywood. Planet Hollywood was launched in 1991, and was backed by the Hollywood megastars. For the next several years, the restaurant would open locations around the world, each with a high-profile ribbon-cutting event. The company has since gone bankrupt twice. Nearly 100 locations have closed worldwide, leaving about 8 currently open.

What Iconic Band's Last Show Was Stopped When the Cops Came and Pulled the Plug?

It had been two and a half years since The Beatles had last played together when they showed up on their record label's rooftop one day and just started playing music. It was the last time The Beatles would ever perform together and audience reaction was ... mixed. The book The Beatles: Ten Years That Shook the World argues that while many now claim the fans went wild when this happened, a lot of that is revisionist history. According to the book, one viewer commented, "It's The Beatles? Christ, it doesn't sound like that," and another, "This kind of music is alright in its place, but I think it's a bit of an imposition to disrupt the business in this area." Apparently the feeling that people were witnessing a noise disturbance more than a slice of history was a sentiment held by others as well. A bank manager called police to complain. When the officers showed up, Paul McCartney convinced the band to continue playing, so an officer had to actually pull the plug on The Beatles' music career.  The Fab Four’s split was confirmed soon afterward, but this gig proved to be a fitting end for the most important band in pop history.

What Happened to Janis Joplin's Band Before Her Last Show?

Doing your last show is tough. Doing it without equipment is even tougher. The night before Janis Joplin's last show, her band's equipment was stolen. While touring with Full Tilt Boogie and working on their new album "Pearl," the band did their last show with borrowed instruments in front of 40,000 fans at Harvard Stadium. Less than two months later, on October 4, 1970, Joplin’s road manager, John Cooke, found her dead of an accidental heroin overdose at the Landmark Hotel in Los Angeles. She was 27 years old. "Pearl" was completed and released posthumously and its single "Me and Bobby McGee" reached number one on the charts.

In 1977, Aerosmith Turned Down a Plane They Considered Chartering for Their Tour. What Band Used the Plane Instead?

In 1977, Aerosmith was going on tour, and for that they needed an airplane. They were considering a Convair 240, but decided to pass, a decision that likely saved their lives. The plane was instead chartered by Lynyrd Skynyrd, heading out on what many believed would become their biggest tour to date. Lynyrd Skynyrd's last show took place on October 19, 1977. The next day, the plane crashed, killing band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines, along with the band's assistant road manager.

What Was Grateful Dead's Final Song Together?

The band was not exactly in top form, but the final performance also brought an end to a legendary 30 year career of one of the most influential rock bands in history. Jerry Garcia was clearly impacted by his drug addiction, at one point needing a teleprompter to help him remember the lines to his songs.  July 9th marked the final show of the tour, and Jerry Garcia subsequently checked himself into the Betty Ford Center, then died a month later. The band's final song together was "Box of Rain," the last words of which were fitting for them and any other band whose time ended prematurely: "Such a long long time to be gone/ and a short time to be there."

Starbucks coffee was named after a character in which famous novel?

Answer: You might remember from a high school English class that Starbuck was the first mate in Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick.” Writer Gordon Bowke, who co-founded Starbucks in 1971, originally wanted to name the company Peqoud, after the doomed whaleship in Moby-Dick. Luckily, his business partners settled on the name of the ship's first mate instead. Starbuck was the name of the first-mate of the whale-ship Pequod, the ship in Moby Dick. It also inspired Starbucks' famed green and white logo, which features a Siren from Greek Mythology.

What Was the Scopes Monkey Trial?

A science teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, named John Scopes faced charges of teaching his students about evolution in the classroom. This violated the Butler Act that passed several months earlier and had been signed into law by Tennessee Governor Peay. The new law made it a misdemeanor offense to teach anything counter to divine creation. It also prohibited the teaching of evolution.

Scopes became involved after the American Civil Liberties Union announced that it was willing to finance a challenge to the Butler Act in a court of law to prove that it was unconstitutional. However, the ACLU needed a school teacher to cooperate by violating the new law in order to take the constitutionality of the act to court.

Did Scopes Violate the Law?

According to him, he didn’t. The science textbook used in Tennessee schools at the time was Civic Biology by George William Hunter. It had been published originally in 1914. Some local businessmen supported the idea of taking the case to court because it would give their town publicity. Scopes reluctantly agreed. However, following the trial, he stated that he had skipped over the chapter of the book about evolution and did not teach it. He also said lawyers had coached the students who testified at the trial.

Who Were the Attorneys at the Trial?

William Jennings Bryan, former candidate for vice president of the United States, acted as the prosecuting attorney. Scopes was defended by a famous criminal attorney from Chicago, Clarence Darrow. The trial had a setback in Scopes’ defense from the beginning when the Judge in the case ruled that Darwin’s theory of evolution was not on trial, Scopes was. The crowd in the courtroom was so large, the judge ordered the trial moved outside the next day, fearing the courtroom floor would not support the weight.

