Which game show did the town of Hot Springs, New Mexico change its name to?

Answer: Originally named Hot Springs, the city changed its name to "Truth or Consequences", the title of a popular game show. In March 1950, Ralph Edwards, the host of the quiz show Truth or Consequences, announced that he would air the program on its 10th anniversary from the first town that renamed itself after the show; Hot Springs won the honor, officially changing its name on March 31, 1950 (the program broadcast from there the following evening, April 1st). In 2012, the population of the city was 6,411. It is commonly known within New Mexico as T or C.

Why Was the Republican Party Founded?

Frustrated at the apparent unwillingness or inability of the Whig Party to stop the spread of slavery into America's western territories, disgruntled Whig Party members broke away from their party to form a new political movement opposed to slavery's spread. The seeds for the new political party were first planted at an informal meeting in a schoolhouse in Ripon, Wisconsin, in early 1854. Those meeting in Ripon were determined to find a way to carry out the goals of the short-lived Free Soil Party, which focused primarily on stopping the spread of slavery. Energizing the anti-slavery movement in the North was the proposed Kansas-Nebraska Act, federal legislation that would allow new states to decide whether they would allow slavery within their borders. The man behind the meeting in Ripon was a young attorney named Alvan E. Bovay, who had moved to Ripon four years earlier from New York.

Who Suggested the Name for the New Party?

Attorney Bovay, a transplanted New Yorker, had been close friends with Horace Greeley, the well-known editor of the New York Tribune. Although Bovay later said that he was the first to suggest the name "Republican" for the new party, it was Greeley who first brought the name to national prominence in a June 1854 editorial he wrote in the Tribune. Greeley wrote: "We should not care much whether those thus united (against slavery) were designated 'Whig,' 'Free Democrat' or something else; though we think some simple name like 'Republican' would more fitly designate those who had united to restore the Union to its true mission of champion and promulgator of Liberty rather than propagandist of slavery."

At the Republicans' first national convention in Philadelphia in 1856, the party picked John C. Fremont, a prominent U.S. military officer and explorer, as its presidential candidate. In the election that November, Fremont faced off against Democrat James Buchanan and Whig-American Millard Fillmore. Fremont came in second to Buchanan, polling about one-third of the popular vote and almost 40 percent of the electoral vote. Four years later, the Republicans selected Abraham Lincoln as their candidate, and he went on to win the election. During Lincoln's presidency, slavery was abolished.

Answer: On this day in 1930, construction began on Boulder Dam on the Colorado River. Originally known as Boulder Dam, it was officially renamed Hoover Dam by a joint resolution of Congress. It is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between Nevada and Arizona. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was named after President Herbert Hoover.

What Was Surratt Accused Of?

Surratt was accused of being part of the conspiracy to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. While history blurbs normally concentrate on the actions of John Wilkes Booth, who actually killed Lincoln, Surratt does have her own museum, the Surratt House Museum, and her name occasionally pops up in stories about the assassination.

Surratt was the landlady of a boarding house that hosted gatherings of the people involved in plotting to kidnap, and then kill, Lincoln. Surratt's son, John Surratt Jr., knew John Wilkes Booth well, and Surratt Jr. had been involved in Booth's original (and scrapped) plan to kidnap Lincoln. When that didn't work out, Booth and other conspirators hatched a plan to kill Lincoln and a few others. Mary Surratt's proximity as landlady and her family's ties to Booth made her a target for investigators. However, Surratt was never convicted of taking part in the actual murder.

Why Did People Think She Was Involved?

Surratt had a number of issues going against her when police arrested her. As mentioned, she was the landlady of the boarding house where the conspiracy was formed; that alone made her guilty in the eyes of some, even though it really didn't pass the "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" test. Her son was known to be one of Booth's friends, which again was guilt by association; she was also a known Confederate sympathizer, often offering her boarding house as a place for Confederate spies to hole up. Remember, the assassination took place not that long after the end of the Civil War -- just a few days -- so emotions were still high, and civil peace between the two sides wasn't that easy to find. A Confederate sympathizer was a ripe target for accusations.

But possibly the most convincing evidence came from her tavern keeper, John Lloyd. He claimed that Surratt had allowed the storage of weapons on the property and ordered him to have guns ready to go on the same day that Lincoln died.

Why Were Her Conviction and Sentencing Unusual, Other Than Because of Her Gender?

The temporal proximity of the trial to the end of the Civil War made officials think a military tribunal, rather than a civilian trial, would be more appropriate. Surratt was not a soldier; however, because the assassination was linked to the Civil War, everyone involved ended up in a military trial, except for Surratt Jr., who fled to Canada.

