When Did the Women's Suffrage Movement Begin?

Although women began arguing for their right to vote in the early 1800s, it wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that the movement became well organized and a force to be reckoned with. In 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott held a convention to increase public awareness of the issue and to demand voting rights for women. This convention is often cited as the start of the organized movement for women's suffrage. Four years after the convention, activist Susan B. Anthony joined the movement and devoted the remainder of her life to the fight to win the vote for women.

When Did the 19th Amendment Become the Law of the Land?

Although both houses of Congress voted in 1919 to approve the 19th amendment, it would not become law until it was ratified by legislatures in at least two-thirds of the 48 states that were then part of the Union. On August 18, 1920, almost 14 months after Congress approved the amendment, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the proposed addition to the U.S. Constitution, giving it the two-thirds majority necessary to become law.

What States Allowed Women to Vote Before the 19th Amendment?

The women's suffrage movement found a much more receptive audience west of the Mississippi where several states gave women the vote even before Congress passed the 19th Amendment. Wyoming was first to give women the vote in 1890 and was followed that same decade by Colorado in 1893 and Idaho and Utah in 1896. For the next 14 years, nothing much happened on the women's suffrage front at the state level. But in 1910 Washington State gave its female citizens the vote and was quickly followed by California in 1911; Arizona, Kansas, and Oregon in 1912; and Montana and Nevada in 1914. Back east, New York approved women's voting rights in 1917. The next year, Michigan, Oklahoma, and South Dakota followed suit.

How Has Suffrage Been Modified Over the Years?

While the 19th Amendment technically gave the right to vote to all women regardless of race, women of color, especially African American women, still faced barriers that made voting difficult if not outright impossible. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was a key addition to the growing list of rights enshrined in national law because it finally required states and private citizens to stop interfering with citizens of any color who were trying to vote.

Another change was the lowering of the voting age from 21 to 18 via the 26th Amendment in 1971. Previously, only those over 21 were able to vote, but as the Vietnam War dragged on, support grew for lowering the voting age to match the age at which people could be drafted to fight in wars. As with the 19th Amendment and voting rights for women, the 26th Amendment made into a national right something that individual states had been doing for years. Georgia lowered its voting age to 18 in 1943. In 1954, then-President Eisenhower added his vocal support to the idea of lowering the voting age nationwide.

Which presidential candidate famously said, "Read my lips: No new taxes"?

Answer: "Read my lips: no new taxes" was a pledge spoken by presidential candidate George H. W. Bush at the 1988 Republican National Convention as he accepted his party's nomination. The impact of the election promise was considerable, and many supporters of Bush believe it helped him win the presidential election. As presidents sometimes must, Bush raised taxes. His words were used against him by then-Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton in a devastating attack ad during the 1992 presidential campaign. Bush lost his bid for re-election to Clinton.

Why Did FDR take the United States Off the Gold Standard?

Removing the United States from the Gold Standard increased the amount of money in the U.S. Treasury and was part of FDR’s efforts to improve the economy. The Great Depression in the 1930s was frightening for many people, particularly after the stock market crash of 1929 and runs on the banks.

By 1933, unemployment was high, and almost 50 percent of the nation’s banks had failed. This adversely affected consumer confidence, and those who could afford it turned to hoarding gold instead of paper currency. FDR’s “bank holiday” of four days was the beginning of an effort to shore up the economy. To improve consumer confidence, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation was created to protect bank customer accounts.

What Earlier Step Paved the Way for Repeal of the Gold Standard?

In April 1933, the order went out that all gold certificates with denominations over $100 and gold coins had to be turned in, for which the people would receive legal tender money. The last date to turn over gold was May 1, and the price was set at $20.67 per troy ounce. Ten days after the deadline, the government had received $300 million in gold coins and even more in gold certificates.

Several months later, Congress repealed the gold clause through passage of a joint resolution. This clause had required debtors to repay in like. In other words, if gold had been borrowed, it had to be repaid in gold of the same fineness and weight and not in paper money. Although the constitutionality of removing the gold clause was presented before the Supreme Court in several cases, the Supreme Court upheld the repeal.

What Was the Price of Gold After the Government Buy Back?

The government raised the price of gold to $35 per troy ounce in 1934. The immediate effect of this is that it increased the value of the gold held by the Federal Reserve by 69 percent. The price stayed at $35 per troy ounce until 1971, when President Nixon announced that dollars would no longer be converted to gold at a price that was fixed. It wasn’t until 1974 that Americans were once again permitted to buy and own gold, when President Ford signed into law “Gold Freedom Day.” By the end of December 1974, the price of gold had risen to more than $195 per ounce.

Where Is All the Gold Stored?

The United States Bullion Depository, better known as Fort Knox, is located in Fort Knox, Kentucky. This is where the bullion reserves are stored for the federal government. Gold does not come in or go out of the repository, except for tiny amounts tested for auditing. The largest amount of gold held at Fort Knox was toward the end of 1941. At that time, it held 649.6 million ounces.

During World War II, America’s most valuable documents were stored there for safe keeping. They were the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. These documents remained at Fort Knox until 1944, when it became apparent that Allied forces would win the war. Then they were returned to Washington, D.C.

