Members phkrause Posted June 18, 2017 Author Members Posted June 18, 2017 23 hours ago, phkrause said: What National Chain Reported Record Sales the Day of the O.J. Simpson Car Chase? The O.J. Simpson car chase had everyone in America glued to their TV sets, and on the west coast, they were glued to their sets during dinner time. Explained Tim McIntyre, VP of corporate communications for Domino's pizza, "People were so enthralled by the bizarre nature of what was happening, they didn't want to miss a moment, so instead of going out to dinner or making dinner, many people ordered pizza." In fact, so many people ordered pizza that Domino's recorded record sales for the day, sales rivaling the numbers they usually do during the Super Bowl. Domino's has grown in the more than 20 years since, and they've set new records and, if you're curious, no they don't think the reason they've grown has anything to do with the publicity they gained that day. "Other than our being mentioned in the media on every 10th anniversary of this odd event, it had no impact on our brand whatsoever," he said. "We're certainly not going to give O.J. Simpson any credit for the success we enjoy in our global brand today. It was a bizarre blip, and nothing more." 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Was Playing in Game 5 of the NBA Finals When the Car Chase Happened? June 17, 1994, was a big day in sports, and not just because a former star running back was wanted for murder. Arnold Palmer was playing his last U.S. Open round ever, the Rangers were celebrating their recent Stanley Cup victory with a parade, Ken Griffey Jr. hit his 30th home run which tied Babe Ruth's record for most homers hit before June 30th, and oh yeah, the World Cup was starting. Add to all that that the chase interrupted game 5 of the NBA Finals (Knicks-Rockets). NBC put the game in a box in the corner of the screen while Tom Brokaw covered the car chase. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: Name Five Incriminating Items Found in the Car When the Chase Ended? At one point in the car chase, O.J. Simpson said, in a phone conversation with LAPD Detective Tom Lange, "you let the police know, you let them all know, I wasn't running." This would be a tough sell when police finally discovered what was in the car: fake facial hair, makeup adhesive, clothes, Simpson's passport and a gun. And his friend driving the car, Al Cowlings, had just shy of $10,000 cash in his pocket. 23 hours ago, phkrause said: At One Point, "Porn King" Michael Pulwer Became Somewhat Famous for Owning What O.J.-Related Item? It's been a bit tough keeping track of what's happened to the White Bronco since it's time on the air. Multiple people have owned it, not all of them identifiable. But we do know that, for a time, the car was owned by Michael Pulwer, a collector and one-time friend of Cowlings and Simpson. Pulwer, who was once described by his cousin as "a porn king," made his fortune in the adult film industry. Pulwer said 5-10 times a year, people would ask if they could rent the Bronco for weddings or similar occasions. Which is pretty disturbing when you think about it. It's even gone on display at the Luxor in Vegas. "I think someday, somebody will want to have it in a museum of famous or infamous cars," Pulwer said. Makes sense. If you're going to have a museum featuring famous or infamous cars, it would be really hard not to include O.J. Simpson's white Ford Bronco. Where were you when the O.J. chase was going on? Tell us what you remember in the comments below. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

Eisenhower Woodrow Wilson Richard Nixon Answer: Father’s Day was proposed in the early 20th century, when Sonora Louise Smart Dodd wanted to honor her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran. According to the National Father’s Day Committee, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in Dodd's town of Spokane, Wash., in 1910. The holiday’s June date is tied to Smart’s birthday of June 5. Father’s Day was finally made a national holiday in 1972 via presidential proclamation, when President Richard Nixon permanently established the observance of the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in the United States. Members phkrause Posted June 19, 2017 Author Members Posted June 19, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: How Long Has Father’s Day Been Celebrated in the United States? Actually, you have a woman to thank for Father’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd came up with the idea after listening to a church sermon about celebrating Mother’s Day in 1909. Her mother had died and her father, a veteran of the Civil War, was raising six children by himself. The first celebration was in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. She wanted this first Father’s Day to be held on June 5, which was her own father’s birthday, but more time was required to set it up. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did It Take So Long for Father’s Day to Be Made Official? Woodrow Wilson supported the idea and wanted to attend the Father’s Day ceremony in Spokane in 1916 but didn’t because there had been some jokes about it being a commercial holiday in newspapers. He did issue a proclamation in 1914 in support of Mother’s Day. Calvin Coolidge made a public announcement supporting the idea of Father’s Day in 1924. However, proclaiming it a holiday was a long time in coming. Finally, interest grew sufficiently, and Father’s Day was recognized in a proclamation by Lyndon Johnson in 1966 as the third Sunday in June. Under Richard Nixon in 1972, it became a permanent holiday nationwide. Do Other Countries Celebrate Father’s Day? Many countries celebrate their own version of Father’s Day. The date it is celebrated depends on the country, and many, but not all, are tied to special holy days. Germany celebrates Father’s Day 40 days after Easter, on Ascension Day. American men would probably enjoy the way German fathers celebrate the day. They fill a wagon full of food, schnapps, and beer and head out into the wilderness for some male bonding time. When they tire of that, they head to a beer garden. Father’s day in Canada isn’t just limited to biological fathers. A Father’s Day greeting can be extended to any male who is important to someone’s life. In Italy, Father’s Day is celebrated by going to church on St. Joseph’s Day. Afterward, they greet their fathers on the street, and finish the day by having a big feast and festivities such as dancing, music and donkey races. Mexico celebrates by getting dad up off the couch - after he has received cards and gifts (yes, they give ties too) and been served all his favorite foods - with a 21-kilometer race for fathers and their children that is run across Mexico City. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Is Credited With Having Created the First Father’s Day Card? A 4,000-year-old clay tablet with a message printed with a stylus was discovered amid the ruins of Babylon written by someone named Elmesu to his father. This is the first proven instance of a son honoring a father in writing. In the tablet, Elmesu wished for his father to have a long life and good health. It is unknown whether a tie accompanied the gift. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Proverbs 29;2

