Which U.S. President was born on the Fourth of July?

Answer: John Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President of the United States, was born on July 4, 1872. Coolidge was elected as the 29th Vice President in 1920 and succeeded to the Presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. He is the only U.S. President to be born on Independence Day. Coolidge was known for his quiet demeanor, which earned him the nickname "Silent Cal." During Coolidge's presidency, the United States experienced the period of rapid economic growth that characterized the "Roaring Twenties."

No. In his speech to the Continental Congress on June 16, 1775, he said he thought his military experience and abilities might not be good enough to serve as commander. However, he said he did not wish to profit from taking command of the Continental Army but would keep a tally of expenses. The pay he turned down was $500 per month. His commission was drafted the following day. During the war, major generals, such as Benedict Arnold and Alexander Hamilton, were paid $166 per month. Brigadier generals were paid $125 and included George Clinton, who also served several times as governor of New York and as vice president under Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

How Did Washington’s Wife Find Out He Was Commanding the Army?

He wrote her a letter, which is dated June 18. In the letter, he tells her he tried his best to avoid being appointed. He said it was not only because he would be away from her and the family but that it was a great responsibility for others to entrust him with this position. Then he says he knows he will be unhappy leaving her there alone and that she might want to stay in Alexandria, Virginia, or spend a lot of time with friends. Washington also tells her that he has prepared a will in the event something should happen to him. He closes the letter by telling her that he bought two new suits and included the price for the suits and cloth.

What Was Washington’s First Priority as Commander?

Washington described the army as "a mixed multitude of people under very little discipline, order or government" when he took command formally. Since he had previous experience from the Seven Years War, he decided to pattern the army on the British. Discipline was key to his whipping these raw troops into a real army. He separated the distinctions between officers and the enlisted men. He also used punishments for infractions. These included use of the pillory, lash and court-martials. Washington’s army ended up with 26 infantry regiments composed of 728 soldiers each, along with one regiment of artillerymen and riflemen. The men who enlisted until the end of 1776 totaled 20,372.

What Was One of Washington’s Best Decisions During the War?

On January 6, 1777, George Washington wrote to Dr. William Shippen Jr., ordering him to inoculate all of the forces that came through Philadelphia.  Washington himself had survived a bout with smallpox and realized how dangerous it would be if it broke out among the troops.  Both Benedict Arnold and Benjamin Franklin, expressed fears that the virus would be the army's ultimate downfall.  Washington conducted the first mass inoculation of an army at the height of a war that immeasurably transformed the international system. Defeating the British was impressive, but simultaneously taking on Variola was a risky stroke of genius.  As a result, the number of deaths from smallpox among the troops dropped from 17 percent to 1 percent.

How many people signed the Declaration of Independence?

Answer: 56 men signed the Declaration of Independence. The first and most famous signature on the engrossed copy was that of John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress. Hancock's large, flamboyant signature became iconic, and John Hancock emerged in the United States as an informal synonym for "signature". The oldest signer was Benjamin Franklin, 70 years old when he scrawled his name on the parchment. The youngest was Edward Rutledge, a lawyer from South Carolina who was only 26 at the time.

What Day Did the Declaration of Independence Actually Get Proposed?

Though we celebrate July 4 as the day Continental Congress signed the Declaration, in truth, it was proposed two days earlier and hadn’t been signed by all 13 state delegates until late summer. The only significance of July 4 is that’s the day the Continental Congress officially accepted the Declaration of Independence, proposed two days earlier by the Virginia delegate, Richard Henry Lee.

How Did George Washington July 4, 1776?

By handing out a double ration of rum for his army and ordering an artillery salute. Most people mistakenly think Washington signed the Declaration of Independence (he was our first president after all), but in fact, Washington was the head of the Continental Army at the time the Declaration was signed. On July 9, 1776, he read the Declaration aloud to the army, as instructed by John Hancock.

What Other Countries Celebrate the Fourth of July?

Though you may think Independence Day would be a holiday reserved for the U.S. alone, the truth is, there are a number of countries that celebrate July 4th for one reason or another. The Philippines celebrate “Republic Day” on July 4 - the day the United States formally recognized the independence of their country in 1946.

Rwanda celebrates “Liberation Day”: marking the end of the Rwandan genocide in 1994.

Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and somewhat ironically, England, host celebrations both for those who U.S. citizens who have emigrated or work on a military base and to try and generate more tourism in the summer time.

How Many Hot Dogs do Americans Eat Every July 4?

According to Forbes, 155 million hot dogs get eaten each year on July 4. Additionally, Americans will spend $152.3 million on chips and dip, $193.6 million on burgers and over half a billion on all the fixings. But the biggest revenue driver of all? Beer, of course. Americans will spend $341.4 million on beer, more than the cost of burgers and hot dogs combined.

