What is the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby?

Answer: The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century. Today, the julep is embedded in Derby ceremony itself: at the Winner's Party, the governor of Kentucky toasts to the victor with a sterling silver julep cup. Each year, almost 120,000 Mint Juleps are served over the two-day period of Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby weekend at Churchill Downs Racetrack. That’s a feat that requires more than 10,000 bottles of Old Forester Mint Julep Ready-to-Serve Cocktail, 1,000 pounds of freshly harvested mint and 60,000 pounds of ice.

Answer: Thanks to the modern measuring techniques, and after an archaeological survey taking more than five years, the total length of the world's largest man-made structure had been finally revealed in 2012, as 13,170.69 miles. The surprising length is more than twice as long as the previous estimates. The Great Wall of China took more than 2,000 years to build. It was built in different areas by different dynasties to protect different territorial borders. The Great Wall, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987.

Which member of The Brady Bunch suffered from "Middle Child Syndrome"?

Answer: Middle child syndrome is the feeling of exclusion by middle children (those with one younger and one older sibling). Probably the most well-known television character to suffer from middle child syndrome is Jan Brady in the sitcom The Brady Bunch. Eve Plumb became famous for playing the middle sister, Jan, on the hit television sitcom from 1969 to 1974. Several episodes of the show centered on Jan's jealousy of older sister Marcia, resulting in the famous "Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" line that has arguably become the quintessential quote of the series.

Which product is named after the surgeon who pioneered antiseptic surgery?

Answer: Ever wondered where Listerine got its name? British surgeon and scientist Joseph Lister was the founder of antiseptic medicine and a pioneer in preventive medicine. While his method, based on the use of antiseptics, is no longer employed, his principle that bacteria must never gain entry to an operation wound remains the basis of surgery to this day. Inspired by Lister, Dr. Joseph Lawrence created LISTERINE mouthwash, which became the first over-the-counter mouthwash sold in the United States in 1914.

What Brought V-E Day About?

Much is made over how the sudden bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brought about the end of the Japanese/Pacific side of the war.  But in Europe, the end was more gradual and, by May, expected. Germany had been in dire straits, attacked on all sides by the British, Americans, and Soviets, as well as from within by resistance groups. Allied forces had made such good progress that by April, Berlin was surrounded, and Hitler committed suicide. At that point, the new German commander, Grand Admiral Karl Donitz, arranged for a surrender.

Where Was Italy in All This?

Germany was not the only major European Axis player; Italy, led by Benito Mussolini, had also been a top power (the Axis was the alliance formed by Germany, Italy, and Japan). You would think that Italy would do what it could to help Germany; however, Italy had surrendered to the Allies back in 1943. (While this was obviously well-known back then, most current stories about the end of World War II tend to focus on Germany, in effect sweeping mentions of Italy's surrender under a rug.) Mussolini had been deposed, and the new Italian leader, General Pietro Badoglio, immediately started negotiating for Italy's surrender to and cooperation with the Allies. This led to massive campaigns by both Germany and the Allies, and with Italy now on the Allied side, Germany was becoming outnumbered and weak, even though Germany continued to fight viciously.

Did All the Fighting Stop on V-E Day?

As you'd expect, not all of the German troops simply gave up. Germany and the Soviets had a major battle on May 9, resulting in the death of about 600 Soviet soldiers, and there were other skirmishes that day as well. However, the physical fighting was pretty much over after May 9.

Emotional battles would continue for decades in the form of post-traumatic stress disorder, but there was another type of emotional battle that didn't get a lot of attention: the loss of purpose. The war effort, particularly in Britain, required a lot of concentration and dedication. With the war in Europe over, some of those who had found a sense of purpose in keeping Britain's home front strong suddenly found themselves at a loss. They were well aware that it was good that the war was over, but now they had to find new avenues in their lives for the energy they had directed toward the war effort.

One more battle remained very visible for years after V-E Day: rationing. Both Britain and the United States had instituted strict rationing programs for food, clothing, and more. In Britain, this rationing had to continue after the end of the war partly because supply lines were still being repaired, partly because the country still had large armed forces to feed, and partly because all of the recovering countries now needed more food but didn't have the agricultural resources to produce what they needed. Many of the countries occupied by the Nazis were close to starvation; for example, the Netherlands experienced famine during 1944 and 1945, and Britain had a responsibility to provide food for people there and in other newly liberated countries. Rationing ended in the United States in 1947, but it continued in Britain until 1954.

What Little-Known Surprise Took Place in Britain on V-E Day?

