He was born in Kleinberg, Lower Silesia, which is now a part of Poland. At the beginning of World War I, he served in the German cavalry in France, Russia, and Belgium. However, trench warfare made the cavalry ineffective, so he transferred to the Imperial German Army Air Service in mid-1915. In the fall, he entered the pilot training program. Near the end of 1916, he joined with a fighter squadron and shot down his first plane in September and had downed 15 planes by year’s end. Von Richthofen was awarded the Blue Max in January 1917 for a confirmed number of 16 kills, an honor conferred upon military and civilians for extraordinary achievement. By the time his own plane was shot down, he was credited with 80 “kills” and won the reputation as the number-one flying ace in the world. This did not include the number of kills for which he did not receive credit because the planes had landed behind enemy lines and confirmation was not possible. (ps:that's interesting because my Mom was also born in that part of Germany, that's now a part of Poland!) 20 hours ago, phkrause said: What Kind of Plane did the Red Baron Fly? For most of the war, von Richthofen did not fly his signature Fokker Dr.I. Most of the time during the war, he flew some version of the Albatross or the Halberstadt D.II. The plane he was shot down in was a Fokker Dr.I, which he piloted during the early part of 1918. While flying the triwing Fokker, which he was a staunch advocate of, von Richthofen had shot down his last 19 planes. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was Richthofen’s Plane Painted Red? Von Richthofen, knowing that his status was growing as a fighter pilot, began painting his airplane’s wings a brilliant red in 1917, supposedly in tribute to his earlier cavalry regiment but eventually he began painting the entire plane. In that same year, he already surpassed all flying ace records by both sides during the war. Because of the bright red added to his plane, which made him distinguishable from other pilots, people started calling him names such as “the Red Devil” and the Red Knight.” Eventually, the name “the Red Baron” stuck. 20 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Shot Down the Red Baron? Von Richthofen’s plane was shot down close to the Somme River in France while he was chasing after a young Canadian flyer named Wilfred May, nicknamed “Wop.” The dogfight between the two was at a low level, and von Richthofen was shot in the torso with a weapon fired either by one of the Canadians or one of the Australian machine gunners who were in the trenches on the ground. However, the angle of the wound suggested that the fatal fire came from someone on the ground. Force landing his plane, he died of his injuries shortly afterward. The plane was largely intact, but souvenir hunters pulled off many pieces. Interestingly enough, von Richthofen was discovered to be wearing pajamas underneath his flight suit. The Bundys The Munsters The Addams Family The Sopranos I gotta believe its the Munsters! Answer: The Munsters is a 1960s television sitcom depicting the home life of a family of monsters. It starred Fred Gwynne as Herman Munster and Yvonne De Carlo as his wife, Lily Munster. The Munsters live at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in the city of Mockingbird Heights, a fictional suburb in California. The running gag of the series is that the family, while decidedly odd, consider themselves fairly typical working-class people of the era. Though The Munsters lasted only 2 seasons from 1964-1966, it remains a popular show and an icon of American television. Al Gore Jimmy Carter Leonardo DiCaprio Gaylord Nelson Could it possibly be the same guy who thinks he's the founder of the internet?? Answer: Happy Earth Day! Earth Day is celebrated on April 22, where events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Senator Gaylord Nelson is the founder of Earth Day. Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million people nationwide attended the inaugural event. Senator Nelson promoted Earth Day, calling upon students to fight for environmental causes and oppose environmental degradation. Nelson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom award in recognition of his work. Members phkrause Posted April 23, 2017 Author Members Posted April 23, 2017 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Who Is Credited With the Idea for Earth Day? Earth Day is credited as having been conceived by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, following a Santa Barbara, California, oil spill that wreaked havoc with the local environment in 1969. It was caused by a blowout on a drilling platform owned by Unocal Corp., which spewed out over three million gallons of oil into the water and onto 30 miles of beaches, causing environmental damage and a large loss of seabirds and other beach wildlife. During protests against the war in the late 60s, Nelson believed that he could raise the public’s consciousness about the problems with water and air pollution. Congressman Pete McCloskey was his co-chair. Harvard’s Denis Hayes served as coordinator, raising a staff nationwide of 85 persons to promote the events. The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: Why Was This Date Chosen as Earth Day? While it has been suggested that the date to celebrate Earth Day coincided with the ability to reach university students on that day, it was probably chosen because of its connection with the first Arbor Day. The first Arbor Day was devised by J. Sterling Morgan, editor and writer for a Nebraska newspaper, who thought it was a good idea to plant trees on the prairie. In 1872, he suggested April 10 as a day to set aside and plant trees and suggested offering prizes for the organizations and communities that planted the largest number. In 1882, Arbor Day was declared a holiday, and the date chosen for it was the birthday of Morgan on April 22. On Earth Day, planting trees is still a common way to honor the environment. 