What Was Houdini's Real Name?

Erik Weisz was born in Budapest. One of seven children, he emigrated to America in 1878 on the USS Fresia, and was renamed Ehrich Weiss. His family promptly moved to Appleton, WI. In 1887, after his father lost his job as a rabbi, the family relocated to New York City.

It was perfect for Ehrich; he'd started working as an entertainer at nine, as a trapeze artist who called himself "The Prince of the Air." In 1890, after apprenticing under Joseph Rinn, he started working as a professional magician, taking the name "Harry Houdini" from the magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. Why "Houdini?" Ehrich, unfamiliar with French, though the 'I' meant "like," so his name was intended to be "like Houdin."

What Was Houdini's First Escape?

The winning act Houdini stumbled on was the "handcuffs" act. He would go to the local police station, slap on their handcuffs, and just as easily slip out of them. Martin Beck, a theatrical manager, saw Houdini at work, and told him if he'd focus on escape tricks, he'd book Houdini on the lucrative Orpheum circuit.

More success followed. Part of it was Houdini was a master of theatrics and suspense; one stunt in Moscow, where he had to escape from a Siberian transport van, would supposedly have meant he'd have to go all the way to Siberia where the only key was kept. He quickly stepped up his tricks as handcuff escapes caught on, escaping from ropes, chains, jails, straitjackets, mail bags, riveted boilers, and, most famously, a milk can filled with water. He often arranged these escapes with local merchants as an early form of marketing.

One famous trick, where he was nailed into a crate covered in manacles and lowered into the water with no hope of escaping, ended not only with Houdini free of the box, but all the manacles neatly left inside.

Houdini was more than just an escape artist, however. One of his most famous stunts had him vanish an elephant at the New York Hippodrome. Tragedy, however, was looming.

How Did Hondini Die?

Houdini also had a career debunking mediums, who he saw as shoddy magicians exploiting grief. Along the way, he picked up a series of other tricks and stunts, including the one that would end his life; Houdini claimed he could take any punch to the stomach.

It was a simple trick: You tightened the abdominal muscles and they absorbed the blow, with the pain a simple thing to ignore for a man who packed himself into milk crates. But Houdini, resting from a broken ankle, was punched suddenly and repeatedly by a college student.

Houdini continued to Detroit after the incident where he performed for the very last time Oct. 24, 1926, at the Garrick Theater. Doctors diagnosed him with appendicitis but his condition quickly deteriorated and the magician was taken to Grace Hospital in downtown Detroit.  Houdini remained in the hospital for a week where he had two operations to repair his ruptured appendix. But he had developed peritonitis, an infection of the abdominal cavity caused by a ruptured appendix. Houdini died in room 401 of Grace Hospital on Halloween 1926.

In which decade was the slinky invented?

Answer: In 1943, the Slinkey was inadvertently invented when Richard James, a Naval Engineer, noticed a spring coil drop on the ground at work. He was intrigued by the fact that this torsion spring bounced around the way that it did. He realized that this cool spring would actually make a great toy! And that is how the simple, yet amazingly successful Slinky idea was born! In 1946, Slinky was introduced at the American Toy Fair. In its 70 years on the market, it has sold more than 300 million units. Slinky was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2000.

What is the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere?

Answer: The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. Most of the mass (about 75-80%) of the atmosphere is in the troposphere. Most types of clouds are found in the troposphere, and almost all weather occurs within this layer. The bottom of the troposphere is at Earth's surface. The troposphere extends upward to about 6.2 miles or about 33,000 feet above sea level. The layer immediately above the troposphere is called the stratosphere. The boundary between the troposphere and the stratosphere is called the "tropopause".

What Was the Purpose of the King's March from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in March of 1965?

Martin Luther King Jr. led the SCLC and protesters from Selma, Alabama to the Alabama State Capital in Montgomery, but it wasn't an easy march. The first time that the protesters tried to make the journey was a local event under the leadership of an elderly woman named Amelia Boynton. At the county line, the protesters were badly beaten, including Boynton, with a photograph of her lying unconscious published by media all over the world.

