Who was Carson’s Last Guest on The Tonight Show?

Though Carson’s official last time on air was May 22, 1992, the last show with guests was actually the night before, May 21, 1992. That’s because Carson reserved the final night for a compilation of favorite clips and sketches from throughout the show’s 30-year history.

The last show with guests had two of the biggest stars of the early 90’s joining Carson at the desk: Bette Midler and Robin Williams.

Williams went up first and delivered his usual comic antics, ranting on current events with Johnny including the ‘92 election cycle. But it was Midler who stole the show (and was Carson’s true last guest). She serenaded Carson with a touching rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)”. A moment regarded as the greatest talk show moment of all time by TV Guide Magazine.

What Guest Appeared on the Tonight Show More Than Any Other?

Bob Hope appeared on The Tonight Show a whopping 131 times, more than any other guest. You know what's really impressive about that number? Carson couldn't stand the guy. Carson was resentful of the fact that Hope was the only person at NBC who was a bigger star than Carson himself. And as far as Carson was concerned, Hope wasn't even funny. His writers wrote all his jokes for him. Peter Lassally, producer for the Tonight Show, said "Johnny admired Hope's place in show business, but he was not a great admirer of his work." But Hope was always promoting something, and so therefore always wanted to come on the show. Lassally explained, "We'd get a request, and Johnny would go, 'Again?' And I'd say, “Do you want to tell him no?” And he'd say, “No. You can't turn down Bob Hope."

ps:wow I never knew that!!

Which Celebrities Were Considered to Replace Carson After He Announced His Retirement?

Before the job officially went to Jay Leno, there were a few big name celebrities with their hat in the ring for Carson’s open chair. First, was long-time guest host Joan Rivers, who in the 80s was essentially a shoe-in for the job until she went and started her own competing late-night show at Fox and squandered her relationship with Carson.

Perhaps more notably, David Letterman was initially considered to be Carson’s natural successor. After all, at the time Carson announced his retirement, Letterman hosted Late Night in the time slot directly after The Tonight Show on NBC. Carson wanted Letterman to take the job, but after a long, drawn out battle, the role eventually went to Leno with Letterman leaving NBC to start his own show on CBS.

What’s the Total Number of Times Carson Hosted The Tonight Show?

Over the nearly 30 years Johnny Carson was seated behind that desk in Studio 6B at Rockefeller Center and then Studio 1 in Burbank, he hosted over 23,000 guests in a total of 4,531 appearances. Though everyone loved Johnny, there were some pretty exciting guest hosts over the years, including Frank Sinatra, Don Rickles, and Burt Reynolds.

Which author, born on this day in 1859, created the fictional character Sherlock Holmes?

Answer: On May 22, 1859, Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1890 his novel, A Study in Scarlet, introduced the character of Detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle would go on to write 60 stories about Sherlock Holmes. Answer: The 72 stone steps before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have become known as the "Rocky Steps" as a result of their appearance in the film Rocky in which the character runs up the steps to the song "Gonna Fly Now". Tourists often mimic Rocky's famous climb, a metaphor for an underdog or an everyman rising to a challenge. Each year, tens of thousands of people, young and old, recreate the scene from the legendary movie and make the trek up the steps.

How Did Bonnie and Clyde Meet?

Bonnie, born in Rowena, Texas, lost her father when she was 4 years old. Shortly thereafter, her mother moved the family, which included Bonnie and two siblings, to Cement City, a suburb on the western edge of Dallas. Clyde was born into a farming family near Telico, southeast of Dallas. In the early 1920s, Barrow's family also relocated to the western side of Dallas.

It is believed that the couple first met on January 5, 1930, at a West Dallas house that belonged to Clarence Clay, a friend of Clyde. According to reliable accounts, Bonnie was in the kitchen making hot chocolate when Clyde dropped in to see his friend. It was reportedly love at first sight for both Bonnie and Clyde. Although Clyde already had an extensive criminal record for one so young and later in 1930 would be jailed on a burglary charge, Bonnie had not strayed from the straight and narrow until she teamed up with Clyde.

When Did Their Joint Crime Spree Begin?

