What Famous Person Worked as James Brown’s Road Manager?

The Rev. Al Sharpton became acquainted with Brown in 1973 when Sharpton was only 18 years old. In 1981, Sharpton talked Brown into recording a gospel song, so they went to Greenville, South Carolina, to a recording studio and made “God Has Smiled on Me.” It was performed by James Brown and his backup group, the Gospel Energies, and introduced Al Sharpton, something that is printed on the single’s label. While Brown sings during the song, Rev. Sharpton preaches short sermonettes during the vocal interludes.

What is the only state whose capital city begins with the letter "F"?

I'm thinking SD??

Answer: Frankfort is the capital city of Kentucky. With a population of 25,527 at the 2010 census, it is the fifth-smallest state capital in the United States. The town of Frankfort likely received its name from an event that took place in the 1780s. American Indians attacked a group of early European-American pioneers from Bryan Station, who were making salt at a ford in the Kentucky River. Pioneer Stephen Frank was killed, and the settlers thereafter called the crossing "Frank's Ford." This name was later elided to Frankfort.

Kentucky!!!!! Who would've thought!! or like my grandson would say "Seriously!" LOL Oh well you win some and you lose some!! or ss dgrimm says "hahahahohohohehehe"

Kent State would be my guess

Answer: The Kent State shootings were the shootings of unarmed college students protesting the Vietnam War at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, by members of the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. Twenty-nine guardsmen fired approximately 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others. Hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the U.S. due to a student strike of 4 million students. A grand jury indicted 8 of the guardsmen, but the charges were dismissed for lack of evidence.

What Event Precipitated the Student Protests?

Only a few days before the incident at Kent State, U.S. President Richard Nixon went on national television to announce that he had authorized the invasion of Cambodia by U.S. forces. He went on to say that this expansion of the Vietnam War effort would necessitate the drafting of 150,000 more young men into the U.S. Army. Nixon's decision to broaden an already unpopular war caused unrest among students on college campuses across the nation. Protests on the Kent State campus began on Friday, May 1, the day after Nixon's TV announcement. Protests continued the following day, May 2, and increased in intensity as the day wore on. In response to growing unrest at Kent State, Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes at 5 p.m. called in the National Guard. As a result, roughly 900 National Guardsmen arrived on campus at about 10 p.m., by which time protests were going strong. On top of that, someone -- never identified or arrested -- set fire to the ROTC building on campus.

What Happened on the Day of the Shootings?

Antiwar protesters among the Kent State students made up a relatively small portion -- 10 percent or less -- of the university's overall enrollment. On May 4, despite university attempts to carry out the governor's mandate by banning a planned protest at noon, hundreds of students -- some of whom were probably unaware of the ban -- began gathering at the Commons in preparation for the rally. Also crisscrossing the area of the planned protest were other students on their way to classes or other activities. When those gathering for the protest ignored orders to disperse, a band of 77 National Guardsmen advanced on the protesters, who retreated from the Commons area. While some of the protesters eventually dispersed, some continued to resist and a few hurled rocks and other objects at the guardsmen. At 12:24 p.m., one of the guardsmen opened fired at the students. Later investigations concluded that 29 of the 77 guardsmen fired their weapons in a 13-second period. Four students were killed, and nine were wounded.

What Happened to the Girl in the Photo?

A photograph came to symbolize the Kent State Shooting: A girl kneeling by a dead student, screaming, with her arms held open. The girl, Mary Ann Vecchio, is often treated as if she were a Kent State student, but she was really a 14-year-old runaway from Florida who attended the protest at the invitation of students who were providing her with shelter.

Not only did Vecchio witness the shootings, but she was also targeted afterward by nearly everyone. She was accused of being a Communist plant and of being the person who actually pulled the trigger to kill the students. When her father recognized her in the picture, she was brought back to Florida only to end up in a series of scrapes with the law. However, she later settled down to lead a quiet life. She has tried to avoid the event and its anniversaries, and has tried not to talk about it, except as she's been quoted as saying, that the event "really destroyed [her] life."

What Was the National Reaction to the Shootings?

Outrage over the Kent State shootings fueled hundreds of antiwar protests by students at colleges and universities across the United States. Student strikes were staged at 450 campuses nationwide. However, away from college campuses, public opinion placed the blame for the violent incident primarily on the students. In a Gallup Poll taken shortly after the incident, 58 percent of respondents blamed the students, 11 percent blamed the National Guard, and 31 percent expressed no opinion. Although eight of the guardsmen accused of firing on the students were indicted, a U.S. District Court judge dismissed the charges on the grounds that the prosecution's case was too weak to warrant a trial.

Answer: Southwest Airlines is the world's largest low-cost carrier, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. In 1966 Southwest Airlines was founded by Rollin King and Herbert Kelleher; in 1967 it was incorporated as Air Southwest Company. It was not until 1971 that the airline began scheduled flights, from Dallas Love Field. The same year the organization adopted the name Southwest Airlines. The expansion of flights started in 1975, to cities throughout Texas, and in 1978 Southwest began flying to neighboring states. Service to the East and the Southeast started in the 1990s.

What Historic Event Does Cinco de Mayo Celebrate?

Contrary to popular American belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16, the day in 1810 when the 11-year Mexican War of Independence began. Rather, Cinco de Mayo celebrates an event in Mexican history that occurred more than 50 years after Mexicans declared their independence from Spain. And it all boiled down to a conflict over an unpaid debt.

Its economy shattered by the Mexican-American War, Mexico was hard put to pay its debts to European countries that had lent it money in the past. When Mexican President Benito Juarez suspended repayment on these debts, an invasion force made up of troops from three countries -- France, Spain, and Britain -- landed at Veracruz determined to collect what was owed them. While Spanish and British troops later withdrew after a compromise repayment agreement was reached, French troops pushed on toward Mexico City.