As you'd expect, crowds gathered outside Buckingham Palace; jubilant Britons wanted to see their Royal Family on this triumphant day. They weren't disappointed; King George VI and the rest of the family appeared on the balcony. However, at one point, the crowd was closer to the royals than they realized. The King and Queen allowed then-Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to anonymously slip into the crowd. Princess Elizabeth, who had spent the latter years of the war as a volunteer mechanic and driver, later said she and her sister chanted right along with the crowd, making it one of her more memorable days.

Answer: Coca-Cola was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886. Dr. John Stith Pemberton, a local pharmacist, carried a jug of Coca-Cola syrup to Jacobs' Pharmacy in downtown Atlanta, where it was mixed with carbonated water and sold it for five cents a glass. In the first year, Pemberton sold just 9 glasses of Coca-Cola a day. Coca-Cola has grown to the world's most ubiquitous brand, with more than 1.9 billion beverage servings sold each day. The World of Coca-Cola Coke Museum is located in downtown Atlanta showcasing the history of The Coca-Cola Company.

Answer: After the death of Israel's first president, Chaim Weizmann, in November 1952, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion offered Albert Einstein the position of President of Israel. The 73-year-old wasted little time in declining the honor. “All my life I have dealt with objective matters,” Einstein wrote in a letter to the Israeli ambassador, “hence I lack both the natural aptitude and the experience to deal properly with people and to exercise official function.” He wrote that he was "deeply moved", and "at once saddened and ashamed" that he could not accept the position.

What Did They Almost Name The Show?

The Honeymooners made its debut on October 5, 1951, as a six-minute sketch on the variety show Cavalcade of Stars, which was hosted by Jackie Gleason. Original suggestions for the sketch's title were "The Lovers," "The Couple Next Door," and aptly, "The Beast." It was finally decided to call the bit "The Honeymooners."  The original "Honeymooners" was much different from the show we all know and love. The first-ever "Honeymooners" was just Jackie as Ralph and his wife Alice.  In 1955, The Honeymooners was eventually spun off into its own program, starring Jackie Gleason as Ralph, Art Carney as Norton, Audrey Meadows as Alice, and Joyce Randolph as Trixie.

What Happened to the Original Alice?

When The Honeymooners first aired, Alice Kramden was played by Pert Kelton, an experienced vaudeville actress. However, the House Un-American Activities Committee was actively searching out Hollywood names with Communist ties at that time, and Kelton's husband ended up in their cross-hairs. Even though Kelton herself wasn't involved, her association with her husband landed her on the infamous Hollywood blacklist, meaning she had to leave the show. At the same time, she started developing heart problems, so the public excuse for her leaving the show focused on her heart health. Kelton did eventually return to acting, and in fact, in the late 1960s, she returned to The Honeymooners as Alice's mother.

Why Did the Set and Costumes Look So Drab?

Despite the tendency of black and white film to make anything look drab, many shows managed to create nice, clean environments with plenty of light for their characters. The Honeymooners went in the opposite direction, though, and Gleason purposefully made the apartment and other set pieces shabby. This was because he wanted to model the set on the tenement in which he grew up. The drabness also mirrored the frugality of the Kramdens, who did not buy things on credit, unlike other neighbors on the show.

Another factor in how the show looked was the fact that Gleason really didn't like doing a lot of takes. As a result, a lot of mistakes, including more than a few set mishaps, landed in the broadcast episodes. That no doubt contributed to the inexpensive look.

Just for Fun, Do You Know What Audrey Meadows' First Language Was?

Audrey Meadows played Alice Kramden for the majority of the show's run, and she was always able to out-talk and outwit the blustering Ralph. But her language ability extended beyond English; in fact, her first language, by all accounts, is listed as Chinese. Meadows' parents were missionaries who had been living in China. Many sources claim Meadows herself was born in China, but at the time of her death, her family said she had been born in New York. However, after her birth, her family returned to China, where they remained until Meadows was about five years old. When they returned to the U.S., apparently little Audrey spoke only Chinese.

The label on a bottle of Sriracha sauce features a picture of which animal?

Answer: Huy Fong's Sriracha sauce is based on David Tran's recipe for the Sriracha chili sauce, a dipping sauce which originated from Thailand. Created in 1980 by Vietnamese-American founder David Tran, it is a brand of Sriracha sauce often also known as "rooster sauce" because of the rooster prominently featured on its label. David Tran was born in 1945, the Year of the Rooster in the Chinese zodiac. The green cap and rooster logo are trademarked, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office considers the name "sriracha" to be a generic term.
