Stewart was convicted of conspiracy and obstruction of justice related to her selling of shares of drug maker ImClone Systems. Authorities had argued that she used inside information of an FDA ruling to sell her stock ahead of the negative news and made false statements about it when asked. Stewart was found guilty of felony charges of conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators. Ronald Reagan declared July National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday in July National Ice Cream Day back in 1984. In his proclamation, he called ice cream a “nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over 90% of the United States.” It was almost enough for Reagan to get his own Ben & Jerry’s flavor with jelly beans and little bits of the “Berlin Wall” inside, but as of today, there’s only one president with his own Ben & Jerry’s flavor: Barack Obama’s “Yes we Pecan!” flavor. A play on Obama’s “Yes we Can” campaign slogan, the flavor was made of “Amber Waves of Buttery Ice Cream With Roasted Non-Partisan Pecans.” On 7/16/2017 at 4:03 PM, phkrause said: How Did Ben & Jerry’s Get Started? In 1978, two best friends - named Ben and Jerry, of course - opened an ice cream stand in a converted gas station with only some basic training and a $12,000 investment (they were originally going to go with bagels, but found the equipment too expensive). Ben had a nose condition that made it tough for him to smell, so to get a better “mouthfeel” the two decided to include chunks in their ice cream. And the rest is history. As Ben & Jerry’s began to take off from their humble beginnings in Vermont, the big fish in the ice cream game - Haagen Daz - attempted to limit their distribution. Ben and Jerry launched a campaign to get their fans to call their competitors headquarters and demand they back off. It worked! Today, they have scoop shops in over 20 countries. On 7/16/2017 at 4:03 PM, phkrause said: Häagen-Dazs was Started by a Couple Living in What Country? If the Häagen-Dazs name sounds Danish to you, or if that map of Denmark on the carton makes you think it's Danish, then that's good news for the company's founders. That's exactly what they were going for. But that doesn't mean it's a Danish company. Or that the founders are Danish. Or that there's really any connection whatsoever between the food and the country. Häagen-Dazs was established by Reuben and Rose Mattus in the Bronx, New York, in 1961. On 7/16/2017 at 4:03 PM, phkrause said: Who Invented Ice Cream? Flavored ice has been documented as far back as the second century B.C. with some of the biggest names in history having enjoyed a variation of what we’d today call “ice cream.” Alexander the Great, Caesar, Marco Polo and King Charles I all enjoyed ice flavored with fruits and juices. George Washington reportedly spent $200 (around $3,000 today) for ice cream in the summer of 1790. Thomas Jefferson had a recipe for ice cream that was supposedly to die for. The point is, ice cream has been loved throughout history and yet, there’s no one person who can be credited with its creation. The first time ice cream showed up on a menu was at the first café in Paris - Café Procope - in 1660. In the U.S., the first advertisement for ice cream came in 1777 but it wasn’t until 1851 when the grandfather of modern ice cream, Jacob Fussell, opened his factory in Baltimore that ice cream spread from a delicacy for the elite to a treat for the general public. Goodbye Yellow Brickle Road Blondies Are a Swirls Best Friend Karamel Sutra Licorice of Arabia Answer: Happy National Ice Cream Day! Ben & Jerry’s is known for their wild and wacky flavors. However, a few years ago, the company had to come out and make an official statement to consumers that the “All of the Bacon & Eggs You Have” flavor isn’t a real flavor. While it exists only via Photoshop, it was imagined to be Scotch-flavored ice cream with, well, a whole lot of bacon and eggs. This fictional flavor went viral when a fan of the NBC show “Parks and Recreation” was inspired to create the fake flavor based on the TV character Ron Swanson’s love of breakfast foods. Olive Garden Bennigan's Hooters Domino's Pizza Answer: Hooters Air was an airline founded by Hooters restaurant owner Robert Brooks. Brooks initially envisioned Hooters Air as an unconventional means of generating awareness for the Hooters restaurant brand. Two "Hooters Girls," dressed in their restaurant uniforms, were on each flight assisting the in-flight crews with hospitality duties. All planes were painted in Hooters' orange and white company colors featuring the company logo, and mascot ("Hootie the Owl"), on the vertical stabilizer. The airline ceased operations in 2006. Members phkrause Posted July 18, 2017 Author Members Posted July 18, 2017 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Did Walt Disney Have Support for the Idea of Disneyland? Today, we recognize Walt Disney as a creative genius, known for his many remarkable ideas and achievements. But that wasn’t always the case. Disney was often told that his ideas were impossible and his proposal for a theme park where children and adults could both have fun was no exception. Almost everyone who Disney told about his theme park idea felt it would fall flat and wouldn’t turn a profit. Perhaps most prominent among the naysayers was Walt’s own brother, Roy, who managed the finances of Walt Disney Productions and thought the project was an awful idea considering the company was already in debt and hadn’t turned a profit from any of their post-war films. To make Disneyland a reality, Walt Disney took a tremendous risk where failure meant an almost certain ripple-effect across everything else he had already built. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Was Opening Day a Great Success? Not exactly. Organizers referred to July 17, as “Black Sunday” considering how many things went wrong that day. Over 28,000 people showed up on a sweltering hot day and the park had just barely finished construction. It should come as no surprise that a few mishaps occurred, including concessions running out of food, broken down rides and a gas leak found in Fantasyland. As if this weren't stressful enough for the organizers, the garbage trucks didn't arrive as expected, leaving unwanted garbage hanging around. Despite the pandemonium and some critical press in the aftermath, the day was regarded, on the whole, as a great success. Not because it ran smoothly, but because of the excitement that spread from person to person as the wonders of Disneyland became a reality in front of their eyes. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What was the Last Ride that Walt Disney Oversaw the Creation of? Today there's probably no better known installment in any Disney theme park than Pirates of the Caribbean. And that's fitting, because it also happens to be the last ride Walt Disney himself oversaw the creation of. Sadly, he passed away three months before it opened. But he saw to it that it opened in style. He hired an actor to hijack the press night, steer the media toward the ride, and blow through the front doors to open it up. It's tough to imagine a better way to handle the night's proceedings. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Problem at Splash Mountain Caused Disney to Hire a Fleet of People for a Rather Voyeuristic Job? If you've ever ridden Splash Mountain, you know there comes a point where a camera snaps a shot as you plummet down the waterfall. And if you've ever met an exhibitionist, then you know they just love cameras. You see where we're going with this? People started using this opportunity to flash the camera, like to the point where the ride earned the nickname "Flash Mountain." People even started websites dedicated to compiling these photos. So Disneyland proved once and for all that they are not the "happiest place on earth," and hired employees to crack down on the behavior. We're not sure what the pay was, but we're under the impression it offered great benefits. Unfortunately for the employees, they did their job too well. The number of flashings dropped and eventually Disney reassigned them. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Vodka Orange juice Lemonade Tomato juice Probably Vodka!! Answer: An Arnold Palmer is a beverage of iced tea and lemonade, named after American golfer Arnold Palmer. According to Arnold Palmer, he was in the habit of drinking iced tea with lemonade at home, and in 1960 at the U.S. Open at the Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver, he ordered the non-alcoholic drink at the bar. A woman sitting nearby overheard him, and ordered "that Palmer drink", thus giving the beverage its name. The drink has been sold under the Arnold Palmer name by Innovative Flavors since 2001, with Palmer's picture and signature on the bottle. Ailurophobia Phasmophobia Coulrophobia Triskaidekaphobia Answer: Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Mussolini and Hitler, all suffered from ailurophobia, the extreme fear of cats. Ailurophobes suffer from abnormal fears about the risk of being physically harmed by a cat or the superstitious idea that cats are evil. Like all fears and phobias, Ailurophobia is a protective mechanism created by the unconscious mind. Although it’s difficult for most cat lovers to understand why anyone would be afraid of cats, Ailurophobia is very real, and can be a genuine problem for people who suffer from it. Members phkrause Posted July 19, 2017 Author Members Posted July 19, 2017 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Did FDR Decide to Run for a Third Term? America was coming out of the Great Depression. However, in the fall of 1939, Germany had invaded Poland. In return, the allied countries of Great Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand had declared war on Germany. In May, France fell, and Germany was posing a threat to Great Britain. The Democratic Party decided that Roosevelt was the only person capable of winning against Wendell Willkie, who was persuasive, outspoken and popular among Republicans. In the election, Roosevelt won 449 of the electoral votes plus the popular vote. Wilkie came in with 82 electoral votes and took the states of Maine, Vermont, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, Iowa, Indiana, and Michigan. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Happened After FDR Was Elected for a Fourth Term? Roosevelt was once again elected in 1944. Because the United States was at war with the Axis powers while World War II raged, it was not surprising that FDR was once again elected by a large majority of electoral votes. Although the Allies had turned the tide of the war, Roosevelt’s health declined from arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. A few months after his inauguration and seven months before the Allies won the war, Roosevelt died of a stroke. With his passing, his vice president, Harry Truman, was sworn in as the new president of the United States. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Amendment Was Passed as a Result of Roosevelt’s Multiple Elections? The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution was passed in the Congress in 1947, limiting the number of times a president could run for the office. Enough states had ratified the amendment by 1951 to add it as a Constitutional amendment. However, the sitting president can still serve for 10 years. If a president leaves or dies in office during the middle of his term and only has two years left to serve, the new president can serve out the remainder and still run for election and serve as president an additional two terms. The catch is that if the new president serves more than a remaining two-year period, he can only run for the presidential election, get elected and serve one full term. This has never happened in U.S. history. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: Franklin Delano Roosevelt Created Which Charity? The March of Dimes Foundation is a United States nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. It was founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938 to combat polio. It has since taken up promoting general health for pregnant women and babies. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Because Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes, a dime was chosen to honor him after his death.