Another very unusual issue was that no clemency was issued. No one at the time thought a woman would ever be executed, especially since this woman was not accused of murder. While everyone made plans and arranged for the usual execution procedures, they also arranged to have extra guards nearby to take Surratt back to prison -- they were that convinced that they wouldn't actually have to hang her. (In fact, she was even placed at the far right on the gallows, considered an honorable place for people being hung in groups.) Instead, at the last minute, the executioner was told to proceed with the hanging.

One weird problem was that the executioner had no idea how to bind Surratt. People about to be hung in those days had their arms and legs bound, but the executioner couldn't figure out what to do about the skirt Surratt was wearing (he eventually tied the rope over the skirt).

Public opinion turned against the execution after the fact. It was kind of like Brexit vote in 2016, where many people who voted to leave the European Union said they did so thinking their vote wouldn't matter; people in Maryland in 1865 were incensed at the assassination and just fine with the execution until they realized that it was actually happening. Afterward, they painted her as a victim who never should have died.

Answer: Pete Best was an original member and first drummer of the Beatles. Best was invited to join The Beatles on August 12, 1960, the day before their first trip to Hamburg. He was eventually replaced by Ringo Starr on August 16 1962, when The Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, dismissed Best under the direction of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison, following The Beatles' first recording session at Abbey Road Studios. Best sued the Beatles for defamation of character, eventually winning an out-of-court settlement.

Answer: Ketchup wasn’t always the popular condiment that it is today. Its popularity in the U.S. grew thanks to Dr. John Cook Bennett. In 1834, Bennett published papers claiming tomatoes helped treat diarrhea, indigestion and prevented cholera. Bennett started publishing recipes for tomato ketchup, which were then concentrated into pill form and sold as a patent medicine across the country. It was marketed as the new wonder drug. By 1876, ketchup had undergone a remarkable turnaround in the court of public opinion.

W.W. "Mac" Brazel was a local rancher who one day came across a whole bunch of debris in his pasture. Metal sticks, scrap material, foil reflector, you know, basically the kind of junk you see at a flea market when someone is trying to sell their trash instead of simply throwing it out. He reported it to the sheriff, and soon a team of soldiers was on Brazel's lawn, taking everything away in armored trucks. Which was probably not the best way to dispel the idea that Mac had recovered something the government wanted kept secret.

Soon after the discovery came the kind of press release we just don't get anymore. "The many rumors regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's office of Chaves County." But soon the military was telling a different story. The following day, the press reported a military announcement that it was a weather balloon and other weather-balloon type equipment, not a flying saucer. Which is incredibly disappointing.

What 1950s Air Force Tests in New Mexico Only Fueled Speculation about Aliens in the Region?

The government didn't do themselves any favors over the next few years in their quest to convince people that nothing alien-ish was going on. In the 1950s, the Air Force started dropping dummies from the sky into the New Mexico desert to test what it would be like if pilots fell from high altitude. Now just imagine how you'd react if you lived in an area where you thought there might be aliens and you saw something latex skinned and not-quite-human falling from the sky near government air force bases. Probably didn't help that military vehicles would then scurry in to clean up the dummies.

In 1997, the military released a 231-page document that they hoped would finally lay this whole incident to bed before its 50-year anniversary could get people all riled up again. They announced that their cleanup of the discovered debris was indeed a military cover up. Just not an alien-related one. The debris came from Project Mogul: a top secret attempt to use high altitude weather balloons to eavesdrop on the Soviet Union from thousands of miles away. The project was so classified that even the people working at the air force base that day didn't know about it, which caused the initial confusion. And it was also so classified that when the higher ups saw the very messy job the local Air Force base was doing explaining things, they couldn't clarify the matter and had to just let them go. And that is all there is to it.

Or so we're told.

Answer: In the National Lampoon's Vacation film, the Griswold family travel across the country to visit the mythical theme park, Walley World. There are distracting side stories, including Christie Brinkley and her red Ferrari, but the focus of the road trip film is on making it to the roller coaster haven. After the epic journey, a talking moose meets them at the front entrance to inform them that the park is closed for maintenance. Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California served as the stand-in for the park in the first movie.

Ay caramba! The Dominican Republic boasts just 9.7 million Spanish speakers. In the U.S. 2006 census, it was found that 34 million people spoke Spanish in their households, making it number five on the list. Mexico topped the list with 106.5 million Spanish speakers, and Ecuador was 10th on the list with 13.3 million Spanish speakers.