This led to major efforts by the SCLC and King, with the purpose of the march to allow African-Americans to register to vote. Finally, the trip was undertaken with the protection of law enforcement officials assigned federally, since it was state troopers and posseman who were attempting to prevent the march.

What Was Martin Luther King's Birth Name and Why Was it changed?

King was actually born Michael King Jr. rather than Martin Luther King Jr., but his father heard a religious leader in Germany named Martin Luther and became so inspired that he decided to change both his name and his son's name to Martin Luther King.

What Significant Academic Assignment did Martin Luther King Cheat on in College?

King's dissertation is still in the Boston University Library, but it has a note attached that says it contains significant passages from other works. Even though a significant amount of Martin Luther King Jr.'s dissertation was plagiarized, the committee found that it was still an academic contribution that was worthy enough for King to keep his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology.

After King's assassination, he was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Memphis. He died at 7:05 PM. During the autopsy, the coroner found that Martin Luther King Jr. had been under so much stress during the 13 years of the Civil Rights Movement that had had a heart that was almost twice his actual age of 39.

Dirty Harry if I remember correctly

Answer: "Go ahead, make my day" is a catchphrase written by Charles B. Pierce and spoken by the character Harry Callahan from the 1983 film Sudden Impact. In 2005, it was chosen as No. 6 on the American Film Institute list, AFI's 100 Years... 100 Movie Quotes. The actual origins of the phrase came from Pierce's father Mack, who used to tell him as a child, "Just let me come home one more day, without you mowing that lawn, son just go ahead.....make my day".

Oh well!!

Answer: Otis is the oldest and largest manufacturer of elevators in the world. Founded more than 160 years ago by the inventor of the safety elevator, Otis has more than 1.9 million elevators in operation worldwide. The Otis Elevator Company, claims that its products carry the equivalent of the world’s population every five days. The company pioneered the development of the "safety elevator", invented by Elisha Otis in 1852, which used a special mechanism to lock the elevator car in place should the hoisting ropes fail.

Whose Contraction of the Disease Proved Instrumental in the Development of the Polio Vaccine?

In 1921, he wasn't President, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt was still a prominent American rising through the political system. While on vacation, he contracted polio, leaving his legs paralyzed. It was this tragic development that in part led to the vaccine's creation. FDR launched the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (which became the March of Dimes Foundation). 80 million Americans contributed to the foundation and it raised tens of millions of dollars to fight the disease, serving as the primary source of funding for Salk's work.

In 1952, it was time for human trials of Salk's vaccine. Among those first test subjects were Salk's own wife and children. All of whom were pleased to report an increase in the antibodies we use to fight polio. Which is good, because if that went wrong, it could have led to some really awkward tension at the dinner table.

Who Holds the Patent for the Polio Vaccine?

Salk's polio vaccine soon took off and was used by millions across the country. It virtually ended a devastating affliction and forever changed America. So it made Salk ridiculously rich, right? Well, not exactly. Salk never actually patented the vaccine, a decision which Forbes estimates cost him roughly $7 billion. Salk decided that the people owned the patent, not him, in part due to the fact that it was their millions through the March of Dimes that paid for its development. "There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?" Salk asked.

What is the Salk Institute for Biological Studies?

Apparently not content with solving polio, Salk kept on going. He founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, bringing in a slate of Nobel Prize winners to work there. Salk once said, "I couldn't possibly have become a member of this institute if I hadn't founded it myself." According to their website, "Salk scientists make groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of cancer, aging, Alzheimer's, diabetes and infectious diseases by studying neuroscience, genetics, cell and plant biology, and related disciplines." If all that's true, then they're doing a great job with a nearly impossible task: Following in Jonas Salk's footsteps.

Answer: Before World War I, the United States wanted to buy the islands due to fear that if Denmark were conquered by Germany, Germany would attempt to take over Denmark's overseas dependencies. The U.S. bought the islands from Denmark for $25 million. The U.S. chose the name "Virgin Islands" when it took formal possession of the Danish West Indies on March 31, 1917. The island chain consists of St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John, and about 50 other small islands, most of which are uninhabited.