On May 5, 1862, French General Charles de Lorencez led 7,000 French troops into battle against a ragtag Mexican force of 4,000 led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza near the city of Puebla. Despite their superior numbers and training, the French troops were no match for their Mexican opponents, who excelled at guerrilla warfare. Cinco de Mayo marks the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla.

Did the Battle of Puebla Put an End to the French Threat?

The embarrassing French loss at the Battle of Puebla redoubled the determination of French Emperor Napoleon III to make the Mexicans pay, in more ways than one. He sent thousands more French troops to Mexico and eventually succeeded in seizing power in Mexico City, where Austrian-born Maximilian of Habsburg was installed in 1864 as emperor of what Napoleon III hoped would be a French client state. Although Maximilian had control over much of Mexico from the country's capital, Liberal forces led by Benito Juarez maintained power in northwestern Mexico and also along parts of the country's Pacific Coast.

Over the next couple of years, Liberal forces were victorious over Maximilian's army in numerous battles, and it soon became clear they would eventually take the capital. France gradually withdrew its support of Maximilian, who was arrested, tried, and executed when Mexican forces led by Juarez regained power in 1867.

How Was the French Intervention Viewed in Washington, D.C.?

The French intervention in Mexico occurred at the same time as the U.S. Federal government and its troops were engaged in a bloody Civil War with the forces of the Confederacy, Southern states that sought to secede from the Union. Lincoln and his cabinet members worried that France, Britain, or another European power might come to the aid of the South, which could easily have tipped the balance of power in favor of the Confederacy. To help prevent that, U.S. Secretary of State William Henry Seward took great pains to maintain harmonious relations with France, thus discouraging France -- or its client-state Mexico -- from establishing diplomatic ties with the Confederacy.

Looking for the biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world? Look no further than Fiesta Broadway in Los Angeles, where hundreds of thousands of people come out for food, music and crafts in a celebration of Hispanic heritage. But you know where Cinco de Mayo isn't a huge deal? Mexico.  While Mexican students are taught in school about the Battle of Puebla and its role in Mexican history, Cinco de Mayo is actually an official holiday in only one of Mexico's 31 states -- Puebla, which was the site of the battle. Across the border in the United States, however, the holiday has come to be a celebration of Mexican ethnic identity and, as such, a day of pride for Mexican Americans, as well as all Americans who love margaritas, tequila, burritos, tacos, and guacamole.

Answer: On June 28, 1997, in one of the most controversial events in modern sports, Mike Tyson was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield on both ears. The first time he bit him the match was temporarily stopped. Referee Mills Lane deducted two points from Tyson and the fight resumed. However, after the match resumed, Tyson did it again: this time Tyson was disqualified and Holyfield won the match. One bite was severe enough to remove a piece of Holyfield's right ear, which was found on the ring floor after the fight.

Answer: On May 6, 1937, the German airship Hindenburg burst into flames while attempting to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. The disaster killed 35 people on the airship, and one member of the ground crew, but miraculously 62 of the 97 passengers and crew survived. The disaster was caused by an electrostatic discharge (i.e., a spark) that ignited leaking hydrogen. The incident shattered public confidence in the giant, passenger-carrying rigid airship and marked the abrupt end of the airship era.

How Big was the Hindenburg?

The airship measured roughly the length of 2 ? football fields: 804 feet from stern to bow. Just over 4 of today’s popular Goodyear blimps could fit inside the Hindenburg nose-to-tail. It was the largest airship ever constructed and included 72 beds, a dining room, lounge with a specialty-made light-weight aluminum piano, two promenades with large windows, a reading room and - believe it or not - a smoker’s room.

That’s right: an airship carrying 7 million cubic feet of hydrogen gas - one of the five most explosive elements on Earth - had a room for people to light up cigarettes and cigars. Seems crazy, but surprisingly, smoking had nothing to do with the Hindenburg’s crash. The airship’s devastating fate stood outside the control of the passengers, crew, or ground control.

13 hours ago, phkrause said:

What Caused the Hindenburg to Crash?

In the wake of the tragedy, both Germany and America launched full-scale investigations into the cause of the disaster. Theories ranged far and wide, from mechanical failure to political sabotage (the Hindenburg was a Nazi airship, after all), but ultimately, both countries landed on the same conclusion. The massive, 242-ton behemoth fell victim to a single spark.

The atmosphere around the Lakehurst airfield was electrically charged from earlier storms in the area. A transfer of static electricity met a leak in the hydrogen tank which caused an immediate ignition beginning at the tail of the ship and quickly racing toward the nose where a massive explosion occurred. It took no more than 32 seconds for the entire ship to be engulfed in flames.

13 hours ago, phkrause said:

How Many People Survived?

When you watch the footage of the Hindenburg disaster or recall Herbert Morrison’s infamous “Oh, the humanity!” commentary, it seems impossible that any of the 97 passengers and crew aboard could have survived.

The truth, however, is that most people did survive. While 35 people aboard the airship and one member of the ground crew did lose their life on May 6, 1937, the majority of the Hindenburg’s human cargo lived. Though many suffered severe burns and injuries, 62 people made it out alive.

13 hours ago, phkrause said:

Did Another Zeppelin Ever Fly Again?

Though there had been several airship disasters prior to the Hindenburg - including U.S. Navy-operated USS Akron, which crashed at sea and killed 73 people - but the tragedy over Lakehurst was the last straw for the public and marked the end of an era for airship travel.

Whether it was because of the shocking live footage or the arrival of air travel by plane, the Hindenburg was the last Zeppelin.
