Benjamin Franklin Samuel Chase John Jay John Marshall Answer: One of the Founding Fathers of the United States, John Jay was the nation's first chief justice of the Supreme Court. John Jay joined Alexander Hamilton and James Madison to write five of the essays that became known as The Federalist Papers. The Federalist Papers discussed, and argued in favor of, the principles of government laid out in the Constitution. After the establishment of the U.S. government, George Washington appointed Jay as the Supreme Court's first chief justice, serving from 1789 to 1795. Members phkrause Posted July 1, 2017 Author Members Posted July 1, 2017 18 hours ago, phkrause said: How Widely Was the Explosion Felt? Shortly before the explosion, people living in the hills northwest of Lake Baikal, hundreds of miles south of the impact site, saw a blue-tinged column of light streaking across the sky. Shortly thereafter, they witnessed a stunning flash of light and heard the sound of a massive explosion. A man sitting at his house near Vanavara, roughly 40 miles from the impact site, reported that as the mysterious light in the sky grew closer, he felt such unbearable heat that he thought for a moment his clothes were on fire. Moments later, the force of the explosion threw him several feet from the spot where he'd been sitting. Seismographs at Irkutsk, 500 miles away, registered a shock wave equivalent to an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale. The shock wave also registered on seismographs as far away as London. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Determined to Be the Cause? So remote was the site of the impact that it was several years before the first recorded scientific expedition was launched to investigate the cause of the explosion. In 1921, Russian mineralogist Leonid Kulik led a mission organized by the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Based largely on eyewitness accounts, the scientists on the expedition initially concluded that the explosion and subsequent impact were caused by a giant meteorite crashing to Earth. A subsequent mission in 1927 found no crater site but instead an area of the forest -- five miles across -- with scorched trees that were still standing but were devoid of branches. This was determined to be ground zero of the explosion. Moving farther away from that point in all directions were larger areas of the forest where virtually all the trees had been knocked down in a direction away from ground zero. Given the absence of a crater site, current scientific thinking attributes the explosion and impact on the forest below to the mid-air explosion of a meteorite roughly four to six miles above the Earth's surface. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: How Does Tunguska's Event Compare to Other Massive Explosions? Based on all the scientific evidence gathered over the years, scientists estimate that the explosion over Tunguska was equivalent in explosive power to somewhere between 10 and 30 megatons of TNT. By contrast, the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II were equivalent to about 13 kilotons and 21 kilotons of TNT, respectively. Although far less powerful than the Tunguska explosion, the bombs dropped on those Japanese cities caused widespread devastation. More recently, on February 15, 2013, a meteoroid estimated to weigh 10,000 tons exploded 14 miles above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk in the Ural Mountains. That explosion was estimated to be equivalent to 460 kilotons of TNT, far more powerful than the atomic bombs of World War II but only a fraction of the size of the Tunguska explosion. Members phkrause Posted July 2, 2017 Author Members Posted July 2, 2017 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Led the Union and Confederate Armies into Battle? Following the Confederate victory at The Battle of Chancellorsville in May of 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his army of Confederate troops on a northern offensive with hopes of making it as far as Harrisburg, or even Philadelphia. Instead of facing Major General Joseph Hooker for the second time (they had famously gone head-to-head in Chancellorsville), Lee was met in Gettysburg by Major General George Meade, who had been appointed commander only three days before the battle by President Lincoln. The President felt Hooker’s loss at Chancellorsville was too much and relieved him of command. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: How Long Did the Battle Last? From the morning of July 1, 1863, to the evening of July 3. The Confederacy reached Gettysburg that first morning to an established Union army set up on three ridges along the west side of town. The first day is often viewed as a precursor to the bloodier second and third days, but was still one of the top 25 largest battles of the Civil War. The second day was the bloodiest of the war, with estimates as high as 20,000 casualties. Despite the massive casualties, by the end of the third day, the comparable sizes of the two armies remained in favor of the Union, and on the morning of July 4th, Lee began his retreat back to Virginia. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Was the Battle Influential on the Outcome of the War? By most historical accounts, yes. The Battle of Gettysburg is widely regarded as a major turning point of the war. Lee’s army was reduced by a third at Gettysburg, but the defeat had a severe political impact in addition to the loss of men. Lincoln denied Alexander Stephens, the Confederate Vice President, entry into Washington under a truce flag in the final hours of the battle. It’s also been noted that the loss signified the end of any hope of European support for the Confederacy. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: How Long Afterward Did Lincoln Deliver the Gettysburg Address? Four and a half months after the battle had ended, President Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg for the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery where he gave his most famous speech. The scars of the battle were still fresh on the landscape of Gettysburg and Lincoln was suffering from the early signs of smallpox when he delivered the now infamous lines: “Four score and seven years ago…” Though the speech lasted a mere two minutes, Lincoln managed to reaffirm American democracy and reshape the cause of the war as more than just a fight for the Union, but truly a fight for humanity. The term ZIP, is an acronym for Zone Improvement Plan. Simultaneously with the introduction of the ZIP code, two-letter state abbreviations were introduced. Robert Moon, an employee of the post office, is considered the father of the ZIP code although he proposed using just three digits; he submitted his proposal while working as a postal inspector. The first ZIP code was issued to Agawam, Massachusetts. The town's postal code is 01001. According to designer Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the sculpture’s true title is “Liberty Enlightening the World.” The statue arrived from France in 350 pieces, packed into 214 crates aboard an ocean liner. The statue was reassembled on her new pedestal in four months’ time. The statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States, and was a welcoming sight to immigrants arriving from abroad. Members phkrause Posted July 3, 2017 Author Members Posted July 3, 2017 17 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was Unusual About Earhart's Last Flight? Earhart and Noonan were embarking on a round-the-world flight that, in itself, wasn't a new thing, but their gimmick was that it was to be an equatorial flight. That meant it would be the longest flight attempted overall, as well as the longest by a woman. It was not going to be nonstop, though, and Earhart and Noonan were supposed to make a final stop on Howland Island before returning to the U.S. and completing the flight. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Reaction When Her Signal Was Lost? Earhart's final flight was not a form of rebellion, an attempt to prove this or that to fuddy-duddy officials. On the contrary; her flight was well-funded and tracked by organizations such as the U.S. Coast Guard, with politicians and everyday citizens alike waiting to see if she could accomplish her global equatorial flight. She had a massive support network that was only beaten by the sheer distances between landforms in the Pacific that garbled transmissions. When word got out that Earhart and Noonan were missing, then-President Roosevelt asked the U.S. Navy to search for the plane -- nine ships and 66 aircraft in total looked for the two aviators, but were unable to find them. 17 hours ago, phkrause said: What Recent Discovery Threw Old Theories Into Doubt About Earhart's Fate? In 2012, jar fragments were found on Nikumaroro Island; the fragments all appeared to be from the same jar and when reconstructed, researchers found it was a jar of freckle cream used in Earhart's day. Most historians and searchers had thought Earhart and Noonan crashed into the ocean, but a pet theory going around had placed them as potential castaways in the vicinity of Nikumaroro, based on reports of a male and female castaway and the discovery of a skeleton that, while first determined to be an elderly male, was later redetermined to be an adult but younger female. The freckle cream jar, while not definitive, is a hint that maybe that theory is correct because Earhart was known to dislike her freckles intensely. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Recent Discovery Hints That Earhart's Fate Could Have Been Avoided? At the time of Earhart's disappearance, radio operators in the area and as far south as Australia reported receiving several odd, hard-to-decipher calls over the radio. These were considered to be bogus and thus ignored. However, in 2012, The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) released information stating that many of the calls were in fact from Earhart. They contained her plane's call sign, KHAQQ, and some appeared to originate from around Nikumaroro, the reef that may have been Earhart and Noonan's final resting place. There were even hints that operators worldwide had heard distress calls in a female voice at the time of the disappearance. While there's no way to tell whether rescue ships would have been able to find the two in time, the calls and their treatment as fakes indicate that, had operators acted on the calls and tried to trace them then, there might have been a chance to save Earhart and Noonan. John Wilkes Booth Leon F. Czolgosz Charles J. Guiteau Sirhan Sirhan Answer: On this day in 1881, President James A. Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau, a disgruntled office seeker in Washington, D.C. As Garfield fell to the ground, Guiteau exclaimed, "I did it. I will go to jail for it. I am a Stalwart and Arthur will be President." After 11 weeks of intensive care, Garfield died from an infection and internal hemorrhage. The following day, Chester A. Arthur was inaugurated as the 21st president of the United States. Guiteau was convicted of Garfield’s murder and executed by hanging in 1882. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan.