Although popular culture has chosen to remember Bonnie and Clyde as bank robbers, the vast majority of the couple's robbery targets were not banks but small mom-and-pop stores and rural gas stations. Their crimes together began in earnest in early 1932, after Clyde was released from jail after serving time for burglary. Typically, their targets were small businesses, and their take from some of these heists was reportedly as little as $5 or $10. However, eventually, their targets expanded to include perhaps a dozen or so banks. According to the FBI, a number of law enforcement personnel and some civilians were killed by the gang during the course of their crime spree.

Did Bonnie and Clyde Have Accomplices?

For most of their criminal exploits, they were joined by a rotating cast of characters that included Clyde's older brother Buck Barrow and his wife, Blanche; Ralph Fults; Raymond Hamilton; W.D. Jones; Henry Methvin; and Joe Palmer. Only a short time after embarking on a life of crime with her lover, Bonnie and Ralph Fults were arrested for a hardware store robbery gone bad. Although Fults was sentenced to jail time for the crime, Bonnie was released a few months later when a grand jury declined to indict her.

Where were Bonnie and Clyde Killed?

They were killed near Gibsland in Bienville Parish, Louisiana, along a country road. Henry Methven, a member of the gang, supposedly sold out the pair in exchange for immunity from prosecution. However, another story is that police captured Methven’s father, tied him up to a tree and took his car to ambush the robbers along the road, while they hid in the bushes. When Bonnie and Clyde drove up at 9:15 that morning, in a Ford Deluxe they had stolen, six law enforcement officers opened fire, riddling the car with bullets and killing them both.

Answer: Buzkashi (literally "goat pulling" in Persian), is the sport in which horse-mounted players attempt to place a goat carcass in a goal. It is the national sport of Afghanistan where it is often played on Fridays and matches draw thousands of fans. Traditionally, games could last for several days, but in its more regulated tournament version, it has a limited match time. During the rule of the Taliban regime, buzkashi was banned in Afghanistan, as the Taliban considered the game immoral. After the Taliban regime was ousted, the game resumed being played.

Answer: On this day in 1883, The Brooklyn Bridge, linking Brooklyn and Manhattan, was opened to traffic for the first time. To test out the bridge, P.T. Barnum offered, he’d walk his troupe of elephants across it. On May 17, 1884, P.T. Barnum’s 21 elephants, including his star, Jumbo, crossed on foot from Manhattan to a circus showground in Brooklyn. The march of the circus animals across the bridge became an annual springtime ritual. It was a demonstration to the public that the bridge was safe and a brilliant promotional stunt for Barnum’s touring show.

Where Did Hancock Graduate From?

Though his signature may be the most famous in all the world, most people outside of historians know surprisingly little about John Hancock and his history. Considering his place in American history, Hancock generally doesn’t hold the same regard as some of the country’s more prominent founding fathers like Jefferson, Franklin and Adams. Therefore, his rich history often goes untold outside of the academic community.

Hancock was orphaned at an early age and adopted by a wealthy uncle who had no children of his own. He graduated from Harvard University at the ripe young age of 17 years old. After inheriting his uncle’s wealth upon his death, Hancock became one of the richest men in New England. But that didn’t curb his taste for politics. He served on the Boston Assembly and as a major general in the militia before being elected president of the Second Continental Congress.

When was the Declaration of Independence Signed?

You might think this is a “softball” of a trivia question, but the answer isn’t what you think. Though July 4 is our nation’s birthday, it’s not the day the document was actually signed. Here’s the history of the signing of the Declaration of Independence:

On July 1, 1776, Thomas Jefferson’s first draft of the Declaration was presented to the Second Continental Congress. Over the course of the next three days, the committee debated the document’s contents, made revisions and even removed large sections. Finally, in the evening of July 4, Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, marking July 4 forever the date of the birth of a nation.

Due to political process in some states and the wait for the Declaration to be officially engrossed, The Declaration of Independence wasn’t actually signed by Hancock (who was the first to sign given his role as president) until August 2, 1776, with members of Congress continuing to sign through until mid-November that year.

Why Do We Celebrate the 4th of July with Fireworks?