Obvious answer, right? Wrong! The Declaration of Independence actually was drafted on a laptop by Thomas Jefferson - but not the kind we're used to. He used a writing desk that fit on your lap and was aptly named - a laptop.

Answer: The Declaration of Independence is the statement adopted by the Second Continental Congress meeting at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall) in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies, then at war with the Kingdom of Great Britain, regarded themselves as thirteen newly independent sovereign states, and no longer under British rule. The famous document begins: "When in the course of human events..."

What was the bikini named after?

Answer: On July 5, 1946, French designer Louis Reard unveiled a two-piece swimsuit at the Piscine Molitor, a popular swimming pool in Paris. Parisian showgirl Micheline Bernardini modeled the new fashion, which Reard dubbed “bikini,” inspired by a news-making U.S. atomic test that took place off the Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean earlier that week. Made out of a scant 30 inches of fabric, Reard promoted his creation as “smaller than the world’s smallest bathing suit.” He called his creation the bikini, named after the Bikini Atoll.

What Motivated the Players to Throw the Series?

The owner of the White Sox, Charles Comiskey, didn’t have too many fans in the Sox clubhouse. The 1919 team was stacked with talent and had won a World Series just two years before, so most players believed they had earned a big payday. But players couldn’t freely move between teams or demand trades like they can today. There was no players’ union and at the time, a reverse clause existed in baseball, meaning if a player were to leave their current team, they would be restricted from playing anywhere else. And while the 1919 White Sox had the biggest payroll in baseball that year, it didn’t stop players from putting together a plan to earn a little extra for throwing the Series.

19 hours ago, phkrause said:

Which Players Were Involved?

Of the 18 players on the 1919 White Sox roster, eight stood trial in July of 1921: Arnold “Chick” Gandil, Eddie Cicotte, Oscar Felsch, “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, Fred McMullin, Charles “Swede” Risberg, George “Buck” Weaver and Claude “Lefty” Williams.

The ten players who were not implicated (along with manager Kid Gleason) received bonuses from Comiskey in 1920 for the amount they would have received if they’d won the Series (an extra $1,500 - or $18,447 today).

19 hours ago, phkrause said:

What Were the Results of the Trial?

Prior to the start of the trial, two of the accused players - Eddie Cicotte and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson - signed confessions stating they were involved in the crime, however, those confessions were mysteriously absent from the trial, which lasted only a few days with a three-hour jury deliberation before all eight players were acquitted. The players and jury allegedly headed to a local restaurant afterward for celebratory drinks.

But, if you thought the story ended there, you’re sorely mistaken. Newly appointed baseball commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis (yes, that’s his real name), suspended all eight players indefinitely, rendering them ineligible to play in both the major and minor leagues for the rest of their lives.

19 hours ago, phkrause said:

Did Any of the Players Contest the Suspension?

Yes, most players made a push to either get their way back into professional baseball, but all came up short. Buck Weaver and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson have perhaps the two biggest claims to innocence. It’s well-known that Buck Weaver did not actually participate in throwing the Series, but did know about what was happening. He refused to take part but was still kicked out of baseball for not ratting out his teammates. Weaver fought the suspension on three separate occasions but was never welcomed back into the league. In both 2003 and 2005, members of Weaver’s family tried to drum up support to have Buck’s name scrubbed from the record, but had no success.

At the time of the controversy, Joe Jackson was one of the best players in baseball, so naturally, his suspension raised the most eyebrows. Though Jackson initially signed a confession, his gameplay during all eight games of the Series was not reflective of a player trying to throw a ballgame. Jackson had the highest batting average of both teams, the Series' only home run, and an incredible game on the field as well: he threw out five baserunners and had no errors.

19 hours ago, phkrause said:

Did Jackson Ever Play Professionally Again?

Despite the case in his favor, Jackson never played professionally again. He moved to Greenville, South Carolina, with his wife and opened a series of businesses, including a liquor store where he had a famous encounter with another famous ball player, Ty Cobb.  One of the better known stories of Jackson’s post-major league life took place at his liquor store. Ty Cobb and sportswriter Grantland Rice entered the store, with Jackson showing no sign of recognition towards Cobb. After making his purchase, Ty Cobb finally asked Jackson, “Don’t you know me, Joe?” Jackson replied, “Sure, I know you, Ty, but I wasn’t sure you wanted to know me. A lot of them don’t.”

Answer: On this day in 1975, Arthur Ashe defied overwhelming odds to defeat Jimmy Connors and become the first African-American man to ever win Wimbledon. Ashe had never beaten Connors in any of their previous encounters, but Ashe played an almost perfect game of tactical tennis to win in four sets. In 1983, after double-bypass surgery, Ashe was infected with HIV during a blood transfusion. After revealing his disease to the world in 1992, he set about educating the public about HIV and AIDS. He died of AIDS-related complications in 1993.
