Who led a team of Chicago law enforcement agents nicknamed "The Untouchables"?

Eliot Ness, no less!! LOL

Answer: Eliot Ness was a law enforcement official in Chicago, best known for his efforts to enforce Prohibition. Ness assembled a team of Prohibition enforcement personnel known as "The Untouchables" to combat the activities of gangster Al Capone. An attempt by Capone to bribe Ness's agents was seized on by Ness for publicity, leading to the media nickname "The Untouchables." Ness is often recognized for destroying the multimillion-dollar breweries operated by Al Capone, and was instrumental in ceasing the power Capone had over the city of Chicago.

How Did Gotti Come to Power?

Gotti's criminal career with the Gambino family began rather modestly with the teenage Gotti running errands for Carmine Fatico, a capo in the Anastasia crime family, which became the Gambino family when Anastasia underboss Carlo Gambino ordered Albert Anastasia killed in July 1957. Gotti soon graduated to truck hijackings and gradually strengthened his reputation as a reliable associate for the powerful crime family.

After a short stint in prison for attempted manslaughter, Gotti in 1977 was formally initiated into the Cosa Nostra and was soon made capo of a Gambino crew formerly commanded by his mentor Fatico. Gotti not only personally disliked Paul Castellano, who became boss of the family after the 1976 death of Carlo Gambino, Castellano's brother-in-law, but like many of his fellow members Gotti disagreed with Castellano's way of running the family. For years, Gotti secretly plotted against Castellano, and in December 1985, he finally saw a chance to make his move. From a nearby parked car, Gotti watched as a crew of his hand-picked hitmen shot and killed Castellano in front of a popular mid-Manhattan steak house. Gotti was selected to take command of the Gambino crime family not long thereafter.

Why the Nickname ¨Teflon Don¨?

Despite an incredible history of criminal activity -- both documented and undocumented -- Gotti managed to beat many of the criminal charges brought against him. In one of the most closely watched legal cases, Gotti and a handful of co-defendants faced federal charges of racketeering in early 1987. Despite an impressive case put on by the prosecution, the jury hearing the case acquitted Gotti and his co-defendants, earning for the Dapper Don yet another nickname, ¨The Teflon Don,¨ because the feds couldn't make their charges stick on Gotti.

What Was Gotti's Estimated Income as Boss?

You won't find income reports for Cosa Nostra crime families nor for their bosses in the pages of ¨Forbes¨ or ¨Fortune.¨ However, it has been estimated that the Gambino family had an annual revenue of about $500 million in 1986, the family's first year under the command of Gotti. As for Gotti himself, his longtime underboss Salvatore ¨Sammy the Bull¨ Gravano wrote in his memoir ¨Underboss¨ that Gotti's annual income probably was somewhere in the range of $10-12 million.

How Did Gotti Die?

Gotti was eventually brought to justice by Gravano, his longtime right-hand man, who decided to turn state's evidence and testify against his former boss and many of Gotti's other associates. After being sentenced to prison, Gotti was transported to the United States Penitentiary in Illinois. Diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, Gotti was sent to the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, to have the tumor removed. Two years later, the cancer returned, and Gotti was again sent back to Springfield where he spent the last days of his life, dying on June 10, 2002.

Answer: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (real names: Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh) led a gang of criminal outlaws known as the “Wild Bunch” through a series of bank and train robberies across the American Old West. They eluded police by escaping to South America. It is believed they were trapped and killed by police in Bolivia in 1908, but reports vary. Their exploits served as the basis for the 1967 Oscar-winning film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Who invented the revolver?

Answer: In 1836, Samuel Colt received a U.S. patent for a revolver mechanism that enabled a gun to be fired multiple times without reloading. By the start of the U.S. Civil War he had made the Colt revolver perhaps the world’s best-known firearm. The Colt Single Action Army handgun, better known as the Colt .45, was not released until a decade after Colt’s death in 1862. Dubbed the “Peacemaker” and “the gun that won the West,” the Colt .45 served as the standard service revolver of the U.S. military between 1873 and 1892.

What Happened in 1947 to Put Roswell, New Mexico, on the Map?

In the summer of 1947, a local farmer by the name of WW Brazel came across some scattered metal wreckage on a farm just outside of Roswell. Brazel collected the remnants and notified the local town sheriff that he believed he had found something of interest. The sheriff brought Brazel’s findings to the attention of authorities at the U.S. Air Force base, who later visited Brazel at home and attempted to reconstruct whatever it was Brazel had found, but were ultimately unsuccessful.

On July 8, the US Air Force called the wreckage a “flying disk,” which launched the incident - and Roswell along with it - into UFO infamy.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

Did the Air Force Stick with That Story?

Definitely not. Shortly after the initial press release, the Air Force backtracked on the whole “flying disk” thing and claimed the wreckage was actually a downed weather balloon. That quelled the majority of the hype around the crash for about the next 20 years or so, until 1978 when a nuclear physicist named Stanton Friedman brought the case back to life. Friedman interviewed Jesse Marcel, an Air Force major who accompanied the wreckage from Roswell to a base in Fort Worth, Texas.