18 hours ago, phkrause said: What Government Agency Was Established Because of Earth Day? On Earth Day in 1970, demonstrations by about 20 million people took place across the country in the streets, colleges, parks and elsewhere, in support of a healthy environment that would be sustainable. Politically popular with both major political parties and people from all walks of life, it resulted in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, passage of the Endangered Species Acts, the Clean Air Act and the Federal Water Pollution Control Act of 1972. 19 hours ago, phkrause said: What Continent is Featured Most Prominently on the Earth Day Flag? Though there is no “official” flag for Earth Day, the one creatively known as the Earth Day Flag is probably the most popular. It features a photo of the Earth as seen from space — the famous Blue Marble shot. The point-of-view they chose for the flag almost entirely features the continent of Africa. This only makes sense, as Africa is the continent where our species originated, and since Earth Day is all about preserving our planet so that life may continue, it’s only fitting that its flag pay tribute to the land where that life began. I was thinking the redwood myself, have never heard of the honey fungus before. Answer: The blue whale is big, but nowhere near as huge as a sprawling fungus in eastern Oregon. More precisely, a specific honey fungus in Oregon covers 2,384 acres of soil in Oregon's Blue Mountains and is known to be the largest living organism on Earth. This humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles of turf. Based on its current growth rate, the fungus is estimated to be 2,400 years old but could be as ancient as 8,650 years, which would earn it a place among the oldest living organisms as well. Members phkrause Posted April 24, 2017 Author Members Posted April 24, 2017 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Motivated Coca-Cola to Change the Coke Formula? In the 15 years leading up to the introduction of New Coke in 1985, the Coca-Cola Company had seen its lead in the all-important cola-drinks market slipping steadily. In contrast, its primary rival, Pepsi-Cola, had been gaining ground on Coke as more and more cola-lovers opted for the sweeter-tasting beverage. Although Coke was holding onto a thin market lead, thanks to its edge in the fast-food and vending-machine segments, Pepsi was outselling Coke in supermarkets. To Coca-Cola executives, it seemed that it was only a matter of time before Pepsi toppled Coke as the king of colas. Roberto Goizueta, who had become Coca-Cola Company's chairman and chief executive officer in August 1980, decided a new, sweeter formula for Coke might better position the company's flagship soft drink to compete with Pepsi. That formula change, according to Coca-Cola's company website, spawned ¨consumer angst the likes of which no business has ever seen.¨ 21 hours ago, phkrause said: How Did New Coke Fare in Blind Taste Tests? As part of the market research done in advance of the change in Coke's formula, nearly 200,000 blind taste tests were conducted. These taste tests pitted Pepsi, Coke's new formula, and classic Coke against one another. In more than half of the tests conducted, participants favored the new Coke over both Pepsi and the original Coke formula. Looking back on the taste tests and the marketing decision that they drove, Coca-Cola's website acknowledges that the tests had one fatal flaw. ¨What these tests didn't show, of course, was the bond consumers felt with their Coca-Cola - something they didn't want anyone, including the Coca-Cola Company, tampering with.¨ 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Initial Market Reaction to New Coke? In the early days after New Coke's introduction, which was rolled out regionally beginning in big cities like New York and Washington, D.C., Coke sales increased and were up as much as 8 percent over the previous year in some key markets. However, the new beverage was greeted less than enthusiastically in the Southeast, the birthplace of Coke and one of its biggest regional markets. However, it was not long before the tide turned, perhaps driven by the realization that the Coke many consumers had loved for decades was gone for good. Lovers of the original Coke flooded Coca-Cola's consumer hotlines with calls complaining about the change. By two months after New Coke's roll-out, the company was getting 1,500 angry phone calls daily on its consumer hotline, compared with 400 a day before the formula change. 21 hours ago, phkrause said: What Was the Eventual Fate of New Coke? Less than three months after the introduction of New Coke, the Coca-Cola Company bowed to consumer pressure and announced on July 11, 1985, that the original Coke would return to the market, rebranded as Classic Coke. However, the original formula did not replace New Coke, which continued to be sold under the name Coca-Cola until 1992 when it was officially renamed Coke II. In 2002, the company discontinued production of Coke II altogether. Quote phkrause When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; But when a wicked man rules, the people groan. Heroin Marijuana Cocaine Tobacco Cocaine Answer: When launched, Coca-Cola's two key ingredients were cocaine and caffeine. The cocaine was derived from the coca leaf and the caffeine from kola nut, leading to the name Coca-Cola (the "K" in Kola was replaced with a "C" for marketing purposes). Coca-Cola once contained an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass. (For comparison, a typical dose or "line" of cocaine is 50–75 mg.) In 1903, it was removed. Coca-Cola now uses a cocaine-free coca leaf extract however the exact formula remains a trade secret. Answer: On this day in 1800, Congress approved a bill establishing the Library of Congress. When British troops invaded Washington in 1814, they burned the Capitol Building and the small congressional library was lost in the fire. Retired President Thomas Jefferson offered his personal library as a replacement. Jefferson’s library at the time was considered to be one of the finest in the United States. Congress accepted Jefferson's offer, appropriating $23,950 for his 6,487 books, and the foundation was laid for a great national library.