Answer: Mary Kay and Johnny was a situation comedy starring real-life married couple Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns. It was the first sitcom broadcast on a network television in the United States and debuted on November 18, 1947. Mary Kay and Johnny was the first series to show a married couple sharing a bed (not The Brady Bunch, as you might have heard) and the first to incorporate the leading lady’s pregnancy into the storyline (not I Love Lucy).

How Did the Allies Prepare for D-Day?

Considering Hitler had spent considerable resources building the “Atlantic Wall” - 2,400 miles of German defense along the coast of France - the Allied forces needed to get creative in executing their strike.

The biggest strategic maneuver that contributed to the success of the operation was the Allied deception of where they intended to attack. Through the use of fake radio transmissions, equipment, double agents and a ghost army led by General George Patton, the Allied forces were able to convince the Germans that the planned assault would take place at the narrowest point of the English Channel, Pas-de-Calais. The mission was called “Operation Overlord."

This allowed the Allies to strike by surprise at Normandy, catching the Germans off-guard and allowing them less time to rally troops from other points of defense.

21 hours ago, phkrause said:

Who Led the Charge for Operation Overlord?

General Dwight D. Eisenhower (who would later become the 34th president of the United States) led the charge as commander. He famously told the troops prior to the assault:

“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.”

21 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Many Allies Died During the Initial Assault?

Considering the circumstances, accurate record keeping of casualties was particularly difficult for D-Day. Of the 156,000 Allied troops deployed, it’s believed over 4,400 of them lost their lives. The majority of those were American soldiers at the landing of Omaha Beach, where an estimated 3,686 troops were either injured, missing or killed.

21 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Did D-Day Impact the Outcome of the War?

In one word, significantly. Because the deception performed by the Allies was so successful, the Germans still believed there was an Allied invasion coming at Pas-de-Calais even after the assault on Normandy had been completed. By the time Hitler began mobilizing support for those stationed at Normandy, it was too late. By late August 1944, Allied troops had taken control of northern France, including the liberation of Paris at the Battle of Normandy.

Not only was the loss a significant blow to the German’s perception of impenetrability, it also cut off the Nazis from sending support from France to help support the Russian invasion to the east.

By the following spring, Hitler was dead and the Allies had accepted the unconditional surrender of the Nazis.

Answer: Baskin-Robbins is the world's largest chain of ice cream specialty shop restaurants. Based in Canton, Massachusetts, it was founded in 1945 by Burt Baskin and Irv Robbins in Glendale, California. The company is known for its "31 flavors" slogan, with the idea that a customer could have a different flavor every day of any month. Baskin and Robbins believed that people should be able to sample flavors until they found one they wanted to buy. The company has introduced more than 1,000 flavors since 1945.

Answer: Franklin Pierce was the 14th president of the United States, serving from 1853 to 1857. Pierce was arrested while serving as president for running down a woman while on horseback. Pierce was never convicted of a crime connected to the incident, due to what the courts described as insufficient evidence. Franklin Pierce, the youngest man to be elected president to that point, chose to affirm his oath of office on a law book rather than swear it on a Bible, as all his predecessors except John Quincy Adams had done. Who Led the 1913 Expedition to the Top of Mount McKinley?

Harold Stuck, an experienced amateur mountaineer and missionary in Alaska, co-led the expedition with friend and fellow mountaineer, Harry Karstens. They were also accompanied by Walter Harper - a native Alaskan who would eventually be the very first person to reach the top - and a theology student named Robert Tatum.

The summit took the group from March until this day, June 7, to complete (today it takes an average climber about 2-3 weeks). Harsh weather and a fire at one of their camps ended up causing delays in travel. But, the group eventually succeeded on June 7, 1913.

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

Had Anyone Previously Tried to Climb to the Top?

Yes. In addition to a group that reached the north peak in 1913, there’s the story of Frederick Cook who summited McKinley in 1906 - or so he claimed.

Cook definitely climbed some of McKinley, but considering he was technically the first, there was no way to really discredit that the photos he shared upon his return weren’t from the actual south peak summit. That is, until 1956, when a Cook discreditor and two Cook believers (including his daughter) made the climb to try and match his photos to actual viewpoints from the mountain.

Needless to say, things quickly went south for Mr. Cook. The summit shot was actually just a picture from 5,400 feet - just over 25% of the way to the top. Ouch.

What’s the Controversy Surrounding the Name of the Mountain?

Mount McKinley - or as it’s legally known today, Denali - has had a rich history of name changes. During Russian occupation of Alaska in the early 1800’s, the mountain was known as Bolshaya Gora which means “big mountain” in Russian (really creative).

It later became Densmore’s Peak before inheriting the McKinley namesake in 1917 to commemorate President William McKinley, who had been assassinated in 1901.

Finally, in 2015, President Obama resolved a 40-year pending request to have the mountain changed back to its original, native name, Denali. The name change became official on August 30, 2015, and caused a bit of an uproar from certain groups, primarily Ohio conservatives who felt the name change was an affront to President McKinley (who had been from Ohio).

23 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Many People Succeed at Climbing McKinley Each Year?

During the climbing season from late April to July, a maximum of 1,500 people are allowed to attempt the climb. Of those, about 50% succeed. Those that don’t usually fall victim to illness, bad weather or aren’t prepared for the physical demands of the mountain.