He is the father of actress Angelina Jolie, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the drama Girl, Interrupted (1999). Jolie has had a lifelong dysfunctional relationship with her father, which began when Voight left the family when his daughter was less than a year old. They reconciled when they appeared together in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), but their relationship again deteriorated. They did not speak for six-and-a-half years, but began rebuilding their relationship in the wake of her mother’s death in 2007. Forkball Spitball Knuckleball Split-finger fastball The Spitball I'd say! Answer: A spitball is an illegal baseball pitch in which the ball has been altered by the application of saliva, or some other foreign substance. This technique alters the wind resistance and weight on one side of the ball, causing it to move in an atypical manner. In August 1920, Ray Chapman was killed when he was struck in the temple by a spitball thrown by pitcher Carl Mays. Following the 1920 season, the spitball was banned, except for existing spitballers who were grandfathered in and allowed to keep throwing the pitch until they retired. Seventeen existing spitballers were granted this exemption. Burleigh Grimes lasted the longest, retiring in 1934. Members phkrause Posted June 20, 2017 Author Members Posted June 20, 2017 15 hours ago, phkrause said: What Were the Rosenbergs Charged with Doing? Former activists with organizations linked to the U.S. Communist Party, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were arrested in July and August 1950, respectively, and charged with conspiracy to commit espionage. Specifically, they were said to have worked with others, including David Greenglass, Ethel's brother, to gather and pass along to Soviet agents critical information about the workings of the atomic bomb. In addition to Greenglass, who worked on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory, others charged in the espionage case included Harry Gold, said to have acted as a courier for Greenglass; German scientist Klaus Fuchs; and engineer Morton Sobell. While all of the other alleged conspirators confessed to their roles in the spy ring, the Rosenbergs went to their deaths proclaiming their innocence. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Were the Executions Considered Justified at the Time? The executions followed a few years of appeals and trials that coincided with the hysteria over Communist infiltration of American society. These were the years ruled by Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee, which put several Hollywood notables through questioning that resulted in the blacklisting of several artists. Fear of the Red Scare was so prevalent that it fed into the desire to punish the Rosenbergs. By 1953, the very idea of helping the Soviets was not one that anyone liked, and the government had little sympathy for the Rosenbergs. Part of the reason for assigning the death sentence was that prosecutors hoped it would motivate the Rosenbergs to name more names, with a mere prison sentence instead of death as the incentive. However, the Rosenbergs refused, claiming innocence right up until their electrocutions. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Implicated Ethel in the Espionage Conspiracy? Despite her involvement in radical politics as a young woman, Ethel may have been an innocent victim of her brother's desire to protect his wife, Ruth. Decades after the spy ring was busted, David Greenglass admitted that he had falsely claimed that it was Ethel who had typed up his notes of information to be passed to the Soviets. Years after Ethel had been executed for her alleged complicity in the spy ring, Greenglass told a New York Times reporter, ¨I frankly think my wife did the typing, but I don't remember.¨ Greenglass went on to say that he had no regrets and that ¨my wife is more important to me than my sister. Or my mother or my father, O.K.?¨ 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Is Ethel Rosenberg's Execution Now Seen as Completely Unjustified? After revelations of perjury on the part of David Greenglass and revelations that information from the Venona Program, which monitored Soviet spy traffic, cast Ethel's supposed role into doubt, it's generally thought that Julius was a spy and should have gotten a prison sentence, and Ethel should have been released. There are still those who claim Ethel was a spy, but the evidence points in the opposite direction. Ethel's own mother didn't believe her, warning her to start naming names, and the rabbi overseeing the spiritual rites at the execution actually asked her at the last minute to name names. Ethel simply claimed she had none. What's even worse is that when Ethel was electrocuted, the initial three shocks, which were enough to kill Julius, apparently were not enough to kill her, and she had to undergo two additional massive shocks for a crime, as far as the current evidence shows, she did not commit. 16 hours ago, phkrause said: Did Anyone Try to Defend the Rosenbergs? Yes, there was a groundswell of support for them internationally as the execution date drew near. They did have their supporters; for example, The Nation magazine argued in favor of the Rosenbergs' innocence, and there were increasing international calls to stop the execution from going forward. Protestors in London had requested Queen Elizabeth II try to intervene as well. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to push back against the anti-communist environment that was bent on punishing the Rosenbergs. ALS is characterised by muscle spasticity and rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle wasting. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing.