Marcel’s account of the 1947 incident along with a series of books in the early 80’s gave rise to the theory that the Roswell crash had actually been an alien aircraft and that along with the wreckage, several alien bodies were recovered.

What Did the 1997 Report Contain?

A week before the 50th anniversary of the incident, the Air Force released a 231-page report titled, “The Roswell Report, Case Closed.” The report reiterates that the fallen aircraft was actually a weather balloon that the Air Force had been testing as a probe to aide American efforts in the Cold War. The balloon was apparently intended to monitor the atmosphere for Soviet nuclear tests.

As for the alien bodies? The report attributed those to a mix of test dummies included with the weather balloon and goosed up accounts from supposed “witnesses.”

What’s The Status of the Case Today?

Aside from a fringe group of true-believers, the Roswell incident is now looked at more as modern folklore than a genuine government conspiracy. Most “evidence” favored by the believers has a justifiable explanation from the Air Force reports, leading most to look at the Roswell incident as just a crazy story.

That doesn’t stop the town of Roswell from fully capitalizing on the legend. The small town is home to the International UFO Museum and Research Center and plenty of restaurants, shops and tourist attractions playing off the mysterious event.

In just eliminating Al, Jesse and Larry, it leaves us with Rodney!!

Answer: In 1991, a videotape circulated around the world of Rodney King being beaten by L.A.P.D. officers after an eight mile high speed chase. It would become one of the biggest police brutality cases in history. After the state trial, three of the four L.A.P.D. officers were acquitted and the jury didn’t reach a verdict for the fourth. The acquittals sparked the 1992 Los Angeles riots and eventually led to a federal trial where two officers were found guilty and the other two were acquitted. King was eventually awarded $3.8 million in a civil trial for the injuries he sustained.

Sounds like Peter Pan!!

Answer: Peter Pan is J. M. Barrie's most famous work, in the form of a 1904 play and a 1911 novel. Both versions tell the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous yet innocent little boy who can fly, and has many adventures on the island of Neverland. The novel begins with the classic opening line, “All children, except one, grow up.” Since the Scottish author published the novel in 1911 it has become a children’s classic. In 1929, Barrie gave the copyright of the Peter Pan works to Great Ormond Street Hospital, a children's hospital in London.

The Day Michael Jackson Died, What Happened to Twitter, Wikipedia, and AOL Instant Messenger?

When something big happens, it's pretty common for people to say it broke the internet. Of course, this is usually just an expression. But when Michael Jackson died, it actually kind of did break the internet. The story was not only a major one, but also a confusing one. TMZ reported that Jackson died, then the LA Times reported that he was in a coma. People were both reacting to what was happening and trying to figure out what was going on. So it's probably not a surprise that both TMZ and the LA Times went down several times with all the traffic they were getting. Twitter crashed as people around the world raced to tweet about the deceased pop star. Also to crash that day: Wikipedia and AOL Instant Messenger. Which, of course, provokes the question: Is Instant Messenger still a thing?

What Did Google Think Was Happening When Everyone Started Searching for Information on Michael Jackson's Death?

Those sites weren't the only ones to see a traffic surge that day. In fact, so many people searched for Michael Jackson news through the Google News service, that for about 25 minutes, Google thought they were under some sort of virus attack. Perhaps a virus that was replicating and searching for the same thing over and over in an attempt to crash their servers. So if you were looking for information about Michael Jackson the day he died, Google News would often return an error message saying, "We're sorry, but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now." Google wasn't the only site that saw an explosion in searches that day. Yahoo! also saw more unique visitors to its page that day than at any point before in the site's history.

How Much Money Did Michael Jackson Make in 2015?

Dying certainly hasn't slowed down Michael Jackson's earning power. In 2015 alone, Michael Jackson earned $115 million from music sales, the Cirque Du Soleil show based on his music and his stake in Sony among other things. According to Forbes, that made him the highest-earning dead celebrity of the year, a distinction which Jackson has achieved multiple times. In fact, Jackson has been earning nine figures a year ever since he died, and the Guinness Book of World Records recognizes him as the highest-earning deceased artist ever.

Where Did Michael Jackson's Memorial Service Rank on the List of Most Watched Memorial Services Ever?

Reports vary on how many people tuned in to watch Michael Jackson's funeral, with some pegging the number at a billion when you count worldwide viewership and internet streaming. According to Nielsen, TV viewership of the event was comprised of 31.14 million viewers here in the states. MSNBC said it was their website's most streamed story in history up to that point and it was the second most ever for CNN. But no matter how you count the data, most seem to agree it was the second most watched memorial service ever, behind only that of Princess Diana.

What invention did Michael Jackson receive a patent for?

Answer: Michael Jackson was famous for his gravity defying moves onstage, thanks to his invention of the anti-gravity shoe lift. His iconic, gravity-defying lean was first seen in the 1987 video for Smooth Criminal. In order to accomplish this famous forward lean, Michael Jackson invented a special shoe that had a slotted heel which slid onto bolts that protruded from the floor, creating a dovetail joint between the dancer and the stage. The patent was awarded in 1993, and expired in 2005. In 2009, the one of a kind shoes were auctioned off for a cool $600,000.