You can thank John Adams for those firecrackers going off until the wee hours of the morning each July 4. In a letter to his wife dated July 3, 1776, Adams writes of what was to come the following day. He writes, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival...It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.”

You might think Adams was counting his chickens before they hatch, but he acknowledges that in the last lines of the letter:

“You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will tryumph in that Days Transaction, even altho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not.”

What Famous Lines Did Hancock Allegedly Proclaim as He Signed the Declaration of Independence?

According to legend, Hancock signed his name largely and clearly so that King George could read it without his spectacles.

“The British ministry can read that name without spectacles; let them double their reward.”

Talk about a mic drop moment. Though Hancock signing the Declaration almost certainly guaranteed he’d be killed by the British if captured, the chances he actually said this are fairly slim. We’ll never know for sure, but there are two key reasons to believe it didn’t happen.

First, because as mentioned above, Congress didn’t sign the Declaration as one large group as displayed in John Trumbull’s famous painting. Without an audience, he’d just be talking to himself.

Second, because the Declaration of Independence wasn’t intended to be addressed to King George III: it was a declaration to the people of the colonies as to why Congress believed secession from Britain was necessary.

Nevertheless, A great story for a great American icon.

What Other Actors were Considered for Starring Roles in the original Star Wars trilogy?

Though it’s hard to imagine anyone but Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher or Harrison Ford playing Luke, Leia or Han, George Lucas considered a number of no-name and semi-famous actors for Star Wars. The casting process took seven months (and happened alongside Brian de Palma’s casting for Carrie) and some very recognizable names came through to audition.

One of the famous stories from the audition room involves Harrison Ford’s eventual casting as Han Solo. Ford had worked with Lucas on his most recent film, American Graffiti, and was invited into the casting room as a friend of Lucas to read dialogue alongside the auditioning actors. Those who auditioned for the role included Burt Reynolds, a young Kurt Russell, Sylvester Stallone and Robert Englund (who later played Freddy Krueger).

Englund’s story is particularly great. Lucas felt Englund was too young for the role of Han and sent him home from the audition rejected. Later that night, Englund met up with close friend and aspiring actor, Mark Hamill, where he told him of his audition earlier that day for “this space movie.” The rest is history.

How was the Iconic Opening Scrawl Created?

By now, we all know and love the famous opening to Star Wars. Beginning with “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” and then leaping into a block of text scrolling across a backdrop of a black, star-speckled universe. In fact, the latest film in the Star Wars franchise was the first not to include the famous text scrawl and they received quite a bit of slack for it.

George Lucas had to fight hard to even make the scrawl happen. Because the Director’s Guild required members to start films with the appropriate opening credits sequence we’ve seen in almost every movie ever, Lucas quit the guild and paid a fine so he could start the film the way he wanted.

Shooting the scrawl wasn’t easy either. A task that with technology today would likely only take a few minutes to program took upwards of three hours to shoot in 1976. That’s because yellow lettering had to be applied to a black background and then a camera operator manually moved the camera slowly from top to bottom to give the scrawl effect. What Lucas wants, Lucas gets!

Did the Cast and Crew Know How the Story Would End?

If you don’t know it by now, the major twist at the end of The Empire Strikes Back is that Darth Vader is Luke’s father.

Though Lucas had the ending in mind stretching all the way back to his original 200-page script he turned in for A New Hope (which was later trimmed to 125 pages with the remaining 75 fleshed out into the next two films), the majority of the cast and crew had no idea. Lucas went so far as to plug a fake page into the script for the final scene between Luke and Vader. In the fake script, Vader reveals that Obi-Wan killed Luke’s father. It wasn’t until moments before the first take that Lucas told Mark Hamill the truth.

Answer: Laverne & Shirley ran on ABC from January 27, 1976, to May 10, 1983. It starred Penny Marshall as Laverne DeFazio and Cindy Williams as Shirley Feeney, single roommates who work as bottlecappers in a fictitious Milwaukee brewery called Shotz Brewery. The show was a spin-off from Happy Days, as the two lead characters were originally introduced on “A Date with Fonzie,” in which the Fonz summons two girls from his little black book to go on a double-date with him and Richie. As with Happy Days, the show was created by Garry Marshall.