Darrow called William Jennings Bryan as his sole witness in an attempt to discredit his literal interpretation of the Bible. Bryan did not stand up to the questioning and contradicted himself, which the crowd found amusing. On July 21, Darrow asked the jury to find Scopes guilty, so he could appeal the case to a higher court. By doing this, Bryan was stopped from delivering his closing argument. Eight minutes later, the jury returned a verdict of guilty.

Was the Verdict Appealed?

Scopes was found guilty on July 21, 1925, and ordered to pay a fine of $100. Although Bryan had won the case, he had been publicly humiliated and his fundamentalist beliefs had been disgraced. Five days later, on July 26, he lay down for a Sunday afternoon nap and never woke up.

In 1927, the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned the Monkey Trial verdict on a technicality but left the constitutional issues unresolved until 1968, when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a similar Arkansas law on the grounds that it violated the First Amendment.

Michelangelo I believe??

Answer: David is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture created between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo. The statue represents the Biblical hero David, a favored subject in the art of Florence. Michelangelo was only 26 years old when he was commissioned to carve the sculpture, and worked for over two years to create one of his most breathtaking masterpieces of gleaming white marble. The biblical figure of David became the symbol the liberty and freedom of the Republican ideals, showing Florence’s readiness to defend itself.

Which U.S. Vice President killed a man while in office?

Answer: Today marks the anniversary of the deadly duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Aaron Burr was the third Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson. On July 11, 1804, Aaron Burr killed his political rival Alexander Hamilton in a duel. Burr was never tried for the illegal duel and all charges against him were eventually dropped. The death of Hamilton, however, ended Burr's political career. President Jefferson dropped him from the ticket for the 1804 presidential election, and he never held office again.

Why Did the Two Duel That Day?

Hamilton and Burr had a feud going back years. They and their families had battled against each other in numerous elections, many of which had devolved into mud-slinging. When Jefferson and Burr tied in their race for President of the United States, Hamilton played an instrumental role in handing the presidency to Jefferson. So tensions were already high between the two when Hamilton attacked Burr's character in the election for Governor of New York. And so a fed up Burr challenged Hamilton to what was called "an affair of honor," which is a way better name than "duel."

How Did Hamilton's Son Die?

"Affairs of honor" were actually relatively common affairs at the time. Burr and Hamilton both had been in duels before this one. How did they participate in prior duels and not end up dead or convicted of murder? Well, it was actually pretty rare for duels to result in death. Kinda disappointing, right?

The combatants would often apologize or make up before shots were fired (after all, there's nothing like having a gun aimed at you to make you reevaluate a petty feud), and the guns used weren't especially accurate. However, Hamilton's son was not as lucky as many other combatants. He was shot in 1801 on the exact same spot where his dad and Burr would duel three years later. How did Hamilton's son find himself in a duel you ask? He was being too rambunctious at a theater and it really ticked off one of the people in the audience.

Hamilton Missed With the First Shot He Fired. Some Say His Aim was Off, But What's the Other Explanation Given?

The two men drew their pistols, Hamilton fired, then Burr returned fire, the latter hitting his target in the gut. Why did Hamilton miss? Was he just a bad shot? It's certainly possible. Like we said, people missed often back then. But another explanation has gained traction over the years. Many think Hamilton intentionally missed, hoping Burr would do the same and they would then be able to resolve this like gentlemen. (Apparently Burr had other ideas.) The night before, Hamilton had written a letter stating, "I have resolved, if our interview is conducted in the usual manner, and it pleases God to give me the opportunity, to reserve and throw away my first fire, and I have thoughts even of reserving my second fire." Later, the doctor caring for Hamilton quoted him to have said, "I did not intend to fire at him."

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

Was Burr Ever Prosecuted?

So it was that the sitting Vice President was charged with murder in both the state of New York and New Jersey. How did he sidestep these charges? With a very clever strategy: staying out of those two states. He was able to finish out the rest of his term as VP, and eventually the charges were dropped. He lived out the rest of his days in New York as people kind of let the whole murder in cold blood thing go.

Answer: The U.S. Marine Corps was created by an act of Congress on this day in 1798. While the Marine Corps is its own branch of the U.S. military, it falls under the administration of the Department of the Navy. This close working relationship dates back to the American Revolution and has been affirmed by several acts of Congress. Located under the authority of the Department of the Navy, the U.S. Marine Corps serves as a land and air “force in readiness” capable of supporting U.S. military operations and executing national political objectives.

Which book begins with the line, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times"?

Answer: This is the first line in Charles Dickens famous novel "A Tale of Two Cities". It is one of the most famous opening lines in all of English Literature. The novel opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …” This passage suggests an age of radical opposites taking place across the English Channel, in France and the United Kingdom respectively during the turmoil of the French Revolutions.
